Chapter Text
Rolling over in bed, Lucy checks the time, and can't stop the smile the shows when she turns to look at Kate next to her equally as happy “Didn't we say we were going to have an early night” breathes out Lucy, lifting her arm to wipe the sweat she feels falling near her left eyebrow.
Laying on side, unable to take her eyes of Lucy, Kate reaches out and lightly traces a pattern on Lucy’s stomach, that’s only covered by a thin sheet. “Well, I blame my wife, she is very distracting” smirks the blond, loving the way lucy shivers under her touch, even after all this time together.
“Your wife huh?” teases Lucy, feeling her breathing come back to normal, which gives her the chance to lift herself up and lean over to press a soft kiss to her wife’s lips, before laying back down.
“Yeah, my wife, you might know her, she unbelievably Hot, very smart and funny, “smirks Kate as she moves to cover her wife’s body with hers “Has the most perfect laugh, that I could listen to for days” moving to put her attention on Lucy’s neck, she can't help put press light kisses as she continues to name all the things she loves about lucy. “Smile and eyes, that make you feel like you are truly understood and loved”
Needing more from Kate, than the teasing she is receiving right now, Lucy wastes no time in trying to pull herself together so she can focus and brings her lips to Kate. Putting her hand on Kate’s cheek Lucy guides Kate’s to her lips for a deep and loving kiss.
Pulling back “You don’t have to sweet talk me Whistler, I already married you” now grins Lucy as she watches Kate trying to chase her lips.
Pouting at the fact they are no longer kissing Kate props her arms next to Lucy’s head and holds herself up for get a better look at Lucy “Very true, but I like to be reminded that we got married and now I get to call you Mrs Whistler” beams Kate. Which always happens when she calls Lucy by the last name they now share.
Running a finger up and down Kate's bare arm as she gazes at her wife. Lucy can't help but be reminded of their wedding a month ago, which then led them to their honeymoon, that was also unforgettable. “Even after a month of being married” winks Lucy, feeling the same. Calling Kate her wife was a feeling she never experienced but getting used to it would defiantly take its time, which she certainly didn't mind.
“OH, I think it’s going to be a life time before this feeling goes away” Smiles Kate.
Not having any more words at the moment to express her love and excited at a life time with Kate, Lucy put’s one hand to Kate’s cheek and brings her back down for a fiery kiss, ready for another round. And not caring if they have to run on coffee at work tomorrow.
Looking around their apartment, taking in the packed boxes, ready for the new home they move into next week, Lucy smile hasn't faded for months. From getting engaged, to buying their first home together, to getting married and moving to their new home, the couple can’t wait for the next adventure together.
Still unable to believe that she has all she wants and more, Lucy looks at the boxes and stuff that still needs to be pack. Being distracted, she doesn't hear Kate calling her name.
“Luce?” repeated Kate, coming to stand next to Lucy in the kitchen.
“Sorry what?”
“Everything okay?”
“Yeah of course” said Lucy, reaching out for Kate’s hand to hold “I was just thinking how crazy the last 4 months have been for us, who would have known that it would all changed so quick”
“Well, I always knew that I was going to marry you, since we met 4 years ago, but I didn't expect to get engaged and married within 4 months, then move a month after that” chuckles Kate. Old Kate would have never of let that happen without a set plan and a very detailed go by go of each day but since Lucy, more spontaneous days became a part of her life.
“Everything happened so quick but, I wouldn't have it any other way” glows Lucy when Kate looks at her with her smile.
“Neither would I” smiles back Kate leaning down to kiss her wife.
Leaning back, “I have to go to an early meeting, but meet me for lunch?” asks Kate, holding lucy close.
“Of course I look forward to it” replies Lucy. With one final kiss, before watching Kate leaves their apartment, already excited to see her wife for lunch.
Getting to work herself and getting progress on their latest case, Lucy is taken back when she gets to look at her phone and notices Kate is late for lunch. Not seeing any messages that she would normally warn her she going to be late, Lucy pressed on her number and listened as it rang.
Hearing it continue to ring and going to straight to voice mail, Lucy starts to panic knowing it’s unlike Kate to be late or not update her on whatever was going on. Trying the number again and getting the same result, Lucy stands up “Hey, I'm just going to go pick up Kate for lunch, won't be long” tightly smile Lucy. as she tries to hide her concern.
