Work Text:

Sans was... tired to be honest. Tired of dreaming of the surface but waking up to the underground. Tired of seeing his brother die in his nightmares. Of seeing everyone die in his nightmares. Watching the human approach him, Sans let a quiet sigh out, his eyesockets closing as he wondered what he should say. He knew that the kid could reset, he was pretty sure they were the anomaly in the reports that Alphys got. He [CHECKED] them, already knowing what he would see but wanting to make sure anyways.

"so... ... ..." Sans muttered out, his voice quiet and low as he exited the menu. "you've been busy, huh?" He knew they were. He watched as they killed his brother. Sans let a growl out as he shifted his position. He was angry, but more so with himself than anything. He let his baby bro die. Damn his laziness. Not that he could change that, being tired all the time came with having low HP. He doubted the extra HP he got from sleeping would help any.

"let me ask you a question." He continued, not caring about the human's lack of response. "do you think that someone can change?" Sans sure didn't, that type of thinking was Papyrus's, not his. He didn't see the best in himself, let alone people. "that even the worst person could be better, if they just try? " The skeleton monster watched as the monsters 'fallen angel' took another step forward. Seemed not, but then again, that expression they wore... they'd already heard his whole spiel before anyways.

"heh... how about another question..?" Sans let his eye-lights flicker out and the tight hold on his magic loosen a little, giving the room a sudden pressure it didn't have before. "Do you wanna have a bad time?" No reaction, again. Oh well, not like Sans cared about it. They took another step forward and Sans felt the weird, sweat-like substance that he produced gathering at the back of his skull. They had a pretty intimidating presence, but nothing that Sans hadn't felt when he helped in the war.

"heh heh heh...." Sans was pretty close to just starting the battle. He just wanted this done and overwith. "you take another step forward? and you really won't like what happens next." Sans wondered what Papyrus would do if he was faced in this situation.

Heh... he'd probably still try to redeem them, even after everything they'd done. Sans wasn't going to do that though. They took another step and Sans left the last part of his whole speech and just started the battle. He had no reason to hold his magic back now and he threw his first attack, slamming them down to the ground as bones sprouted from the ground. They dodged of course, this obviously wasn't the first time they'd fought him, probably wasn't the first time they killed him either. He just gave a not-so fake chuckle as he watched their expression turn from indifference to annoyance.

"what? you didn't really think that i'd just stand there, and take it did ya?" Sans ended his turn with that, a little less shocked than he should be at the speed they chose to fight. He dodged, of course, their attacks were pitifully easy to be honest. Seems like they just focused on power instead of patterns. Their turn ended and his started, obviously, and he just sent a simple, easy pattern. Bone jumps. Wasn't too hard and the human only got hit once or twice. "y'know... the reports showed an anomaly. timelines stopping, starting... jumping all over the place." Sans let them have their turn and their next pattern was literally just a knife swinging side to side. His turn again, more complicated bone jumps. They still dodged, better than last time. "heh heh heh... that's you're fault, isn't it?" Sans knew it was, he dodged their pattern easily this time. Sans sent bones flying at them, watching them dodge horribly this time, before he threw them into a wall with blue magic. They didn't really think he'd stick to his same old patterns everytime, right?

Their next attack was sloppy and less of a pattern than the ones before. Sans still dodged it easily, not really physically exhausted. "y'know... i stopped trying to go back a long time ago..." Sans saw faint images of him and Papyrus together, younger. He could almost remember what the guy who took them both in looked like. "and... getting to the surface doesn't really appeal anymore, either." Pushing the memories to the back of his soul, Sans threw the human upwards, spawning bones right above them. They didn't dodge at all. He watched as their HP quickly dropped to one, their sins working as a decent poison. They healed on their turn, and Sans just sent bone jumps at varying heights and speeds, watching them dodge most of them, only getting hit twice. "cause... even if we do... ... ...we'll just end up right back here, without any memory of it, right?" The dejavu from waking up today had been strange, but it all made sense now. He was starting to feel exhausted, mentally. He dodged the next attack, barely moving as their locket swung right past him. He was going to have to start saving energy pretty soon if the fight went on like this.

An arena of bones spanwed under their feet as platforms started flying by. They made most of the jumps, stumbling here and there as he sent an odd bone flying at them. It was kinda funny, watching them stumble through an attack for the first time. "to be honest..." Sans was out of breath at this point, he'd need to stall soon. "it really makes it hard to give it my all." No it doesn't, Sans is giving it his best shot, and pretty soon they'll see his ' all' . He dodged their poor excuse of a pattern and sighed, taking a deep breath before throwing them up and to the side, already sending bones flying after them. "or... is that just a poor excuse for being lazy? hell if I know..." Sans once again evaded their attack, already feeling his bones disagreeing with dodging for real again.

