“Blaise, why would anyone think this open mic business is fun?” Draco shot his friend an incredulous look. “And where in Merlin’s name are you expecting us to be able to even have a party like this?” Blaise Zabini, however, remained as stoic as ever while his friend worked through this plan.
Draco growled in irritation and raked a hand through his blonde hair as he began pacing the room. “Seriously mate. This whole idea sounds absolutely bonkers. What is so fun about letting someone get up and more than likely embarrass themselves in front of a group of however many people? I can understand that us at 13 would’ve found that highly enjoyable – but seeing as we are no longer 13, I much rather find myself enjoying the aspect of finally getting out of this sodding school and starting my own life, thank you very much.” At the end of his speech, Draco whirled around and looked expectantly at Blaise.
“Drake, I’ve talked to all the Prefects and Heads of Houses. Being Head Boy, you were my last stop. I did this specifically because I knew you would act like this.” Blaise ran a hand down his face in exasperation as he looked at his best friend.
“Now, to start with, it wasn’t even my idea. That honor belongs to your beloved Head Girl.” The dark skinned man sat down elegantly on the couch with a smirk, crossing one ankle over the knee and resting one arm along the back as Draco snorted at the revelation. Of course it was Granger’s bloody idea. And of course that meant it was absolutely going to be done.
With a huff, Draco grabbed his wand and floated a bottle of Firewhiskey and two glasses from the kitchen area to the coffee table as he sat down across from Blaise. “I don’t understand how you and Granger became best friends. That girl drives me absolutely mad.” Taking a sip from his glass, his eyes roamed to the fireplace.
Blaise sipped his glass and studied his friend. “She isn’t all that bad, honestly. I don’t think we ever would’ve talked more than basic civility if it weren’t for McGonagall pairing us up for this Transfiguration project.”
Draco glanced at his friend. “Whatever you say, mate. You don’t have to live with her.” He downed the rest of his glass and stood up, vanishing away the mess he had made working on an Arithmancy assignment. Blaise took note and vanished his glass as he stood up.
As he reached the door, Blaise cleared his throat and looked at his best friend once more. “This is just a way to have everyone together one last time. It’s been a hard year for everyone. People have been unlearning and relearning all over the castle. They deserve to have a way to get those feelings out and leave them here so the future we all thought was impossible can actually be free of all the negativity.”
Draco stood near the fireplace, eyes trained on the red dancing flames. Blaise was right, of course. He could admit that with no problem. The main reason he opposed the idea so much was simply because it was Granger’s brain child. He didn’t see how anything like that could be a place he saw as comforting because of how much of a stickler the little witch was. Vulnerability was never her strong suit. With a sigh, he retreated into his bedroom, sleep claiming him before his head even hit his pillow.

Hermione Granger woke before breakfast with excitement coursing through her. The event she had planned the night of the end of term feast for the seventh and eighth years had been unanimously approved and applauded. She was also pleasantly surprised with how much help Blaise Zabini had been in getting everything from her head into a neat organized presentation. She smiled to herself as she grabbed her bookbag from her chair and wandered into the Heads common room to make tea and read the Prophet.
Eighth year looked far different than she thought it would. Harry and Ron had opted to go straight into Auror training after cleanup from the War had been finished. Ginny was a Prefect, but was so busy with Quidditch the two never got to hang out together outside of meetings and meals. Hermione’s workload was one that everyone expected of her, and it would open up so many doors career wise after she was finished at Hogwarts.
As she sat at the little table near the kitchen counter, Hermione saw movement from the corner of her eye. Stifling a groan, she sipped her tea and continued reading Rita Skeeter’s latest article about Harry and Ron’s training, love lives, and friendship betrayal while ignoring the sudden imposing presence of her blonde counterpart. Her brown eyes moved warily to him, waiting for the snide remark he never failed to deliver as a hand came to smooth down her hair. In the same instance, Draco’s grey eyes connected to hers and Hermione froze, unsure of what to say.
“Erm, good morning Malf-” clearing her throat, she shook her head. “Draco. Good morning Draco.” She nodded and offered a small half smile as she finished her tea off. Hermione glanced at her watch and stood up with a start. “Oh no, I’m late. Have a good day!” She grabbed her bookbag and waved her wand, sending her teacup to the sink before dashing off out the door. What she didn’t see in her hurry out the door was the look on Draco’s face morph from surprise to a small smile as he finished his morning routine before classes.

