Work Text:

The Las Vegas skyline shimmered with neon brilliance, a perfect backdrop to a historic night for Red Bull Racing. Max Verstappen stood hoisted high on the shoulders of his engineers, a broad grin lighting up his face as the team around him cheered. The photographers snapped picture after picture of the reigning champion, immortalizing the moment when Max claimed his fourth World Championship title.

The buzz of champagne bottles being uncorked began to ripple through the crowd. The celebration was reaching its most chaotic and jubilant point, and Max’s ears caught the telltale laughter of Sergio “Checo” Pérez.

Max’s gaze flicked downward, and he spotted Checo slipping out of the crowd, clearly intent on avoiding the champagne spray. Max’s grin widened mischievously. Not this time, Checo.

With the feline grace of a predator, Max shifted his weight. “Hold steady!” he barked at the engineers holding him. Before they could even question him, Max leapt from their shoulders.

His landing was far from graceful—an audible thud and a stagger—but he was already surging forward. His sights were locked on Checo, who had paused just long enough to look back and realize he was being pursued. The Mexican driver’s eyes widened, and then he laughed—really laughed, his voice light and carefree.

It was a sound Max hadn’t realized he’d missed so much.

He hadn’t heard this real, unguarded laugh from Checo in what felt like years. Since Brazil 2022, Max realized, the man’s joy had become muted. The Checo who had once bonded with him over inside jokes, late-night conversations, and tequila shots had been replaced by a version of him that wore a carefully trained smile. The politics of F1 and the weight of Red Bull’s expectations had dulled his spark, reduced his laughter to a polite PR chuckle.

But here, in this moment, it was back. Checo’s laughter was raw, genuine, and filled with the warmth Max had almost forgotten.

“Max, no!” Checo’s voice was a mix of amusement and panic as he tried to quicken his escape.

“No running!” Max called out, his steps quickening. With a final lunge, he caught Checo by the waist, pulling him into a tight embrace.

“Let me go!” Checo squirmed, laughing harder now as Max tightened his grip. “I don’t want to be sprayed—”

“You don’t get to run away from this!” Max shot back, his own laughter bubbling up. “We celebrate together .”

The champagne burst around them, cold and sticky as it drenched their race suits. The noise of the celebration seemed to fade, the cheering and laughter of the team blending into a distant hum. For Max, the world narrowed to the man in his arms.

Checo’s hair was damp, the strands clinging to his forehead. Droplets sparkled on his skin, catching the lights from the paddock like tiny jewels. His cheeks were flushed, his eyes crinkling with laughter. Max couldn’t stop staring.

This was it. This was the man who had stood by his side through highs and lows, the man who had smiled even when the world demanded more than it gave. Max realized, with an almost shocking clarity, that he was in love.

The thought hit him like a bolt of lightning, electric and undeniable. It wasn’t just Checo’s laugh, though God, he’d missed that. It was everything—his kindness, his strength, the way he cared for everyone around him. Checo wasn’t just his teammate. He was the person Max wanted to be around, the one who made him feel like more than a champion, more than a driver.

Before Max could second-guess himself, before the weight of reality could sink in, he leaned down and kissed Checo.

The kiss was a moment of pure instinct. Checo froze, his laughter abruptly silenced. Max’s hands found their way to Checo’s face, cradling him as if he might disappear if he let go. The champagne spray continued around them, a curtain of chaos shielding them from prying eyes.

Checo stiffened in his arms, his body going rigid as the shock of the kiss froze him in place. His wide, startled eyes stared into Max’s, like a deer caught in headlights. For a moment, Max felt time stretch, unsure if he had made the right move, unsure if this would be the end of everything they’d built.

But then, something shifted in him. He felt the weight of the years—the missed chances, the laughter they’d shared, the moments he’d let slip by without acknowledgment. He thought of the countless times he’d glanced over at Checo on the grid or during brief moments in the garage, his heart tugging in ways he hadn’t dared to analyze. The regret of not acting sooner burned in his chest.

