Chapter Text
It’s cold in the park where I stand, waiting for my best friend Robin. She’s been ignoring me more and more over the past two weeks, and she’s stopped talking to me when we’re around other people. I’ve been feeling really left out actually, but of course, she denies all of it. Now, I’m finally going to get some answers. Now, I’m going to confront her. I’ve been standing here for maybe fifteen minutes now, and I’m starting to wonder if she’s even going to show up. I look around the park, It’s dark and quite foggy, I can’t see much, but the streetlights are lighting the path in front of me. I hear footsteps behind me, and when I turn around, I see her—Robin. With her long red hair, the freckles covering her face, her blue eyes, the eyelids she’s put brown eyeshadow on. But what stands out the most to me is that she’s wearing a long gray scarf she hasn’t had on before. When did she buy that?
Suddenly, she’s standing right in front of me.
I don’t really know what to say, so we just look at each other for a while, before I finally just say:
“Hi.”
“Hi.”
She looks away from me, then just stares down at the ground before looking up at me again.
“What are we doing here, really?”
She says, looking at me with big, guilty eyes. I know she understands why we’re here, but I don’t really know how to confront her when she’s looking at me with those big eyes of hers. She looks almost like a puppy that’s been caught peeing on the rug in the living room. The wind is cold on my bare arms, and I realize I should’ve worn a jacket for this, but there’s nothing I can do about it now.
“Why have you been ignoring me for almost two weeks? That’s why we’re here.”
I say, looking her straight in the eye. I’ve decided it’s better to just get to the point.
“What? I haven’t—”
I don’t let her finish, because I know what she’s going to say.
“Don’t bother denying it, we both know it’s true.”
I see her body language change, and she tenses up, before it looks like she gives up trying to pretend, takes a deep breath, and opens her mouth to talk.
“I don’t know why... I just...”
It looks like she’s trying to come up with an excuse, but I can see it’s not going very well. She just ends up looking down at the ground. But I personally just think this whole thing is stupid. She must have a reason, did I do something wrong?
“I just don’t get it, did I do something wrong?”
I ask, and then she looks right up at me, with an almost dumbfounded look on her face.
“what!?, no It’s not that.. I promise!”
She retorts quickly, and I think she sounds genuine, but it also makes me wonder, what is it then? What could make her ignore me for almost two whole weeks?
“What is it then? Why?”
She looks almost sad when she looks at me, as if there’s something she doesn’t want to tell me. I feel frustrated, Why can’t she just tell me what’s wrong? Then we can put this behind us and go back to being best friends, talking in every break, hanging out on the weekends, texting every day, just like we used to only two weeks ago.
I’m about to say something about not wanting to argue anymore when something happens that I can’t quite process in the moment. Suddenly, her lips are on mine. I feel my face heat up, my heart is beating so fast it feels like I’m having a heart attack, but at the same time, it feels like it’s stopped completely. I close my eyes and kiss her back gently. But just as quickly as it happened, she pulls away. When I open my eyes again, it almost looks like she’s about to have a panic attack.
“Oh.."
Is the only sound I manage to make before she runs away from me, into the darkness. I run after her and call out.
“Robin!”