“Hey Drakey!” Theo Nott bellowed as Malfoy walked to the Slytherin table in the Great Hall. Draco glared at Theo, the disdain for the nickname evident in his grey eyes. Theo however just ran a hand through his curly brown hair and grinned as the blonde sat down. “What’s got your wand in a knot this morning?”
Draco sighed and leaned forward on the table, resting his chin in his hand. “Granger, that’s what. That bloody woman can’t decide how she wants to act.” He scoffed and grabbed a piece of toast from Theo’s plate. “One minute she’s acting like she hates me then the next minute she gets flustered because of some deadline and all pretenses fly out the window.”
Theo let out a laugh as Draco took a bite of toast, causing the signature Malfoy sneer to appear. “Sorry mate, you just sound like a little school girl confused because a boy can’t decide how he feels about her.” Another chuckle came from behind Draco, and he turned around to see Blaise with a smirk on his face. Narrowing his eyes, Draco grabbed a goblet of pumpkin juice and took a drink.
“Drake mate, you do. I think you’re having mixed feelings about a certain swotty little lion.” Blaise raised an eyebrow, daring Draco to challenge his statement. His blonde friend was chewing on another bite of toast, and quietly seething.
With another drink of pumpkin juice, Draco fixed his gaze on Blaise. “Zabini, for the love of Merlin please drop that line of thinking. I do not have mixed feelings for Granger. I just do not know what goes on in that blasted woman’s head.” he let out a huff as Theo and Blaise shared a look. Finishing his toast, Draco grabbed his bag and stood from the table. “You two gits have a wonderful day.” With a final sneer, he stalked out of the Great Hall.

As he walked to class, Draco found himself mulling over what Theo and Blaise had said. As much as he loathed to admit it, his friends were right. He was having mixed feelings about Granger, and it was something he wasn’t exactly thrilled about. The witch had managed to make him question everything he’d learned since he met her 7 years ago. She was muggle born and bested him in life at every turn. It was something he hadn’t expected from her when he first met her on the train. Draco couldn’t help but smile a little at the memory. Granger had carried herself with such an air of superiority that 11 year old him couldn’t help but be impressed and 18 year old him couldn’t help but have that same feeling after watching her over time.
However, she was no longer acting like they had ever been enemies. But neither was she acting like they were friends, despite her friendly nature in the Heads common room and other moments they were around each other. Perhaps Granger was just being cordial? She did testify at his trial, after all. It was all on a factual basis, a product of his environment, didn’t sell her and the two dolts she calls best friends out, he didn’t actually kill Dumbledore. Draco didn’t think he deserved her standing up for him, but was thankful nonetheless. Her and Potter speaking at his mother’s trial kept her from going to Azkaban, and he didn’t want her to go through seeing her only son in prison too. Her speaking up for him kept him from prison, but forced him to return to school. Now he was almost done with the year, and he still hadn’t been able to crack the code that is Granger.
With an irritated huff, Draco made his way into the Arithmancy classroom. He needed to do something to get the infuriatingly mesmerizing witch out of his head. As he pulled out his parchment and quill, a piece of paper floated onto his desk. Opening it, he let out a groan and dropped his head to his desk.
Draco,
Meet me in the Heads common room before dinner. We have to talk about plans for open mic night before the Prefect meeting tomorrow.
-H
Well bollocks, there goes my evening plan of getting her out of my head. Draco thought. Thankfully, others started pouring in the classroom, allowing him to shut off his brain for an hour.

April 28, 1999
Hermione awoke with a headache. The meeting the night before had been productive, but overwhelming. Everyone was excited, and she of course was happy about that. But it was hard to pretend she was as excited. Part of her was, but she had no idea what she was going to do for the event. The others had already signed up with what they were doing save for a Gryffindor and Hufflepuff Prefect, along with herself and Draco. The goal was to get the Heads and Prefects signed up first before putting copies up in the common rooms, and they had until tonight to get it done. With a frustrated groan, she rolled out of bed and out to the common room.
