Work Text:

Ezran paid attention to his brother as he traced quick lines on his sketchbook.

“She’s beautiful,” he said, his breath catching a little.

Callum smirked “She was beautiful,” he agreed.

“I can’t believe she’s my mother,” Ez muttered.

He felt Callum’s knee move more quickly, and the arm he had around his middle securing him from falling tightened.

“She would be proud of you,” said his brother.

Ezran wanted to ask why. In his five, almost six years he hadn’t done anything too stunning like the rest of his family.

Perhaps Sarai would be actually proud of him when he ruled their kingdom. But not now that all he could do was talk with the insect he found in the garden.

Maybe when he was king he could give them shelter and food, like his father did with some people during winter.

“Whatever,” said Callum, urging him to hop off his leg “I have lessons with Opeli.”

He closed his notebook and left it on his bed.

“See you later.”

He closed the door and the noise made Ezran cringe.

Biting his lip, he opened the notebook again. Luckily, his mother’s drawing was on the page, not in the other drawings Callum had done about Claudia.

Ezran sighed.

If only he could remember their mother then maybe he’d be able to understand Callum and offer a better comfort.

Nevertheless, the woman with bangs and a kind smile on the page was foreign, the only thing he knew about her was that his brother told him and the occasional comments Harrow made about what a great queen and mother she was. Her heart full of love was her legacy.

It’s too bad Ezran doesn’t remember ever experiencing that love himself, not only through other people’s words.

Which wasn’t much either. Callum’s stories were short, since every time he started to remember all too well his voice cracked and tears trailed down his cheeks.

Queen Sarai was part of his family, and in some insane, weird way he missed her.

It was a dull feeling almost always at the back of his heart, a soft aching he learned to live with since he had memory, a missing piece that would never be found.

But he was fine… he still had Callum and his dad. Maybe it was because he never knew anything else, but having them was enough.
