Work Text:
You did this to her you did this to her you don’t get to lose it.
Hazel stepped out into the hallway and took a long, deep breath, then went back into the delivery room, where Natalie was on the bed, gasping for air. Her fault.
They made love the night Mari died after the feast. There was just something in the air. They ran out of Ben’s condoms ages ago and normally they were smarter than that but this night there was something crazed between them. And Hazel wasn’t sure what it was but she just felt so sad which she’d grown numb to for so long. Natalie must have felt it too, which is why they found comfort in each other’s bodies, just like they had the night Javi died.
It was so so stupid.
But it was okay.
They were rescued days later and now nine months later they were in the hospital. It wasn’t like what happened with Shauna. They had real nurses, drugs, medicine.
After what seemed like eternity but was actually twenty-six hours, new blood came into the world with a cry as strong as her parents.
They both held their daughter once. Hazel got to take a picture of Natalie with their daughter in her arms for safekeeping.
But soon, she was taken away by CPS. The adoption was voluntary of course. They were not fit to be parents. They couldn’t bring themselves to meet her new family or even learn their names.
Natalie didn’t want to learn it, like Shauna she didn’t want the added grief, but Hazel would treasure the name the adoptive parents chose for their baby always;
Lisa.