No. He wasn’t going to let this be a moment of hesitation.

Max pressed closer, his hands framing Checo’s face and neck with deliberate gentleness as he deepened the kiss. His lips moved against Checo’s, pouring everything he couldn’t say into the gesture—the relief of the championship win, the joy of hearing Checo laugh again, and the overwhelming realization that he was in love.

The taste of champagne mingled between them, sweet and sharp, as the kiss grew more insistent. Max could feel Checo’s breath catch against his lips, the faintest tremble in his shoulders betraying his uncertainty. Yet Max didn’t let go. His thumbs brushed along Checo’s jawline, coaxing him to relax, to stay.

The chaos around them seemed to fade entirely. The cheers and laughter of their team, the sticky spray of champagne soaking their suits, the bright glare of cameras—it all became background noise to the raw, unfiltered moment unfolding between them.

When Checo finally softened, his lips parting just slightly, it was like oxygen flooding Max’s lungs. He poured even more of himself into the kiss, feeling a surge of possessiveness and relief. This was what he wanted, what he had wanted for so long but had been too blind—or too scared—to admit.

His fingers slid back into Checo’s damp hair, anchoring him, grounding them both in a moment that felt impossibly fragile and yet utterly unstoppable. Max wasn’t just kissing Checo—he was claiming this as his moment, a declaration that there was no going back now.

When he finally broke the kiss, it wasn’t because he wanted to. It was because the world around them started to filter back in. The champagne spray slowed to a stop, the roar of the team’s celebration becoming clearer.

Max pulled back just enough to look at Checo, his forehead resting lightly against his teammate’s. His chest heaved, not from exertion, but from the sheer intensity of the moment. Checo’s expression was unreadable, his cheeks flushed, his lips still slightly parted in shock. His eyes darted away, avoiding Max’s gaze, a stark contrast to the confident grin now spreading across Max’s face.

Max’s breath mingle with the faint mist of champagne that lingered in the cold air. His hands remained on Checo’s cheeks, thumbs brushing lightly against his skin as if reluctant to let go. Checo stood motionless, his expression a mixture of surprise and something deeper, harder to pin down.

The world around them resumed in bursts of sound and light—the cheers of the team, the popping of more champagne bottles, the flash of cameras capturing the remnants of the celebration. But for Max, it all felt distant. His focus was entirely on the man in front of him.

Checo’s gaze wavered. His hand instinctively moved to his lips, fingers brushing over them as though trying to process what had just happened. His eyes darted away, avoiding Max’s piercing blue stare. For once, it was Checo who seemed unsteady, his usual composed demeanor slipping under the weight of the moment.

Max’s lips curled into a faint smirk, a trace of satisfaction in his expression. Confidence radiated from him, the kind that came not just from his victory but from the certainty of his actions. The sticky champagne dripped from his hair and suit, but he didn’t care. He felt untouchable, invincible—not just as a champion but as a man who had finally acted on what he wanted.

Checo shifted slightly, as if he might step back, but Max’s presence held him in place. The younger driver’s intensity was magnetic, and even as Checo’s eyes flitted elsewhere, the heat of the moment lingered in the charged space between them.

Around them, the celebration continued, the rest of the team too caught up in their own revelry to notice the subtle tension that had shifted the atmosphere. But for Max, it didn’t matter. He knew what he wanted, and for the first time in years, he felt he was chasing something far more important than a trophy.

Checo froze, the world tilting as Max’s lips pressed against his. His laughter died on his tongue, replaced by a sharp intake of breath. For a split second, he didn’t process what was happening. The champagne was still falling around them, sticky and cold, but all he could feel was the heat of Max’s hands cradling his face, the firmness of his hold.

This wasn’t just playful banter. This wasn’t just a teammate pulling him into a celebratory hug. Max was kissing him.

His body stiffened instinctively, every nerve on high alert. His heart raced—not from excitement, but from confusion and a creeping sense of panic. His mind raced, trying to catch up to the moment, to understand why Max was doing this.

