Work Text:
Lucy is in the kitchen with Charlotte strapped to her chest when she hears a loud bang. Almost like something hit the house and then there’s a knock on the door. Lucy moves slowly to the front of the house, a hand on Charlotte’s back.
The hairs on the back of her neck were standing up, and she could just sense something was wrong.
And her priority here was Charlotte and keeping her safe. “Hands up and turn around.” Says a voice behind her. Lucy freezes, and turns around to see a man pointing a gun at her.
Lucy swallows and puts her hands up in the air, thanking the lord Tim carried Charlotte around since she was a newborn. The baby was a heavy sleeper and didn’t even lift her head.
“What do you want?” Lucy asks. The man shakes the gun at her, and then she feels a gun at her back.
“Do what we say and you will live.” The first man says. Lucy swallows as the man behind her pushes her forward. She glances at the back door and sees its wide open.
Of course.
The back gate.
“Take whatever you want.” Lucy says. “Just take it and go.” The man pushes her forward and sits her down on the couch while they pace in front of Lucy.
“What do you want?” Lucy asks again.
“Money. Jewelry. Anything we can make money off of.” The second man says. Lucy nods and rubs Charlotte’s back.
“Take it.” She says. “Just leave me and my daughter alone.” The men ignore her, and she watches them closely. Her phone is in her pocket, and it feels heavy. She just needs to get a message to someone.
Someone at the station.
Tim.
Anyone.
She knows Tim would be here in a heartbeat if he knew what was happening. He wouldn’t even hesitate.
The men continue pacing in front of her. And she has a feeling something else is going on. These men are running from something.
She swallows hard, and keeps her hand on Charlotte’s back. She reaches into her back pocket, and pulls her phone out.
Tim is luckily the last person she texted and she keeps her eyes on the men as she types her message, she hopes Tim gets it. She hopes by some luck she actually types it.
Lucy: 911
***
Tim is just finishing some paperwork when his phone buzzes. He frowns but picks it up, and stands up almost knocking over the chair when he reads it. It’s from Lucy and all it says is 911.
He presses her name and holds the phone up to his ear as he hurries out of his office.
“Tim!” A voice yells but Tim keeps walking, his heart pounding as he wills Lucy to answer.
“Pick up. Pick up.” He mutters but it goes to voicemail.
Damnit
“Tim!” Some pulls his arm to a stop and he looks up to see Angela looking at him.
“What?” He snaps because he doesn’t have time for this. He needs to get ahold of Lucy or get to Lucy. She’s at home alone with the baby and she texted him 911–
“Are you okay?” Angela asks. Tim shakes his head, yanking his arm free.
“Lucy texted me 911.” He says. Angela’s face changes instantly from concerned to fearful.
“There was a break in.” She says. Tim feels his heart pound even harder. “At a house in your neighborhood.”
“Lucy.” He mutters. He presses her name again and holds the phone up to his ear, willing her to answer.
“It’s not your house Tim.” Angela says. “There are patrol cars going there right now.”
“She’s not answering.” Tim says. “Something is wrong Angela.” He has all these scenarios running through his head, all these thoughts.
What if Lucy was out walking Kojo?
What if she saw something?
What if—
Angela seems to be thinking the same thing because she tugs on his arm and they are moving again. She goes to her car, and he goes to his truck and he’s peeling out of the garage with out a second thought.

Tim beats Angela to the house, and he feels the hair on the back of his neck stand up. The front door was closed, but when he gets out of the truck he sees the back gate is wide open.
Damnit.
The lock had broken about a month ago and he never got around to fixing it. He sees Angela pull up, and he has his hand on his gun.
“Tim.” Angela says.
“My wife and daughter are in there.” He snaps at her. Angela puts a hand on his shoulder as if calming him down.
Tim goes through the gate with Angela behind him. He tiptoes in the backyard, and his heart drops when he sees Lucy on the couch. Two men are pacing in front of her.
“Two men.” He whispers to Angela. “Lucy is on the couch.” Angela nods and goes in front of him.
He knows they need to be careful, he doesn’t know what these men have planned.
“Lucy has Charlotte.” Angela whispers to him. Tim nods and follows Angela inside. Lucy sees them first, and Tim puts his gun on one of the men’s backs shoving him to the ground. Angela takes down the other man.
“Idiots.” Angela mutters. Tim snorts but pushes the man down and puts his hands behind his back and slaps the handcuffs on him.
He stands up, and then rushes over to Lucy bending down in front of her. “You came.” She mutters. He nods feeling the adrenaline still rushing through his body. “Of course I did.” He says. “I will always come.”
He kisses the top of Lucy’s head and then she shakily pulls Charlotte out of the carrier. Tim takes the baby from her pressing a kiss to her head too.
Lucy sinks down into the sofa, and Tim immediately pulls Lucy to him. He rocks Charlotte and holds onto Lucy, wanting to make this better but not knowing how.
“It’s okay.” He mutters. “You are okay Luce.” Her body shakes against him, and he knows it’s what just happened catching up with her. He doesn’t blame her at all, this was not a situation he would wish on anyone.
“I didn’t—I couldn’t do anything.” Lucy sobs. “Charlotte—”
“You did good baby.” Tim whispers. “You kept her safe. You alerted me. You did what you had to do Lucy.”
Lucy doesn’t say anything, just buries her face in Tim’s chest. He’s still just holds her, knowing that’s what she needs.
“I need to give my statement.” She mutters. Tim sighs and rubs her back as Angela comes over.
“Don’t worry about that Lucy.” Tim says looking up at Angela who gives him a slight nod. He stands up and carries Charlotte over to the swing. He fixes her up, and then heads back over to Lucy and Angela.
Lucy is telling Angela what happened, and Tim’s face stomach drops as he hears what happened.
“There was another break in down the street.” Angela says and looks up at Tim looking hesitant. “Someone was killed. We think they ran here to get away.”
Tim sits down next to Lucy, and he pulls her close. It could have been so much worse, these men were unhinged and could have easily hurt Charlotte and Lucy.
“Oh my god.” Lucy mumbles and she stands up and picks Charlotte up. Tim watches them closely, and then turns back to Angela.
“I will get everyone out of your hair.” Angela says. “You just need to be with Lucy and Charlotte.” Tim nods as Lucy comes back over and sits down next to Tim.
“Thanks Angela.” Tim says. She nods at him, and he watches her go. Soon the house is quiet, and he pulls Lucy into a hug.
“I’m glad you are okay.” He mutters into her ear. “I love you.”
“I love you too.”

Later that night, as they lay in bed Lucy can’t help but think how lucky she is. How lucky she was to be able to get that message out or—she might not be here right now.
“I can hear you thinking.” Tim mutters. “You did everything right Lucy. You kept Charlotte safe.”
“I know.”
“I’m proud of you baby.” He says. “I’m sorry this happened to you. But you did good.”
“Thank you for coming.” She says although she knows he would have come no matter what.
“I will always come, I will always find you Lucy.” Tim says. “Always.”
“I know.” She mutters. She glances over at where Charlotte is, she’s fast asleep in her bassinet.
“I just—it was scary and I know I can handle that but—”
“You are a badass Luce.” Tim says. “You are a great mother, and cop. You protected our daughter, and yourself. That’s all that matters.”
Lucy nods and cuddles up into him more, and he kisses the top of her head. “I’m going to put one of those ring cameras up.” He says. “And maybe a extra lock.” Lucy lets out a small laugh, she has no doubt their house would be extra protected after this.
“Thank you for being our fierce protector.” She says. She feels another kiss to the top of her head.
“Always Lucy.” He says. “Always.”
