Prequel
Charles Leclerc was 12 when he went to a wedding. This was the first time he had ever been to a wedding. His uncles were the ones taking him and him only, both his brothers were stuck at home, finishing their school work. Perks of being an overachiever. His parents had bought him a suit which fitted him perfectly, except for the tie which was too big for him, and warned him to stay put and not cause any trouble at the wedding. Since it was his first time acting like an ‘adult’ he took this task very seriously.
Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, two of his uncle’s friends were getting married. The venue they selected was beautiful, it was a vineyard in south of France and the building was no less than a palace. The halls were decorated with white roses and bows. There was a beautiful arch decorated with more white roses where the ceremony was going to take place. The aisle was decorated with candles on either side. Tables were designated to each guest. Charles sat between his uncle, Sebastian and his husband, Kimi. There was chatter all around the room, the ceremony yet to begin.
”How long until the ceremony starts, uncle Seb?” Charles asks, already bored by waiting around.
”Have patience, Charlie.” Seb says, patting Charles’ head. “These things take time. Everything has to be perfect. Just like with your school work.”
Charles nods understandably. Everything needs to be perfect. “Can I go to the washroom then?” He asks politely.
”I will come with you.” Kimi offers, standing up with him.
“No, no, Uncle Kimi, I can go by myself. I am big boy now.” He says shaking his head at Kimi.
”Are you sure, bud?” Kimi asks, raising an eyebrow. Charles nods eagerly. “Ok then off you go. Don’t get lost. Take care of yourself and return back here once you’re done.” Kimi says out all the instructions quickly and Charles nods and leave.
Once he was done using the washroom. He washes his hands and prepares to go back to the table. On his way back he sees the wedding carters setting up the table. His curiosity got him and he slowly strolled over to the table. He sees some popsicle and he couldn’t resist, he grabs one and run away into the nearest room. He hides behind a cupboard and enjoys his popsicle. He is about halfway done when the door opens and a man rushes in screaming profanities, unaware that Charles is in the room. Charles slowly gets up, throws away the rest of the ice cream into the bin, wipes his mouth with a tissue and finally faces the man.
“Oh no, Charles. I am so sorry. I didn’t know you were in here.” Lewis apologises but his tone still remains stressed.
”Is something wrong, Lewis?” Charles asks, moving towards him.
”Oh, I spilled ketchup on my tie and now it’s all dirty and the weddings about to start. Nico is going to kill me if I don’t show up on time.” He says, his tone laced with stress and anxiety.
Charles thinks for a moment and then looks down at his tie, it’s huge almost the some size as his dad’s. Then a wonderful idea comes to him. “Why don’t you take my tie? It’s too big on me, it will fit you perfectly.”
“I don’t know, Charles…” Lewis says, a bit unsure.
”I think it will solve the current issue at hand and also help you get ‘something borrowed’ and ‘something blue’” He says pointing at his navy blue tie. “At least try it on if it doesn’t work, we can figure something else out.” he says taking off his tie.
Lewis takes his tie and puts it on, one look in mirror and he smiles. “This is perfect, Charles. It goes with my suit and it also ticks the boxes of tradition.” Lewis says, smiling at Charles. “Thank you so much, Charles. You are a genius.” Charles grins at him. “Since you helped me out, it’s only fitting that you should be a part of this big day. How about you become the ring holder?”
That day Charles was the ring holder and he was a hero in both the grooms’ eyes. From that day on, it was like Charles found his calling. As if he knew what he does the best and that was being a best man. Since that day Charles has been a best man in 25 weddings, yes folks you heard that right, 25 weddings and counting. Although he was a fashion editor, his real jobs was to be a best man. All his life he had been one and now he wanted somebody to be one for him…
