The night is full. The moon whole, with little visible clouds and freckles of stars dotting the bruised sky.
I have never been good with art, but if I was, the sky would be a main fixture in my works—specifically the night sky and the moon. I had always wished that my aunt would listen to a prayer given to her by a boy. Given her predisposition to ignore that, I found the chances slim.
Anyways, I sat on the roof swinging my legs, admiring the sky, unsettled by the sadness that filled me. Pinpointing it was impossible, it felt. It was like a dull edge of nostalgia being pressed slowly into my chest.
I turned from surveying the night to watching the ground. My eyes traveled to the edges of Ares cabin, already reminiscing about the live landmines spread around. Demeter’s cabin, that felt like a faraway mother. Hades’ cabin and the need to tell everything to its inhabitant.
A shadow moved below toward the now dimly glowing Apollo cabin. Dimly was an exaggeration. Apollo still takes pride in being the brightest cabin.
I heard the quiet scuffling of limbs and the whisper of my dagger being pulled out of its sheath. I doubt it was a monster, but better safe than sorry.
My boyfriend’s dark, shaggy head popped up.
“Hey.”
“Hey.” He saw my face and sat next to me. Then he hugged me and just let me be sad. He didn’t ask me any questions; he just let me feel. That’s one part of my love for him. I am allowed to feel without worry.
He released me and put his head on my shoulder, swinging his legs in rhythm with mine.