What she didn’t expect however, was to see Draco Malfoy in nothing but a towel walking back to his room. She also didn’t realize how close she was to the couch until she ended up staring at the floor with the back of it digging into her hips. Hermione felt her face immediately heat with embarrassment as she heard Draco come up behind her. She groaned internally and started struggling to get up. This was not the situation she wanted to end up in, and would be promptly returning to bed after taking a dreamless sleep draught. Before she could make an attempt to right herself, Hermione heard a low, chuckle from behind her, causing the heat in her face to spread to her neck.
“Well Granger. Fancy meeting you here.” Draco couldn’t help the smirk that appeared on his face. He could be more open with his expressions and stance since she couldn’t see him. He leaned forward, placing his hands on either side of her, thumbs barely touching her hips. This was definitely not the smartest plan Draco had executed, but he had to do something to fluster the little witch, to get a different reaction out of her than civility. He needed to see her fire, even if it was directed at him.
Hermione sputtered as she felt Draco behind her. What was the blonde git doing? Surely he wasn’t going to take advantage of her? No, she chided herself, he wouldn’t. Feeling more resolved now that she had kept herself spiraling down that rabbit hole of thoughts, the brunette started trying to figure out a way to get up without feeding too much into whatever Malfoy’s play was. She kept her movements still and breaths shallow.
Draco chuckled again. “I must say, Granger, you look quite lovely in this position.” His voice held a tone of admiration, and his chest and trousers constricted ever so slightly. Blaise and Theo would have a field day if they could see him now. He was sure his face gave away every innate desire and want in this moment, and he was grateful she couldn’t see his face. Granger wouldn’t know what to do with him innocently admiring her. Was he going to be overtly suggestive in word choice? Absolutely. Was it to cover up any lingering feelings the blonde heir didn't know how to disguise? Abraxas Malfoy was rolling in his grave at the thought of his only grandson pining after a Muggle Born witch. Lucius, thought still alive in Azkaban, would send them both to shallow graves.
He felt Granger tense as his thumbs barely brushed her hips. The immediate reaction from her caused his stomach to do a flip, and he bit back an intake of breath. “Careful, witch. Someone might think you want more if you keep tensing at the slightest touch.” Draco felt the work behind keeping the strain out of his voice. This was going to fuel his dreams for the rest of term. His silver grey eyes roamed over her, wanting to burn this image to memory, despite how innocent it was in nature. It was undoubtedly the only way he’d be able to see the little witch like this.
With a resigned sigh, Draco pushed himself back, and grabbed Granger’s upper arms. She gave a small squeak as he lifted her off the couch, making sure was stable on both teeth before releasing his grip on her. “All joking aside Granger, are you alright? That looked more uncomfortable than Blast-Ended Skrewt burns.” He shoved his hands in his pockets, silver eyes glancing at the clock on the mantle. Classes were going to start soon.
Hermione glared at him as she adjusted her uniform and pushed her curls out of her face. With a huff she crossed her arms over her chest and raised an eyebrow. “Just what do you think you are doing, Malfoy? What in Merlin’s name makes you believe you have the right to act like that?”
Draco quickly averted his eyes to the floor as she went on her small rant. He couldn’t help the warm feeling that flooded his chest as he heard the authoritarian tone in her voice and bit the inside of his cheek to keep from smirking or worse, laughing. Salazar knew she’d light into him even worse. Not that he’d complain, of course. It was something he missed hearing from the curly haired woman. Her ire was the foundation of whatever relationship they had, and since she had begun being more civil, he hadn’t been able to stop thinking about her. Draco realized he needed to say something before her hair extended out even further from her head. “It was just a poor taste joke, Granger. I’m perfectly harmless.” He held his hands up in a surrender fashion, and Hermione rolled her eyes and scoffed.
“Malfoy.” Hermione’s tone had gotten lower and held a warning that had Draco’s heart skipping a beat. Salazar’s balls he needed to get a grip. And have a nice long talk with Blaise and Theo for putting these thoughts in his head. Well, he could admit they didn’t exactly put them in his head, but rather bring them more to the forefront of his mind.
“I’m serious. You’ve seemed rather distracted and haven’t been acting yourself this year. I just wanted to make sure you didn’t forget who you truly are.” Draco wanted to Obliviate himself as soon as the words left his mouth. He closed his eyes and held back a grimace just as Hermione’s twisted into surprise. “Right then,” he cleared his throat, “Now that you seem to finally remember you’re Hermione Granger, Brightest Witch of Our Age, I shall take my leave. Enjoy the rest of your day.”
