Work Text:
Oikawa has been singing since he was able to talk. When he was a kid, he preferred to sing over talking. His best friend Iwa used to bang on the pots and pans and they were like a mini band. Oikawa singing and Iwa on the makeshift drums. Fast forward to the future and they’re in a hit band called Seijoh. Alongside them were their friends on guitars. Not only was Oikawa the singer but he was the main writer. He liked to control the song from finish to end.
It wasn’t easy to be twenty-one, in a band, and trying to convince your parents that this is what you want to do forever. It’s not the first or last time Oikawa heard his parents tell him to “get a real job.” Oikawa didn’t care what his parents thought because he was living the dream with his best friends, and he wouldn’t change that for the world.
After becoming a big hit in Japan, Seijoh was invited to open for BTS on their international tour. It’ll be the first time the band leaves Tokyo. Unfortunately, they mostly knew Japanese with some English. Oikawa was the only one fluent in English since they started to sing in English to attract more of an international crowd.
It was four am when Iwa arrived at Oikawa’s house. Iwa’s mother offered to drive them to the airport. They waited for a few minutes in the driveway before Iwa decided to go inside. He knew where the Oikawa’s kept their spare key and had no intention of waking everyone up. Quietly, Iwa walks through the house until he gets to Oikawa’s room. To no one’s surprise, Oikawa is still asleep. Only Oikawa could look like a model still even while asleep. Half of Iwa wanted to jump into his bed and sleep while the other knew they had to go. Iwa hated waking up Oikawa because it was never a pleasant experience. He considered leaving Oikawa and letting him miss the flight but that would be just a bigger headache for himself.
At first, he gently pushes Oikawa’s body and whispers to wake up. It takes many pushes and whispers for Oikawa to finally awake from his slumber.
“What the fuck Iwa-chan? It’s only four am. Our flight doesn’t even leave until eight am. You do know I need my beauty sleep? How else would I be this beautiful? I need to be pretty as a peach before our tour.”
“You can sleep on the plane, now get out of bed before I drag you downstairs or leave without you.”
That was all it took for a groaning Oikawa to get out of bed. He quickly got changed and forced Iwa to carry his bags downstairs where Mama Iwaizumi was waiting. With quick greetings, they headed to the airport.
To no one's surprise, they were the first members of the band to arrive. The rest arrived many hours later while Iwa and Oikawa were in the seating area for their flight. Oikawa laid his head on Iwa’s shoulder and fell back asleep until the rest of Seijoh arrived and woke him up.
It wasn’t a secret that Oikawa and Iwa were together. Only the public didn’t know. Some fans had made guesses but no one knew for sure. It’s not like they were hiding it either just didn’t feel the need to announce it. They’ve always been a two-in-one package. You can’t have Iwa without Oikawa and vice versa.
And we could live so happily if no one knows that you’re with me, I’m just kidding.
The plane ride wasn’t too horrible for them since the first stop was Paris. Oikawa always wanted to visit Paris and here he was. It was dreamier than he thought it would be but also packed. While on tour, his goal was to explore each area as much as possible, even if it meant long days and nights. The first stop was the Eiffel Tower so Oikawa could take one of those cheesy tourist photos. Next on the list was the Louvre, Oikawa was thrilled to see the Mona Lisa.
“Iwa-chan you’re even prettier than all the art in the Louvre. I’d pick you over any of these art pieces.”
Iwa couldn’t help but blush and tell Oikawa to shush. He wasn’t embarrassed since this was typical Oikawa behavior but he wasn’t used to Oikawa being so flirty in public.
Finally, the last thing to do in Paris besides eating was to perform. The person who felt the most nervous was Oikawa. He wasn’t sure if they would understand his lyrics since they were mostly in Japanese with only a few lyrics in English. Oikawa surprised the crowd with some French, it wasn’t perfect but he wanted to show some love to Paris and the French Language. The crowd was going wild as the band played solo so Oikawa could drink water and refresh. After the show, they were able to meet some fans. They were always grateful for everyone’s support especially since they were new to the scene.
Early in the morning, they headed back to the airport. This time they were headed to the States. It was always their dream to play in NYC. It was the first time any of them were in the United States. They got off at JFK airport and headed towards Manhattan. Iwa and Oikawa came up with a travel itinerary for NYC. There was so much to do and so little time. One thing no one prepared them for was the time difference.
Oikawa was practically falling asleep on Iwa by the time they got into Manhattan. Instead of exploring, Iwa decided for them to go check into the hotel room. The band had a large suite which was great for the price for how many members they had. The rooms were on a first come first serve basis. Oikawa happened to pick the biggest room and hopped on the bed. Between the travel and playing a show the night before he was exhausted.
“Iwa time to nap, we can explore the city later.” It wasn’t a suggestion, it was an order.
I could stay awake just to hear you breathing, and watch you smile while you are sleeping. While you’re far away and dreaming. I could spend my life in this sweet surrender. I could stay lost in this moment.
After his beauty sleep, Oikawa was ready to go on an adventure. He wanted to know what made New York City different than Tokyo. Times Square was beautiful with the bright lights but it was overcrowded. In the corner of Oikawa’s eye, he could see a billboard with their faces on it.