His next turn, he spared them. "uh... on second thought..." Sans wasn't really feeling the whole sparing thing, but he had to try. Papyrus would've wanted him to. "you uh... really like swinging that thing around, huh?" They probably already know what's going on, if the look they're giving him is something to go off of. "ah... listen... ... ... maybe we got off on the wrong foot? all this fighting? totally tiring me out right now..." Sans knew they weren't going to spare him. They obviously knew what would happen if they did. "so... why don't you just... put that knife down and... well, it'd make my job a whole lot easier. c'mon kid... you... remember me? the others?" He saw the attack coming from a mile away to be honest, for a full blown murderer, they had terrible form. Instead of dodging, he pushed them back with blue magic, making them miss instead.

His magic wasn't something to sneeze at, even Asgore had said so. So, he wasn't shocked when the human tensed up in preparation as he let go of any binds he had on it. HIs eye-lights went out as his magic swelled. "Heh. Guess you wanna do things the hard way... huh?" Freezing time, Sans spawned more bones than necessary and let them go, watching the human freak dodge them sloppily, taking a decent amount of damage. They healed and he sent a easier pattern at them, bones and blue attacks. "y'know... this may sound funny, but before all this? i was kinda hoping that we could be friends. i thought that the anomaly was doing this because they were bored and... once they got what they wanted, they'd stop all of this." They rushed him after that, but he pushed them back with blue magic again and started using the blasters. Their beams of raw magic could really deal some damage, and they were faster than the human was used to, it seemed. "heh heh heh... that's ridiculous though, right? yeah, you're the type of person who won't ever be happy." They attacked again, this time he tripped them with a small bone and started his next attack. Bones came down and up from both sides of them, they dodged that one pretty easily. He could tell that they were getting tired as well, finally. After pushing their arm to the side with blue magic to make a throw at him miss, he slammed them to the side, bones sprouting from the wall they were against. He kept flinging them around, a zone of bones always ready to come out and meet them when they landed. "but uh... all this fighting? it's really getting to me."

They had to heal after that attack, so he just sent a platforming attack, blasters firing from either side periodaclly. "and someday? you're gonna learn when to quit." They tried a few swings at them, each of them missing as they were pushed out of reach. He sent dozens of blasters after them next, spawning them in at random places and firing them off immediately. They got hit a few times, but still attacked, this one being blocked via bone wall, which he sent at them to start the next attack. He was getting tired, for real, but he had to keep going, to see if he could hold them off a little bit longer. He kept faking them out on attacks, bone jumps suddenly turning into a bone arena with only platforms to land on, flickering into blasters surrounding them and firing. They were reaching the limit of their knowledge and skill apparently. "and that day's today . because we both know we can't go on forever." They attacked and he flung them into a wall and into the next attack. The room flickered as time paused and unpaused, a volley of bones surrounding them, before the attack switched into big blasters firing down at them from above, flickering again into bones racing towards them from either side.

"if you keep going... i'll be forced to use my special attack. yeah, my special attack. sound familar?" Sans pushed them away with blue magic, noting the smaller distance they were pushed away. Shit, he didn't think that he'd been pushing his magic to it's limits already. Pushing on, Sans slammed them into a wall, then up and then down and then to the side again, bones sprouting from the walls, floor and ceiling to meet them. They kept on dodging them and his attacks were coming slower and slower. His magic was pretty much at it's limit. "fine then. if you won't stop..." His eye-lights went out again as he gathered what little magic he had left. "Survive this and I'll show you my special attack." Sans flung them to the right and then up, bones coming down from either side of them before he flung them to the right again. Flinging them to the left, Sans expanded his attack range to cover the whole hall, and sent a wave of bones at them, more bones coming from up and down as they continued to fall down the corridor. Slamming into the wall, the room flickered as time froze and unfroze, bones sprouting from the ground and wall, flickering the human to the ceiling where more bones sprouted, and again down to the ground before finally, Sans pushed all of his remaining magic into every blaster he could muster. A ring of pure waves of magic assualted the human, dealing more and more damage. It wasn't enough though... Sans's magic ran out before he could kill them. He felt his turn end and... just accepted his fate. He could only hope that Asgore had absorbed the souls by now, that all the monsters remaining had been hidden away until the king erradicated the freak, not that it'd do much good.

He felt as the knife dragged across his bones, splitting them open and causing blood to slowly stain his shirt and jacket. Funny... he didn't know he could bleed, he thought all of his marrow had dried up when he was still a babybones. "so... uh... that's it, huh?" Sans couldn't really bring himself to be sad, he really didn't feel anything. If his hunch was right, he'd just wake up after this, not remembering a thing and doing it all over again. "well... just don't say i didn't warn ya, yeah?" Sans slowly stood up, not even realizing that he'd been on his ass. "welp... i'm going to grillby's... ... ... Papyrus, do you want anything?" Sans felt his soul finally give out, no more magic to hold it together, along with his body. As he dusted, Sans thought he could see Papyrus Infront of him, a great big smile as he welcomed Sans into the afterlife.