Hermione watched in shock as Malfoy stalked out of their shared Common Room. As she glanced back toward the couch, she felt a familiar fire pool in her stomach. With resounding determination, she nodded her head before turning and marching out the same way Draco had.

“I’m going to Avada the both of you one of these days. No warning. No sign of me before it happens. Just one moment you will each cease to exist. And will not blink an eye when I do so.” Draco was pacing around the Heads common room while Theo and Blaise sat on the couch, eyeing him with amusement as they sipped on their Firewhiskey. Both boys glanced at each other and burst out laughing as Draco stopped and glared at them for the hundredth time in five minutes.
“Drake, relax mate. If she didn’t hex your balls off in the moment, I think you’re safe.” Blaise supplied, trying to calm his blonde friend down before a hole was worn in the carpet and they all ended up at the wrath of one Hermione Granger. “Besides, I think whatever it was you said to her actually helped. I can’t quite figure it out, but something in her changed.” The dark skinned boy shrugged and leaned back, crossing one ankle over his knee.
At this, Draco stopped and ran a hand through his hair, letting out a growl of frustration. “That isn’t the point, dunderhead!” He turned his eyes to Blaise, sneering when the boy shrunk down into the cushions. “I crossed a line. It doesn’t matter what my intentions were or were not at that point. She was absolutely furious at me, and rightfully so. I don’t know what this is so important anyway, it isn’t like whatever it is I feel for her is returned. And even if it was, there’s no possible way anything could come of it. She’s a war heroine. I’m a former Death Eater. She’s the brightest witch of our age. I’m my father’s prodigy. She’s good. I am not. Things will never come easy for me, which is fine because I absolutely will fight like hell to keep my family’s name in a positive light. She doesn’t deserve that. Merlin knows that woman has fought enough battles for other people. Granger…” he trailed off, biting the inside of his cheek. This conversation was as pointless as his feelings.
Theo sighed and leaned forward, placing his knees on his elbows as he eyed the Malfoy heir. “Draco, we get it. The whole Romeo and Juliet ill-fated story bullshite. You’ve fed us that same load of bollocks since Fourth Year after the Yule Ball. And don’t you dare try to backtrack and act like I’m bloody insane. You’re just lucky Pans didn’t see the look on your face when Granger walked in on Krum’s arm. Whether you like it or not, your brain is too far gone. And you’re going to end up like Moaning fucking Myrtle if you don’t do something about it. Maybe something other than trapping her in a deliciously fuckable position next time?” He watched Draco carefully, trying to discern his friend’s mood.
As Theo finished his speech, Draco plopped down in front of the fireplace, leaning back against the couch. What is this, gang up on Draco day? He rolled his eyes and leaned his head back on a cushion, closing his eyes in resignation. His friends were right of course. He just didn’t have to admit it. At least not yet. Admitting it to himself was one thing, admitting it to his two meddling best mates was a totally different thing. It made it too real. At least keeping it inside made it his, and he could control that. But now that he knew that their interaction two days prior had sparked a change in the witch, Draco could feel the pull to push her more. He thought back to the ire on Granger’s face. It was radiant. It made her glow, and her honey eyes only made the glow brighter. With a groan, he laid down on the floor, sloshed and begging sleep to overtake him as his friends left him alone.

April 30, 1999
It was time. Today was the last day for sign ups for Open Mic Night. Hermione had been debating for months on what to do. A lot of that indecisiveness came from her not being confident in herself. But somehow, the uncalled for interaction between her and Draco had brought a part of her back to the surface. It had only been 2 days, but she felt more like her old self – her assignments were bringing her joy again, she was beginning to lose herself in the excitement of the quickly approaching end of term. And most importantly, at least in her opinion, she was beginning to be okay with how things had gone after the end of the war. Harry and Ron had been doing amazing in the Auror Department, and because of her own insecurities regarding the future, Hermione hadn’t been as supportive as she should’ve been.
