Haejoon

Okay

Although he had tried to cope with his mother’s death, Haejoon still wasn’t willing to go out on Thanksgiving. His initial plan remained the same as the previous year: staying in his room all day, hoping the day would pass quickly. However, this plan failed when he had to wander around looking for Eunyung. And once again, his plans changed. While Haejoon lay in bed lamenting his fate, the image of Eunyung sitting alone in the dorm popped into his head. Grabbing his phone, he texted the blond-haired boy to ask where he was. Twenty minutes, Haejoon thought—just enough time to buy groceries and cook while waiting for Eunyung to return. He grabbed his jacket and headed out.

But what exactly was Haejoon expecting from Eunyung? An hour had passed, and there was still no sign of him. The food Haejoon had prepared was no longer warm. Frustrated, he got up from his seat, intending to calm his irritation by getting some fresh air. Just as he opened the door, Eunyung appeared, carrying numerous shopping bags.

“Oh. You’re here already?”

Haejoon gave him a blank stare before flicking his junior’s forehead. “Ouch!”

Crossing his arms, Haejoon frowned. “You said twenty minutes, but I’ve been here waiting like an idiot for a whole hour.”

Looking confused, Eunyung replied, “But Haejoon, you’re smart. How would you even know what being an idiot feels like?”

Fair point. Haejoon decided not to respond and instead went back inside, followed by Eunyung trailing behind. “So, why the sudden urge to meet up?” Eunyung asked as he placed the bags full of food on the table and grabbed some plates and utensils to serve it.

Haejoon paused, contemplating the right answer to Eunyung’s question. Saying it was out of pity for seeing Eunyung alone felt accurate, but he pitied himself too. Perhaps that was the reason. He visited Eunyung so that the loneliness wouldn’t hurt as much when shared with someone else.

“I don’t know. Maybe I just felt bad about you being alone in the dorm.”

“Hah, just admit that you were lonely yourself and came looking for me, huh?”

“I guess I was. Last year, I was the one who invited you to eat together during Chuseok, remember?”

Eunyung froze at Haejoon’s reply, feeling a slight warmth spread across his cheeks. He hadn’t expected Haejoon to remember. Not that he was eagerly waiting for this day—he just felt a little excited…? Especially with his favorite dish, mini patties, now on the table.

“Wow, you remember that so well.”

“Heh, right back at you.”

Haejoon pulled out more food from the bags, revealing pumpkin pancakes, bean sprouts, and songpyeon. Eunyung turned his gaze away, mumbling with a mouth full of food, “Pure coincidence.”

Haejoon smiled as he enjoyed his meal. Celebrating a second Thanksgiving without his mother didn’t seem so bad after all.
