Chapter 1: Lost sanity

Chapter Text

It was weird. Sitting alone at lunch while everyone fawned over your cousin. I mean, he wasn’t even all that! He was just tall and foreign. You were foreign too, how come literally no one was interested in you? Sure you weren’t the best looking, but you knew for a fact you weren’t ugly enough for this treatment(being none at all).

It wasn’t just weird, but also irritating seeing everyone flock to your cousin since the moment he arrived. So without a soul to talk to, you packed up your lunch and headed to the rooftop(main character shiiii). It was always calm there.

When you arrived, you were nothing but pleased to see the area secluded as usual. Then taking a seat on the concrete ground, taking out your phone, and unpacking the rest of your glorious lunch. Scrolling through instagram and seeing all your friends who didn’t have to move was practically hell. One because they’re your friends so it’s not like you’d ever want them to not be happy, but longing for someone to understand was such a harsh punishment. And two because they could all meet up, and talk about the latest drama, who’s been getting on their nerves, and people they don’t like in general. Knowing your friends though, sooner or later without your presence you’d fall into the topic through one of those categories.

Still lost in thought, mindlessly scrolling through reels you barely noticed that someone else had opened the door to the rooftop and began staring holes in the back of your head.

“Hey”

He(judging by the voice) called out to you in a curious manner. Low and behold when you turn around you’re met with a dude standing a few feet behind you. He had purple hair with a big ol headband(not trying to ruin the story but someone HAD to say it. That headband takes up damn near his whole forehead).

Your Japanese wasn’t the greatest so it took all your strength just to manage a weak “hi” in response.

“You’re that new guy’s cousin right? You two look alike..except one of you has the voice of a seraph, the eyes that the gods envy, and the beauty of a porcelain doll” He came closer and looked at you with eyes that twinkled so brightly.

What.the.fuck.

He walked around dramatically as if he was in some sort of play when he spoke.

“I Toritsuka Reita sense your loneliness, a fair but lonely maiden with her heart frozen over by the cold realities of the world! I shall show you warmth!..for the small price of you telling me the color of your panties of course”

“...”

Luckily you didn’t overreact in such an unbelievable situation. Obviously screaming and running off the roof to the bathroom was the best course of action.

Looking at your reflection in the mirror brought you some kind of peace of mind. Your friends wouldn't be able to stay in their seats when they heard about this! Though you were in different timezones, they could read you messages when they woke up..if you had your phone that is.

Damnit! How the hell did you forget your phone? The only thing making you seem like less of a ‘lonely maiden’. Yes you! Reading this right now, how much dumber could you be?

Then in the midst of your panicking, the bell rang. What excuse could you have for being late to class? You left your phone and lunchbox on the rooftop(where you're not even supposed to be) because some pervert started speaking like Shakespeare and asked the color of your panties? Everyone would think you're schizophrenic! So as wrong as it felt, you walked to class without your phone or lunchbox, waiting until the final bell so you could finally retrieve it.

Time couldn’t pass any slower, but you sat through the entire class without showing your classmates withdrawal symptoms from losing the only thing keeping you sane<33

So when the bell rang you were out the door with the speed of light behind you. Back to the rooftop and right back to the place you sat.

It was gone.

Did that pervert take it?! Who knows, he might be sniffing it right now and doing god knows what! And what was the point of taking your lunchbox too? Was he that hungry to steal the last two bites of a sandwich and sip of a juice box?

So with nothing else to do, you went to the front of school and waited for your now famous cousin to hurry up so you could walk home together. No one paid you any mind but it still felt so damn awkward just standing there without your phone. There was nothing else to do to pass the time. School had ended ten minutes ago and he still wasn’t here.

You went back to your second favorite place in school, that’s right. The amazingly awesome bathroom! Stepping into the cube of the great and sealing the door shut, you sat on the throne.

Precognition and remote viewing; those were your psychic abilities. No one in school knew about it except your cousin. You couldn’t control them the best, so in your opinion it was better to just keep your mouth shut about it all. The powers only really kicked in when you were in danger so to keep yourself out of any potential trouble you tried to leave it be.

Sometimes it’d be hard to tell if they had activated or not. For example, last week your neighbor offered you some cookies she had baked, but remote vision kicked in making the box see through. Because of that you thought they were poisoned and went to tell your cousin about it. When you went to take off the top you realized she just didn't have one on, and your power did not in fact kick in. Another time you had a nightmare you left the stove on and it almost caused a house fire. How were you supposed to know it was precognition and not just a bad dream? Lucky lucky you, your cousin was born with these powers. Yours just kicked in before you moved to Japan, so you have the struggles he had at age three.

But it’s worth a try! Doing small tasks like this could help you gain more control, and you needed to start somewhere.

You closed your eyes and tried to focus on something. Your cousin. Focus on your cousin. Harder. Put all your energy into finding your cousin.

Soon a movie like thought, feeling more like a memory popped into your head. It was your front door, but it was dark out. You couldn't make out much besides your cousin standing there talking to someone.

“My cousin? Yeah she’s home; I’ll go get her for you.”

The vision was becoming clearer with every second. You could see the person he was talking to was average height, but just before you could make out any other characteristics your focus was broken. Like a vase slamming into the ground.

“L/N? Your brother is looking for you!”

Some random girl shouted out in the bathroom. One of his fan girls maybe? She probably wasn’t listening to a word he said after he told her to get you from the bathroom. Never mind, there's no doubt she wasn’t considering she just called him your brother.

“Coming!”

You hopped out the stall to see the girl who had called for you leaning on the counter with a twinkie in her mouth. She had brown hair put into a pig tail like style, big glasses-wait. Are her lenses missing? Uh whatever.

“Heyy, I said your name right, right? Once your brother offered me a twinkie to come get you I couldn’t wait to hear the rest and just ran off to find you while he was still telling me your name” She laughed a little in an effort to lighten the mood.

“Yeah, you’re fine. Are you friends with him?”
The conversation extended until the two of you reached the front gate. Throughout the entire conversation, you just hoped your accent didn’t make it too difficult for her to understand.

She waved you goodbye once you both saw your cousin waiting for you with a smile.

You hurried over and began to walk home 20 minutes after school let out.

“Made a new friend, huh?”
“I dunno..she’s really nice but she might be like that with everyone.”
“Maybe. But then she can introduce you to more people, yeah?”
“..”
He stopped walking and looked at you for a moment.
“You need to start making friends here. Get comfortable because we aren't going anywhere for a while.”
“I know I know.” You scoffed at his attempt to scold you.
“By the way..”
“Hm?”
“What the hell were you doing in the bathroom for 7 minutes until Mera came?”

Sometimes..walking faster is the answer to your problems.