“Look, guys.” Oikawa couldn’t help but jump up and down and point. This was it, it was everything they’d worked for. Every ounce of practice they put into the band paid off. He made sure to take a photo for his parents but also for social media. He figured it would be best to post after the weekend so fans wouldn’t try to find them tonight.
Tomorrow was the big night at Madison Square Garden. Oikawa had a special new song ready to go. It was a long song about Iwaizumi. The songs that Oikawa sang with the most passion were always about Iwa. Yes, he could write a killer heartbreak song but he loved writing about romance and Iwa.
Before every show, Oikawa would chew a bunch of gum to relieve his anxiety. It doesn’t matter how many shows he’s played, he still was a nervous wreck.
It was time to let the audience know exactly how he felt.
Oikawa looked like a natural in front of the mic even though his nerves were on fire.
“Thank you guys for coming out, for our final song we have a new special one just for you guys. This song is about love and how I feel about someone. It came from my heart so I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did writing it.”
Wherever you go, that's where I'll follow
Nobody's promised tomorrow
So Imma love you every night like it's the last night
Like it's the last night
If the world was ending
I'd wanna be next to you
If the party was over
And our time on Earth was through
I'd wanna hold you just for a while
And die with a smile
If the world was ending
I'd wanna be next to you
It was the perfect song to describe them. Oikawa and Iwa have been together since they were kids. Oikawa remembers watching a boy from his living room window. The boy was running around trying to catch bugs. Oikawa had to beg his mom to let him go outside and talk to the other kid. It wasn’t long until two little boys were running around trying to catch bugs. Iwa wasn’t allowed to catch any of the pretty ones only the gross ones. The only pretty bug that Iwa was allowed to catch was Oikawa.
The crowd went wild over the final song. Oikawa knew that the speech he made was going to stir up the magazines. They were going to question him about who the song was about. It was no one’s business except theirs.
“Iwa-chan how did you like that last song tonight?”
“It was really good, wonder who it’s about.”
There’s no way he can be that dense, he has to be kidding.
“It’s obviously about someone special, you.”
“I knew that idiot.”
There was only one more stop on the tour for them. While BTS had a full world tour, Seijoh was only the opening band at some locations. The final stop for Seijoh was San Diego, California.
The first thing the boys thought was that it was hot there, especially coming from New York. It was so beautiful. Oikawa loves the beach. The only plus to it being the last stop on their adventure is that they could spend extra days exploring. There was no rush to go to another location or even home.
Everything they worked for led up to this exact moment.
They picked two songs with opposite feelings to finish off the tour. The first one was Lose You and the second one was You’re Still The One.
Oikawa remembers writing Lose you. Iwa and he had gotten into a bad argument. It was over something stupid. Something stupid that escalated into a huge fire. Oikawa can still feel the pain he was in that night. He was so upset and the only thing that he could do was write and cry. He thought that their relationship was over. Oikawa knows he couldn’t live without Iwa.
You say you're packing your bags
This isn't what I thought forever would be
You're walking out so casually
How could you give up on us like that?
Baby, I'm not ready to lose you yet
Oh, why can't you see I got nothing left?
I'm begging you
I'm not ready to lose you, no
They were mad at each other for a few days. Oikawa had showed up at Iwa’s house not ready to let him go. Eventually, many apologies and tears later, things were fine.
The second song was when Oikawa realized how much he loved Iwa. How over time things have been tough but he was his soulmate. No matter what challenges they faced, they were in it together. People thought they would break up or that fame would get to them but they stayed strong.
When I first saw you, I saw love .
And the first time you touched me, I felt love.
Mmm, yeah
Looks like we made it
Look how far we've come, my baby
We mighta took the long way
We knew we'd get there someday
They said, "I bet they'll never make it"
But just look at us holdin' on
We're still together, still goin' strong
At the end of the show, each member got a chance to thank the audience. Iwa decided he would toss his drumsticks. It was the perfect ruse for him to catch Oikawa off guard. After tossing his drumsticks into the audience he got on one knee.
“Oikawa Tooru, will you marry me? I don’t want to hide us anymore. I want you to be either an Iwaizumi or to add it to your last name. I want the world to know you’re mine.”
Everyone knew that this was going to happen except Oikawa. He was ugly crying in front of the audience. He didn’t think Iwa was going to propose. Oikawa even thought he would be the one to propose one day. He had already started to look at rings too.
“Yes Iwa-chan, I’ll marry you and I want to know who helped you come up with this romantic idea. I bet it was Mama Iwaizumi.”
Oikawa helped Iwazumi off his one knee and held his hand as they headed backstage. Finally, they could kiss. Oikawa hopped onto Iwa, wrapping his arms around him and kissing him slowly.
All of Oikawa’s dreams came true on this tour. He was able to travel the world with his best friends and came back with a Fiance. Oikawa couldn’t wait to tell his family but they already knew. Iwa had asked for their blessing before proposing. Even though, he was sure that Oikawa’s family would say yes, he thought it was the right thing to do. Oikawa needed to pinch himself multiple times on the flight home to make sure it wasn’t a dream.
Is this real life? Is this just a fantasy?
