Work Text:
“Cassandra!” Sam screamed in her sleep loud enough to wake up both herself and her partner. Sam flew out of bed and down the hallway. By the time Janet got to Sam, Sam was kneeling next to Cassandra’s bed. Putting her hands on Sam’s shoulders Janet could feel Sam trembling. Wrapping her arms around Sam, Janet bent down and whispered, “It’s all right. You’re all right. Cassandra’s all right. She is safe, sleeping peacefully in her bed in her new home—our home. You saved her. You figured it out.” Pulling Sam up she encouraged, “Come on. Let’s go back to bed. She’ll be fine.” Easing off the floor, Sam allowed Janet to guide her slowly out of Cassandra’s room back to their room.
Once inside their room, Sam collapsed in wracking sobs on the bed. All Janet could do was hold her and whisper words of comfort. Finally, Sam had cried herself to sleep. When she was sure Sam wouldn’t wake up again, Janet allowed herself to relax enough to fall asleep.
Janet awoke before Sam the next morning. “She really wore herself out last night,” Janet observed her sleeping beauty. When Sam finally stirred and woke, big, red, puffy eyes met Janet’s concerned gaze. “He-ey,” Janet said using her trademark two-syllable ‘hey,’ “How are you feeling?”
“Scared,” Sam admitted. After receiving a curious look from Janet, Sam asked, “She’s really okay, right? She’s safe?”
“Yes,” Janet hugged her tight. As if on cue, Cassandra walked into their bedroom and crawled into bed with them. “Are you okay, Cassandra?” Sam asked, her concern rising.
“Yeah, I’m fine. Why?”
“No reason.” Sam turned and wrapped Cassandra in an embrace. After releasing the embrace, Cassandra squirmed her way in between Sam and Janet. Giving Janet a quick hug, she fell back to sleep murmuring, “I love you both.”
Smiles lit up the two women’s faces as they linked hands above the girl’s waist. Noticing a yawn from Janet, Sam suggested, “Let’s go back to sleep. We have the rest of the week to take our daughter out and teach her about Earth.”
“Sounds fantastic!” Janet replied as the three of them snuggled together to sleep the day—and previous stresses--away.