She walked toward the sign up list in the common room with a renewed sense of determination. It was time to reclaim things that brought her joy. A small smile graced her features as she picked up the quill to sign her name. A feeling of contentedness washed over her as Hermione as she glanced over her decision. She was excited to show a part of herself that was unknown to even Harry and Ron. It was time, she decided, to bring a new part of herself to her Hogwarts journey, one that she cemented on her own, without Harry and Ron somehow overshadowing it.
Lost in thought, Hermione didn’t even realize Draco had come up behind her and slammed directly into his chest. It didn’t fully process that she had embarrassed herself again in front of him until she felt his arms come around her. Her hands grabbed the front of his shirt before she could stop herself. Hermione let her head rest on his shoulder for a few moments before she let out a frustrated huff.
“Granger, we really have to stop meeting like this.” Draco drawled. He carefully disentangled them and stepped back. Glancing behind her, he saw that she had finally added her name to the list. “Surprise, eh? Wouldn’t expect anything less from the Gryffindor Princess.” Smirking, he stepped around her to add his name to the list along with singing on his time slot.
Hermione didn’t have it in her to glare. Her nerves were too present and active in her body. She tilted her head curiously when she saw what he wrote, her brown curls sweeping gently to one side. “Singing? That’s interesting.” And with that, Hermione walked out the room. Once again, she left a confused but slightly happier Draco behind her.

The lists had been posted in all the common rooms. The castle was buzzing with all the excitement. Due to the interest volume, Hermione, Draco and the other Prefects decided to change the event from one night to the whole last week – the seventh and eighth years ending the week after the feast. Hermione had been shocked at Draco’s suggestion, but once seeing the fact each common room had ended up with three extra sheets of parchment with signups, she had readily agreed. Thankfully she and Draco hadn’t had any other embarrassing run-ins, but given their track record, she knew it would be coming soon.
The library was unusually full, with several eighth years finishing up projects and others getting ahead of studying for end of year exams. As Hermione glanced around, she spotted Blaise sitting with Theo. With a silent thanks to Merlin for giving her a studious project partner, she strolled over to the table and sat down. “Morning Blaise, Theo.” She smiled slightly at them as she pulled out her part of the Transfiguration assignment. “Theo, how’s your assignment coming? You’ve got a project in Ancient Runes, yeah?”
The brunette Slytherin coughed as he sipped his (unapproved) pumpkin juice. Hermione narrowed her eyes at the goblet and he quickly vanished it after he caught his breath. “Er, yeah. Sorry about the drink, Hermione, I was running late to breakfast. Some blonde git came in and – OW. What the fuck Blaise?!” Theo’s eyes turned to Blaise as Hermione felt the table shift.
“Sorry mate, my foot slipped.” Blaise shrugged and turned back to his work. Theo rubbed his leg under the table and stuck his tongue out at Blaise before turning back to Hermione. “Anyway. Yes, my project is in Runes. It’s not terribly difficult, but it is tedious and I’m ready to be done with it.” He nodded resolutely.
“Well, you are top of the class. I expect you’ll be fine and your project will be used to show other students how to not only translate but also apply them.” Hermione shot him a small smile and pulled her hair up in a bun, sticking a spare quill in to hold it in place. She turned to face Blaise, but came face to face with Draco. Her mouth fell open and she let out a small squeak. “For Godric’s sake Malfoy. You scared me half to death!”
“Sorry Granger. Perhaps you should pay better attention to your surroundings and not focus on complementing arseholes like Theo.” Hermione furrowed her eyebrows, confused at the tone he used. It wasn’t something she’d heard from the blonde in years. She glanced furtively at Theo, and she saw the brunette shrinking back in his chair. Blaise was coming from the stacks near the Transfiguration aisle and stopped midstep, watching the scene unfold.
“Excuse me for thinking Theo has reason to not stress so much over the class he’s passing with flying colors. I figure you should tell your friends when they’re doing well instead of acting like it’s not important.” She slammed her quill down on her parchment and turned to stare directly at Malfoy.
Draco scoffed and leaned back in his chair, grey eyes boring into her bourbon colored ones. He ignored the pride he felt as he saw her eyes heat up. “Sounds like someone’s missing two appendages.” He smirked at her, eyes sparkling with amusement. Theo coughed and Blaise finally sat back down.
Hermione narrowed her eyes. “Do you really have nothing better to do, Malfoy? We’re here trying to finish up assignments, not act like petty little school kids.” She leaned back and crossed her arms over her chest. “Some of us actually have to put in the work to get a good career after school. We can’t all have our life handed to us.”