“Have fun with the wife” smiles Jesse “And don't forget to bring back the coffee”
“Always and don't worry I won't forget like last time” salutes Lucy as she grabs her jacket and heads out to pick up Kate from the FBI office.
Heading inside the FBI office and going straight to Kate's office, she worries further when it’s empty. Looking around the office, she is relived when she sees Curtis coming in her direction. “NCIS Agent Whistler, surprised to see you hear after hearing about Kate, hope she didn't convince you to pick up some work for her” grins Curtis knowing what Kate is like.
“Sick? Kate’s not sick, she left for work before me this morning” now really worries Lucy.
“She sent a message this morning saying she wasn't coming in because she was sick” also worried Curtis, when he saw the confusion on Lucy’s face. Reaching into his pocket to show Lucy the text. “She sent this 10 minute after she left, where the hell is she? "Questioned Lucy as she mumbled to herself.
Not giving Curtis's time to talk, Lucy heads to the apartment to hopefully find Kate.
Driving home, lucy goes to call Kate again before Jane’s number shows up, accepting the call, she doesn't give Jane a chance to talk before letting her worry out “Have you heard from Kate, she was supposed to meet me for lunch...” explained Lucy, praying that Kate is at home.
“Lucy, just breath I'm sure Kate is just at home, so don't panic unless there is something to panic about, while you check at home, I will just get Ernie to find Kate's phone just to be on the safe side” softly said Jane, trying to remain calm.
Not convinced but taking a calming breath anyway, Lucy agrees before hanging up and parking outside the apartment. Pressing the elevator button and nervously tapping her foot as the elevator takes its time. The moment the door opens to their level, she sprints out to apartment 1204.
Opening the door and rushing in, “Kate, babe you here?” yells out Lucy, searching for any indication Kate was home. Running around, her heart rate picks up when Kate is nowhere to be seen. Hand through her hair and heart beating fast lucy handshakes when she calls Jane.
Not waiting long for Jane to pick up “I can’t find her Jane, this is not like Kate, she would tell me what’s going on, something is wrong”
“I know it’s not easy but stay calm and come back to the bullpen, it’s okay” calmly said Jane, even though she was freaking out at how unlike Kate this all was.
Back in the bullpen, Jane looked up to hear Ernie rushing in, it had been less than 5 minutes since she called Ernie to track Kate's phone and by his worried expression, she was about to hear the opposite to what she expected. “I tracked Kate’s phone and it’s not moved for hours, outside a warehouse not fair from here” breathes out Ernie, but rushing to put all the information on the big screen for everyone to see.
“What would Kate be doing there? she said told Lucy she had an early meeting” said Jane crossing her arms.
“No idea but we need to get their quick, from what We have learned, she phones in sick without anyone knowing” which was the first red flag “and she not at her apartment” second red flag “and she not answering Lucy “which is the biggest red flag, knowing Kate always answered Lucy.
“I don't know but I don't like it, let’s go” worried Jesse collecting his keys and phone as he stood up and headed to find Kate with Kai and Tennant.
Rushing to the elevator, when it opens, they see a worried Lucy. Not wasting any time and joining Lucy inside, the team update Lucy on everything they knew and what was going on as they head out.
Pulling up to the warehouse, Lucy goes quite as she gets out. Minding running with endless possibility to what could be going on, her mind always seems to go to the worst-case scenario. Eying the area for any signs of Kate, or anyone else, Lucy blocks out everyone else as she heads in.
Gun held in her right hand tight, trying to ignore the tremor as she using the left to open the door, she takes a deep breath before entering. Creaking and scraping of the metal as she opens it, Lucy is on high alert as she makes her way in, looking for any signs of danger.
Not need to looking knowing the team has her back, the NCIS team creep in and taking in the warehouse that seems to be abandoned. Seeing nothing in the partially empty first floor, only containing rusty metal, Lucy was about to yell her frustration when she see’s Tennant signalling to the stairs that take them to a small office in the far corner.
Focused on the small office, Lucy and Jane, start to head up the stairs. Slowly making it to the top, hearing for any noise, the only sound they here, when they reach the door, is the sound of water dripping. Getting ready and getting the signal, Lucy turns the dusty door knob.
Opening the door, her heart feels like it stops when she sees her wife’s phone and blazer, covered in blood, only able to stare, frozen, everything feels like a blur, when Jesse pulls her away from the door, letting Tennant and Kai in to get a closer look.
