Work Text:

Alyssa had always known that love was a powerful, consuming force. But when she met Daniel, she finally understood just how far that consumption could go.

They met in the dense forests of the Pacific Northwest, where Alyssa had traveled to escape the city and embrace a simpler life. She rented a small cabin, hoping to write, but found herself captivated by the rugged wilderness instead. It was on a misty morning hike that she first saw him, standing by a stream, his lean frame outlined against the water, his eyes dark and magnetic.

Daniel lived alone in an isolated cabin deeper in the woods. With no phone, no electricity, and hardly any connection to the outside world, he was as mysterious as the woods themselves. Yet he was gentle and kind, guiding Alyssa to hidden trails and sharing stories of his life in the wild. Their bond grew quickly, intense and all-encompassing, like a vine winding tightly around its host.

But there was something else—a darkness Alyssa couldn’t shake. Daniel would vanish for days, only to return pale and quiet, as if haunted by something he couldn’t name. She told herself he was just different, that his isolation had made him mysterious and intriguing. Still, she couldn’t deny the shadows in his eyes or the sickly sweet smell that clung to his clothes on his return.

One night, Daniel invited her to his cabin for dinner. She arrived, heart pounding, feeling both excitement and an eerie sense of foreboding. His cabin was small, lit only by candles, and the air was filled with the scent of something cooking—a rich, savory aroma that made her mouth water.

“Sit,” he murmured, gesturing to a wooden chair. “I’ve made something special.”

He placed a plate before her, a tender, glistening piece of meat arranged artfully atop a bed of herbs. She took a bite, savoring the rich, buttery flavor. It was unlike anything she had ever tasted. She looked up, catching Daniel’s gaze as he watched her, his eyes sharp, studying her with an intensity that sent a thrill through her spine.

“This is incredible,” she whispered, her voice shaky. “What… what is it?”

He paused, then leaned closer. “It’s a part of me, Alyssa. A piece of my devotion.”

Her heart skipped a beat as she tried to laugh it off, but his expression remained solemn. She wanted to pull away, to spit out the food, but something in his gaze held her captive, a dark allure that made her feel as if she were teetering on the edge of a deep, forbidden chasm.

“This… this is a game, right?” she asked, forcing a smile, though her skin had gone cold.

Daniel only continued to watch her, his eyes unblinking. “I’ve given you a part of myself, Alyssa. So that we can always be together.”

The realization crashed over her like ice, and she felt nausea roiling in her stomach. She pushed the plate away, but the taste lingered, sweet and horrifying. Her mind screamed at her to run, but her body felt rooted in place, paralyzed by the intensity of his gaze.

“Don’t you feel it?” he murmured, reaching for her hand. “This is how I love. Entirely. I give everything to the one I love.”

She yanked her hand back, and for the first time, she saw a flicker of something terrifying in his eyes—a hunger, raw and unrestrained.

“Daniel… this isn’t… love,” she whispered, the words barely audible.

“Isn’t it?” he replied, a dark smile spreading across his face. “Love is about surrendering. About sacrifice. I thought you’d understand.”

Alyssa stumbled out of the chair, the candlelight flickering wildly as she backed toward the door. But before she could move, he was in front of her, his hand gently stroking her cheek, his eyes filled with a terrible, consuming passion.

“Don’t you see, Alyssa?” he murmured, his voice soft, his touch gentle. “Now you’re a part of me. And soon… soon, I’ll be a part of you.”

Her scream echoed through the forest as she ran, her vision blurred by tears, her mind fractured by horror. She stumbled through the trees, the taste of him still clinging to her tongue, haunting her, twisting the memory of their love into something monstrous and grotesque.

Days passed, but the memory of that night lingered, festering like a wound. She could still feel him, like a shadow haunting her every step. And sometimes, when she woke in the dark, she could still taste him on her lips—a reminder of a love that had taken root deep within her, feeding on her fears, her memories, and perhaps, in time, her very soul.