Draco’s smirk fell and his eyes narrowed. “Careful, witch. You don’t know anything about my life.”
Hermione raised a brow and opened her mouth to talk, but Blaise interrupted her by handing her a book. “Look Hermione, I think this is what we’re needing for our project.” Her eyes scanned the pages quickly and her focus immediately shifted from Malfoy as she looked at her notes.
“Blaise! You’re right! I’ll start rewriting this essay and you double check the charm work.” Hermione grabbed the book and immediately set to work as the three boys watched her. Blaise and Theo shared a look of relief while Draco tilted his head and watched her curiously. He watched her grab a sugar quill from her bag as she scribbled furiously.
Theo and Blaise both poked him in the arm and he glared at them. “Hey Malfoy I need some spare parchment. I don’t have any extra.” His head whipped to Hermione. She was still staring at her essay, making corrections to it. He stumbled getting up, but eventually made his way to retrieve it. Theo followed him, to his utter dismay.
“Well well. You were very quick to jump to that.” Theo smirked at him and leaned against one of the shelves by the parchment and quills. His smirk only grew when Draco glared daggers at him.
“Stupid git.” Malfoy muttered before turning to head back to the table with the parchment. As he and Theo sat down, the quartet finished their work in silence just in time for dinner.

May 22, 1999
“Morning Granger.” Draco greeted as he entered the common room. He ran a hand through his hair and leaned against the door frame.
Hermione was curled up in an armchair reading a book by the fireplace. She glanced up and nodded at him. “Morning Malfoy.” Her eyes returned to her book, but she could still feel his stare on her so she sighed and placed her bookmark between the pages before turning her attention back to him. “What is it?” Her eyebrow was raised, but Draco couldn’t tell if it was in annoyance or amusement.
“Hogsmeade trip today.” Again, Draco wanted to Obliviate himself. Why was it so easy to rile her up but hard to just have a normal conversation with her?
Hermione hid a smile behind her hand and covered it with a cough. Tucking a stray curl behind her ear, she looked at him. “Yes, it is. Are you going?” She laid her book down beside her and turned to face him. He was dressed more casually than she recalled seeing, a plain black shirt with black trousers and black shoes. His hair wasn’t as “perfect” as usual, either.
“I am. With Blaise and Theo.” Draco’s voice was more robotic than normal. He wanted to curse himself into oblivion. Fuck obliviating himself, he wanted someone to come in and Avada him on the spot. It couldn’t be nearly as excruciating.
“That sounds like fun. Blaise and Theo are good friends and good company. I think I’m staying here this weekend. Hogsmeade just gets so lonely. Ginny always has practice and Luna is so busy with helping her father with The Quibbler so I usually end up alone anyway.” Her voice was small, and Draco could hear how upset she was. Hermione cleared her throat and levitated a glass of water to her.
Draco studied Granger for a moment after her confession. She looked… sad. It wasn’t something he often saw the curly haired witch wear on her face. But he finally started paying more attention to her. He was able to tell now when she was upset, when she was frustrated, when she was anxious, and when she was truly happy. Of course, she didn’t know that. He’d be written off as certifiably mental. Before he could stop himself and think rationally about it he opened his mouth. “Why don’t you come with us?” It took everything in him to not look at her as he waited for her reaction.
Hermione’s mouth dropped open in surprise. She had expected him to make fun of her for her weekend plans, and wasn’t quite sure how to respond. “Er, sure. I mean yeah, that sounds great. Just let me go change and I’ll meet you in the Entrance Hall!” She hurried into her room and shut the door quickly.
Draco ran a hand down his face and let out a low groan. Way to go, Malfoy. You sounded like an idiot. He closed his eyes and leaned against the door frame, hoping today didn’t go as badly as that conversation. Running his hands through his hair once more, he sighed and headed to go meet Blaise and Theo to inform them of their extra person for the day.

May 22, 1999
“Hermioneeeee, come on! We’ve been in here for two bloody hours.” Theo whined. Draco shot him a glare as he carried a stack of precariously balanced books to the front of the store. Theo pouted and stood off to the side as Hermione carried another stack up to the counter. She stuck her tongue out at him and shoved him.