Why now? Why like this?

The warmth of Max’s hands against his skin was grounding and disorienting all at once. Checo’s first instinct was to pull away, to break free from the embrace that suddenly felt far too intimate. But Max’s grip was firm—not forceful, not rough, but resolute. He wasn’t letting Checo escape, and for some reason, Checo found himself unable to push him away.

His thoughts tumbled over each other in a chaotic jumble. He liked Max—of course he did. They were teammates, friends, even if their relationship had been strained at times. But this? This wasn’t friendship. This wasn’t the kind of bond he had ever expected or wanted to share with Max.

And yet, there was something in the way Max kissed him, something so raw and desperate that it made Checo hesitate. It wasn’t just a celebration for Max—it felt like a declaration, a moment years in the making.

Checo’s hands twitched at his sides, unsure whether to push Max away or pull him closer. He didn’t feel the same—not like this, not in the way Max so clearly did. And yet, he didn’t want to hurt him, didn’t want to ruin what had always been a fragile balance between them.

As Max deepened the kiss, his fingers sliding into Checo’s damp hair, Checo felt his breath hitch. The world seemed to press in on him, the weight of the moment heavy and inescapable. He didn’t know what to do, didn’t know how to respond. His heart told him to run, but his body betrayed him, staying frozen in place.

When Max finally pulled back, Checo’s cheeks were flushed, his lips tingling from the kiss. He didn’t dare meet Max’s eyes. He couldn’t.

His gaze dropped to the ground as he tried to steady his breathing, his mind racing with the implications of what had just happened. Max’s grin, wide and unshakable, was in sharp contrast to the confusion swirling in Checo’s chest. He didn’t know how to respond, didn’t know how to tell Max that he didn’t feel the same. Not here, not now, with their team surrounding them and cameras capturing every moment.

So he did the only thing he could think of. He stepped back, avoiding Max’s gaze, and let out a shaky laugh, forcing a smile that he knew didn’t reach his eyes.

“Congratulations, Max,” he said, his voice hollow even to his own ears.

And then, before Max could say anything more, Checo turned and walked away, leaving the roar of the celebration behind him.

Checo ducked into the nearest quiet corner of the paddock, the distant roar of his team’s celebrations still ringing in his ears. His hands trembled as he leaned against the cold wall, struggling to steady his breath. His lips - his whole mouth - still tingled from the kiss, the memory of Max’s firm but gentle hold lingering like an imprint he couldn’t shake.

What the hell just happened?

He pressed his palm to his mouth, as if trying to erase the sensation, but it was useless. It wasn’t just the kiss that rattled him—it was everything behind it. The intensity in Max’s eyes, the weight of his unspoken words, You’re mine now. Checo had always known Max could be single-minded, driven to the point of obsession. He had admired that trait on the track, even when it sometimes bordered on ruthlessness.

But this? This wasn’t admiration. This wasn’t professional respect or even friendly camaraderie. This was something else entirely, something Checo wasn’t ready for.

He ran a hand through his damp hair, still sticky with champagne. His mind flashed to Max’s face in that moment, the way he looked at Checo like he was the only person in the world that mattered. And for a brief, horrifying second, Checo had wanted to believe it.

But he couldn’t.

This wasn’t what he signed up for. His career was already a tightrope walk, balancing team politics, media scrutiny, and his own ambitions. There was no room for whatever this was, no room for Max’s emotions to complicate everything even further.

Checo straightened up, swallowing hard as he tried to collect himself. He couldn’t let this derail him. He couldn’t let Max’s actions—or his own conflicted feelings—affect their partnership. They were teammates, and that was all they could be.

Meanwhile, back in the celebration, Max’s grin hadn’t wavered. He moved through the team’s cheers and congratulations with an ease that came from years of victory. But his mind wasn’t on the champagne, the cameras, or even the championship itself.

It was on Checo.

