Chapter 1: 1. Sonnet for The Hero's Return

Chapter Text

Sonnet for The Hero’s Return

The road I follow home is paved the same,

The smiles on passing faces gleam as bright

As they did once, before I knew his name,

His beauty or his magic or his might.

Unshaken, the familiar walls of stone

House comrades brave as they have ever been,

Yet as I lie in my own bed alone,

And think and think and think and think on him,

The road, the walls, the bed, seem harsh and small,

The grins of triumph curl towards cruelty,

For I have seen so far beyond them all;

They have not changed, but me, my mind is free.

The world that I once knew has gone amiss

Since he first cured my vision with his kiss.

Notes:

So this was written as a warm-up for myself to make sure I got the central mood and theme of a story clear. Then I decided I liked it enough to publish independently. I like the idea of Damien processing his thoughts through poems, so there may be more of these in the future.