“Listen, you three had me in Honeydukes for the majority of the morning. I think I deserved this for putting up with watching all the sweets that will be giving you cavities in three months.” Hermione faked a shudder and rolled her eyes as Blaise stuffed a chocolate frog in his mouth. Draco had the decency to look affronted and scoffed.
“It’s not my fault lemon tarts are so bloody good!” he said with an air of indignance. Hermione giggled and handed over payment to the store clerk before shrinking the books down to fit in her bag. Theo nodded emphatically and tossed some Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans in his mouth. Draco however, turned his gaze back on Hermione. “Also Granger, let us not forget who almost bought out the whole Sugar Quills stock.” His grey eyes danced with amusement as she narrowed hers at him.
“Yes but that whole stock will last me at least 2 years, thank you very much.” Hermione stuck her nose in the air and stalked out of the store. “I’m hungry. Can we please go get some real food? Brews and Stews is right there.” Her voice was a little whiny, but she didn’t care. They had been in Hogsmeade for about 6 hours and she was starving.
Theo quickly sidled up to her and wrapped an arm around her shoulder, pointedly ignoring the glare Draco shot his way. “Of course we can Princess, whatever you want!” He dodged the hand she shot out to smack him and strutted toward the cafe. Blaise chuckled and followed, leaving Draco and Hermione alone, the former still glaring at Theo’s back.
Hermione glanced at Draco and rolled her eyes. “Come on then.” She grabbed his arm and pulled him in the direction of their friends, and brushed off his look of defiance. Draco relented a few steps in and she dropped his arm a few feet from the door, which he promptly opened for her. She nodded softly in thanks, but stiffened slightly as she felt his hand at the small of her back. It was gone as quickly as it was there, however, and they were at the table with Blaise and Theo, Butterbeer already in place on the table. The two boys were deep in conversation about chess and Hermione rolled her eyes at the irony.
“Of course I get two more friends who like chess as much as Harry and Ron.” she muttered, taking a sip of her drink as she made room for Draco at the table.
He couldn’t help but scoff and nod in agreement. “They’re absolute menaces when they get the chance to talk about chess. Drove me bonkers for 5 and a half years with it.” He grimaced slightly at the memories of late nights in the common room waiting for a game to be finished. “Worse when they’re playing, too.” Draco felt his face flush as Hermione laughed, but was saved from saying anything as a waiter came to take their order.
As they settled in with more Butterbeer and waited on their food, Blaise turned to look at Hermione. “Have you thought anymore about what you’re going to do after Hogwarts?” He frowned as she shook her head.
“No, I haven’t. Harry and Ron want me to come join them at the Ministry, and keep telling me about different jobs in the Law offices that are going to be opening up. Charms and Transfiguration are two subjects I’d consider getting a mastery in, but I’m not sure what to do career wise with them. McGonagall wants me to come teach. I just don’t know which way to go. And this year was supposed to help me decide, but it’s only made it harder.” She bit the inside of her cheek as she played with the sleeve of her jumper, anxiety starting to rise at the thought.
Draco, being ever observant as he was, noticed and cleared his throat. “Granger, have you ever thought of just not doing anything for a while? Pick up a small job at a bookstore or something? Salazar knows you deserve the time to just rest and not have any expectation on you to make a deadline or solve the next crisis we find ourselves under.” Theo gave him a thumbs up behind his Butterbeer.
Hermione turned to give him a quizzical look. “How do you know I’d like working in a bookstore? ASIDE from the fact I like to read and learn. That’s not enough of a reason because that’s the main driving factor behind the whole ‘Brightest Witch of Our Age’ nonsense.” With her last sentence, she rolled her eyes and sat back, waiting to hear what he would say.
Draco looked caught off guard and realized his suggestion had been a little on the nose and now he had to climb out of the hole he had started to dig. Unfortunately, there was no climbing out. “I only mean I’ve seen you in Flourish and Blotts as well as Tomes and Scrolls. You don’t just buy books, you reorganize shelves. You dust them off. You tidy up reading nooks. You look lighter in a bookshop. It just looks like it makes sense.” He kept his voice matter of fact and shrugged as he finished speaking, as if this was the most obvious thing in the world. He pointedly ignored the warmth flooding his face and instead blamed the alcohol. Blaise and Theo exchanged glances and grinned at each other. Hermione just looked stunned. She thanked Merlin and Morgana that their food arrived and saved her from having to think of an answer.