The kiss replayed in his mind like a highlight reel, every second etched into his memory. The way Checo’s eyes had gone wide, the way he’d frozen at first, and then the faintest hint of softness Max thought he’d felt before pulling away. It had been everything Max didn’t know he wanted until he had it—and now, he wanted more.

He scanned the crowd, searching for Checo, but he was nowhere to be seen. His grin faltered for a moment before he caught himself. No. Checo could run, but Max wasn’t worried.

He had time.

Max was a lion, fresh off his fourth championship. He was at the peak of his power, his confidence unshakable. He knew what he wanted, and he knew how to get it. Checo might try to avoid him, might try to pretend nothing had happened, but Max wouldn’t let him.

He wanted Checo.

And Max Verstappen didn’t lose.

As Checo walked back toward the motorhome, he caught his reflection in a glass door. His smile was long gone, replaced by a frown he couldn’t hide. He had to face Max eventually, had to figure out what to say, but the thought made his chest tighten.

How was he supposed to navigate this? Max’s confidence was a force of nature, and Checo knew better than anyone how relentless he could be. Checo wasn’t ready for this fight—not when it was against someone who had always been more than just a teammate, someone who, despite everything, he cared about deeply.

And that was the problem, wasn’t it?

He cared too much.

Later that night, Checo sat alone in his hotel room, a half-empty bottle of water on the nightstand and the hum of the Las Vegas Strip buzzing faintly through the walls. He rubbed his temples, his mind still racing as he stared at his phone screen.

Max’s name blinked at the top of a fresh message thread.

Max: I meant what I did tonight. I’m in love with you, Checo. Always have been. Let’s talk. Please.

Checo’s stomach flipped. His thumb hovered over the reply button, but no words came. He wasn’t ready—not to respond, not to acknowledge, not to feel the weight of what Max had just confessed.

Before he could decide, his phone buzzed twice more.

Helmut: See you tomorrow at 9 AM sharp. Christian will be there too. We need to discuss your performance.
Christian: Meeting tomorrow morning. No excuses.

Checo’s hand fell limply to his side. He sank back against the headboard, exhaling sharply as the problem crystallized before him. His seat was at risk. He had felt it brewing for weeks—tense silences in meetings, vague comments from Helmut, the lack of support from Christian. Now, it was unavoidable.

But Max’s feelings… They were a lifeline, weren’t they? A solution to a problem that had no easy answers. He could push back against Red Bull’s politics, demand protection. Max was the golden boy, the untouchable star. If Max wanted him there, they’d have no choice but to listen.

Checo stared at the phone, the weight of it almost unbearable. Could he use Max like that? Could he risk breaking what little trust they’d built for the sake of his career?

His lips pressed into a thin line, his chest tightening as he realized the truth: he didn’t know if he could resist.

Checo’s fingers hovered over the keyboard, his thoughts a tangled mess of practicality and guilt. He read Max’s message again, his heart tugging against his better judgment. Max’s sincerity radiated off the screen, but Checo couldn’t shake the unease curling in his chest.

Finally, he typed:

Checo: Max, we need to talk. In private. Early morning.

The message felt too formal, too detached, but he couldn’t bring himself to add more. His thumb hesitated over the send button for a long, agonizing second before he tapped it.

The message delivered, the little "read" notification appeared almost immediately. Checo exhaled sharply, already dreading the response.

His phone buzzed seconds later.

Max: Finally. You won’t regret this.

Checo stared at the words, the weight of Max’s confidence settling on his shoulders like a heavy, unfamiliar cloak. He couldn’t decide if Max’s certainty was reassuring or terrifying. Either way, the wheels were now in motion, and there was no turning back.

Notes:

I squeezed in writing this while working on my thesis. This was supposed to be fluff, but I read an article about a meeting that will affect Checo's career, so it ended up like this instead, hahaha.

I'll be posting my favorite project tomorrow. I've spent a long time writing it; I probably started it around the same time I began my oneshot fics. It's a Checo-focused fanfic.

Thank you for reading and commenting! I'll reply to all the comments tomorrow since I don't have work or academic activities then.
