Between Shadows and Starlight

Summary:

In a quiet city café, 22-year-old Hector is a regular customer, finding solace in his daily routine of ordering coffee after long, lonely days. The coffee shop's warmth provides him a brief respite from the busy world outside. There, he encounters Halen, a 24-year-old barista who seems to stand out from the crowd. With his calm demeanor and a subtle intensity, Halen carries a quiet energy that Hector can't help but notice.

What begins as casual exchanges at the counter-small talk over lattes and cappuccinos-slowly turns into something more. Halen, who usually keeps his distance from customers, finds himself drawn to Hector's curiosity and gentle persistence. Their connection deepens over weeks of quiet moments, shared glances, and conversations about life, dreams, and the weight of unspoken struggles.

But as Hector and Halen grow closer, Hector begins to realize there's more to Halen than meets the eye. Behind his calm exterior, Halen is grappling with a painful past that makes him hesitant to trust anyone. As they begin to open up to each other, the question lingers: can Hector's warmth and steady presence be enough to help Halen step out of the shadows of his past?

Chapter 1: Little Sis

Chapter Text

(Hector POV)

["Jack.. It's like I don't even know you anymore.."]

The romance movie played on the TV in my apartment. My eyes are glued to the screen as I eat the strawberry poptart in my hand. Suddenly, there's a knock on my apartment door.

Right. I had plans today.

I quickly got up and made my way over to the door, opening it to see none other than my little sister.

"Big brother!" She shouts excitedly, closing her arms around me like a hydraulic press.

"Ow- Rema, I can't breathe-!" I managed to squeak out, her grip on me loosening when she processed my words.

"Oh. Sorry!" She'd exclaim with a nervous smile. "It's just been so long, I couldn't help myself."

"Wanna go out for a little while?"