In shock, everything happens around her while she stands still, unable to get her brain to process what she saw, what it could mean, and what they have to do now.
Shooting up from her couch, not knowing how much time had passed or how she ended up in her apartment, Lucy tries to catch her breath, feeling like she had been in a nightmare. Feeling a hand on her knee and seeing Ernie sat beside her on the floor, it takes a minute but she can see, he is trying to hold a smile, even if she can see he’s holding back tears, “Where’s Kate” rushes out Lucy.
“Luce” said Jane as she came from the kitchen, now in Lucy's view having the same expression and sadness as Ernie.
Standing up hearing the brokenness in Jane’s tone “We need everyone on this, have we checked hospitals? do they FBI know anything?” rambled Lucy, frustrated she was just asleep while her wife is missing, and potentially injured.
It wasn't until Jane held her shoulders, she noticed she was pacing “Luce, you fainted, just sit down” “No, Kate is out there, she’s hurt” yelled Lucy, now seeing the tears fall from her bosses' eyes.
“Luce, Kate's not hurt”
Pulling away, not liking where this is going “What do you mean she’s not hurt? did you find her? she okay?” crocked out lucy, feeling her mouth go dry.
“Chase ran the blood we found in the office and there was a lot...chase confirmed it was Kate’s” sniffled Jane, trying to get the words out clear enough for Lucy “With the amount of blood we found... Lucy, I'm so sorry but we have reason to believe that Kate...... Kate was killed”
Face dropping from the mixture of a broke heart, anger, devastation and confusion, “She can’t be, I saw her this morning, chase must have this wrong” said Lucy Rasing her voice as tears flow down her face.
“Luce, I'm....” tries to say Jane as she takes a slight step forward to comfort her agent but is cut off “Stop saying sorry, Kate is alive, she has to be alive” Shouts Lucy as her breathing gets more rapid “We just got married, were moving”
Seeing one of her family members, life crumble in front of her eye’s, Jane brings Lucy into a hug, which the brunette tries to fight back “She has to be alive, we have to find her” cries out Lucy, trying to push Jane away.
Only able to say she is sorry Jane fights back, knowing Lucy needs her in this moment “Shh it’s okay” quite repeats Jane, pushing her feelings down to support Lucy.
Eventually giving in and hiding her face in Jane’s neck “She’s gone, my wife is gone” sobs Lucy, loosing feelings in her legs as she cries into Jane, realizing her whole world and future have completely shattered in the matter of hours.
A year later.
Sat on her couch, nursing her 4th whiskey, Lucy half listens to the TV. The last year had been hell with looking for Kate's body or any sign of what happened to her. 2 months into the investigation, it was put on the back burner due to no new evidence since the day it happened. Not giving up the fight for justice for Kate, but struggling, the only way to get through the nights was drinking. It wasn't ideal and it got her into trouble when she showed up to work looking hungover but at this point it didn't matter because Kate wasn't there to stop her from spiraling.
Taking another sip, Lucy leans forward and grabs the bottle, forgetting the glass, drinking away the night until she can focus on work. The team tried to help but how do you help someone who lost someone who meant the world to them and is unable to know what happened.
Drinking as much as she can, Lucy slowly starts to drift to sleep on the couch, hoping for the alarm to go off for work sooner rather than later.
At 3pm, Lucy feels a light shove to her arm, not caring, knowing it's not her alarm she tries to shift on the coach until she hears Ernie’s Voice. “Luce, you need to get up”
Blinking to try and wake herself up, she realizes the whole team is in her house, sitting up quickly worried what the team would say about the mess, knowing she has kept them out of the house for this reason, Lucy stands up “I was going to clean up but....” “Luce that don't matter right now, why haven't you been answering your phone?” interrupted Jane with a tone that Lucy couldn't figure out.
“I fell asleep” replied Lucy walking around the apartment realizing she can't remember where her phone was.
“That doesn't matter right now, but you do need to come to the hospital with us” said Kai,
“Hospital? Why? is it another case?” confusingly asked Lucy wondering why the whole team was here.
Walking over to Lucy, who was still looking for her phone, Jane places both hands on her shoulder, to get her attention “No, I got a phone call from the hospital, when you didn't answer”
Still confused looking at Jane “What? I don't understand”
“Luce, when they couldn't get hold of you, they called me.... Kate might be alive Luce”
