Work Text:

Sitting at the pond, the scenery peaceful. Trees surrounded a clearing full of fresh grads and chirping birds. The two sit on the ground staring at the tranquil scenery, occasionally interrupted by conversation

“The flowers are beautiful, no?” She says to medkit; tilting her head and smiling at him. He stays silent, admiring what lies around him. “Indeed. I must thank you for bringing me here, vinestaff.” He holds her hand, squeezing it.

“You know, when I first met you I was elated to have someone like me around. I’m so glad to be here with you.” He says the words with sincerity, looking at her with a complex expression, albeit different from his usual stoic one. She beamed and squeezed him in a hug. “Awwhh! I love you too, medkit!”

The medic let out a noise of surprise, but sunk quickly into the hug. He closed his eyes and breathed in the faint flowery scent that emitted from her. They sat for a while before pulling away and blushing awkwardly. Vinestaff picks up a flower from the ground and places it in his hair, the wooden arm lightly brushing it away. He reached to take it out before she gently grabbed his hand and said, “keep it. It looks nice on you.”

That afternoon, he placed it in a jar of water on his windowsill, treasuring the gift he had received. He made sure to check on it every day.

The cafe, a little empty now that it was evening. The two meet again, sitting in a booth. The water almost stung from how cold it was, going down his throat. He listened to her ramble about her plants, her family and other things in her life for hours. He loved the sound of her voice, blabbering away as he watched and listened. The gardener was very expressive, hands moving with every word she spoke.

“Medkit?” She snaps him out of his staring. “Medkit, are you okay?” He looks back at her, a little wide eyed. Well, he was perfectly fine.

“Yeah, i’m okay. Just zoned out for a second.” Once she realized he was okay, she resumed her yapping as he went back to listening.

“Oh, and I have something for you.” She reached into her bag, rummaging through it before pulling out a large ring. She held it out to him and said, “here, I have one too. Now we can match!” She placed the ring on one of the appendages growing from his horns, and placed the other on her own. “You’re very pretty.” The gardener blurted the sentence out, she quickly flushed and gasped. The two sat in awkward silence before medkit exchanged the compliment. “I think you’re very pretty as well. .”

The medic was taking a walk to clear his head. He walked through thieves den, the faction’s scenery was beautiful and he thought it was very appealing to the eye.

He spots vinestaff watering her plants in her garden. She waves to him, “hello medkit! Would you like to listen to the birds with me?” He nods and walks over to her, being careful to not step on any of her flowers. She puts the watering can down and gestures towards two lawn chairs; they both sit down and have a small chat.

“Your flowers are very beautiful. . Do you think you’d be able to teach me how to grow some?” He turns to her and asks a little uncertainly. “Oh, yes of course! Here,” she places a small bag of seeds in his hands, “put 2-3 seeds in a pot of soil and put in a sunny area such as on a windowsill. Water it once a week or so. If you want, I can come over dome time to teach you more!” She ends her phrase with another smile. He nodded again and looked at the seeds, sakura to be exact. Returning the smile, he’s glad to have someone who cares for him. For the longest time he’s had no one.

“Medkit, you know I dont have much time left.” They both sit on the ground at the very same park it fees like they were just at. She holds his face in her hands in a soothing way, wiping away his tears as he say there in silence. He throws himself into her arms, sobbing into her shoulder. She rubs his back as a comforting action, which just makes him cry more.

He leans away, hunching his shoulders and slouching as he looks back at her, eyes pleading, for he wishes she wouldn’t leave his side. They both return to the position they were once in, the gardener speaking once more.

“Please live a happy life for both of us, I’m sorry I couldn’t stay here any longer for you.” She picks up one of his hands covered by a white silk glove and leaves a gentle kiss on it, the glove now stained with her lipstick.

The gardener attempts to change the subject slightly, “out scars don’t define us, you know? Just because I have been cursed with this ever growing arm, that does not change me as a person.” She returns the hand to bis face, softly removing his eye patch with a small “may I?” Medkit nods curtly, allowing her to take it off of his face. “And you as well, the scar on your face does not make you any less than I.”

He has always thought of the scar as grotesque, ugly. She is the only one who made him feel like he was so much mote than that. More than just his blemishes and bruises. The huge scar on his face reminded him of his terrible past, she was the one who made him forget about it. . Oh how he’ll miss her presence. “Medkit, promise me you’ll find someone even better than me when i’m gone. I want you to be happy.”

———————————————

After everyone had cleared out, he sat by the grave. He placed down the flower, the one she had put in his hair. The ring, the matching one they had both put on their horns. The packet of seeds which she’d promised to help him grow. And finally, he removed his glove, the lipstick stained fabric placed by the headstone. A sprout stood to the left of it, a sign she was still with him even if not physically.

He sat there feeling so many emotions at once, so overwhelmed that he couldn’t even let the tears spill down his face.

“I felt so much joy when with you. You made me feel like a person instead of turning me away like everyone else. I was so glas to have found someone who was like me. I was so glad to have found someone who was like me. You told me to find someone better than you, but I know there will be no other person who will outshine your beauty, your kindness and your sympathy for others. You treated everyone with kindness and I wish I could have been more like you. .”

He spoke between sniffles and sobs, tears landing in the dirt.

The medic got no sleep that night, he kept rambling to no one, whispering things such as “you were my everything,” as if she was still there. He missed her comforting embrace, her scent and her smile. He mourned her loss and spent most of his days grieving.

Eventually, he cracked. The gun on his bedside table, loaded with bullets. A well aimed shot to the heart was all it took for him to flatline. The grief was too much, he couldn’t carry on for her.

A note was left on the ground by his bleeding, dead body. It read,

“I’m sorry I couldn’t keep living for you. I promised I would go on for you, but I broke that promise and took a cowards way out. I hope to see you in the afterlife, where we can be in peace and finally be together again. -M”