The four sat eating, sharing stories from their younger years. Theo sputtered, sending Butterbeer splashing onto Blaise who grimaced. “What.. do you mean.. you froze Neville.. in first year??” he wheezed out. He started second guessing the extra round they had bought as Blaise clapped
Draco laughed, actually laughed. Hermione grinned and tucked a stray hair behind her ear. “I mean, when Harry, Ron and I went to go stop Snape – I mean Quirrel, we thought it was Snape at first that’s why I set his robes on fire during the Quidditch match. We went to stop Quirrell from stealing the Philosopher’s stone and Neville tried to stop us. He wouldn’t move so I petrified him.” She had felt bad at the time, but was thankful her friend didn’t hold a grudge.
Blaise glanced at his watch and sighed. “Alright you lot, time to head back to the castle, else we’ll be dealing with McGonagall.” Draco, Theo, and Hermione pouted as he levitated their glasses to the counter but made their way outside obediently.
They walked in companionable silence for most of the journey, with Hermione lost deep in thought. Without warning, she grabbed Draco’s hand. He turned and looked at her, confused and slightly worried given the amount of alcohol they had all consumed. She started talking before he could blink.
“Malfoy look, I wanted to say I forgive you. For everything. I forgive you for how you acted when we were younger and I forgive you for the choices you made during the War. I don’t blame you for anything, not even Dumbledore’s death. I spoke for both you and your mother because you deserve it.” She was fidgeting with her hands and Draco was just dumbfounded. “I’ve been acting weird with you all term because I didn’t want you to think I was pitying you, because I’m not, I don’t. I do feel for your inner child, but it’s obvious you are more than the choices you made, and I’ve known that since we were eleven.” Hermione brought her hand up and started chewing on her thumb, a clear sign her nerves and anxiety were getting the best of her.
Blaise and Theo had stopped several yards in front of them. Draco stood staring at Hermione, lost for words. She rubbed the back of her neck and shook her head. “Right, let’s get back and get some sleep.” Hermione made to walk off, but was stopped by Draco grabbing her hand.
“Granger… I… thank you. And for what it’s worth, you are far more than just Potter and Weasley’s saving grace. Your worth is leaps and bounds more than any witch, wizard, or muggle.” Draco squeezed her hand lightly, warmth and happiness blooming in his chest. If he hadn’t been looking at her, he would’ve missed the way her smile lit up her entire face. He smiled softly back and they continued their trek back to the castle, not even realizing their fingers were still laced together. Blaise and Theo wisely made no mention as they bid the pair goodnight at the bottom of the staircase.
The two arrived back at their common room and entered after Draco gave their portrait the password. Hermione shrugged off her jacket and placed it on a hook beside the door along with her bag while Draco headed to the couch, levitating a pitcher of water and glasses to the table in front of him as he sat down.
“I meant it, Malfoy. I do forgive you.” Hermione’s voice was small as she sat down next to him on the sofa, pulling her feet up under her after grabbing a glass of water. “I know the choices you made were made by you, but they were made under duress. I remember how you looked in sixth year. I know you barely ate along with barely sleeping.” She turned her eyes to him, hoping he wouldn’t be upset at the mention of that year.
Draco kept his eyes trained on the fireplace as she spoke. Her words turned over in his mind for a few moments before he looked over at her. “I know, Granger. Thank you. But I need to say this, so please don’t interrupt me.” He watched her as she nodded and started twirling a curl around her finger. Closing his eyes, he took a deep breath before continuing.
“I’m sorry for everything I did. I said that much at trial. However, what I’m sorry for the most is how I treated you, specifically. You didn’t deserve any of that. You never have been a lesser person, and I hate that I did nothing but try to prove that otherwise. Honestly, I’m the lesser one of the two of us. You are brilliant in every aspect of life. I envy how naturally things come to you. Do you have to work harder? Yes. But you do it with such fortitude and elegance and it’s mind blowing that people are still so fucking blind to you and what you can bring to the table in whatever area you’re talking about. I admire how you follow what you’re passionate about, and I admire how endless that list seems to be never ending. Granger, you are one of the most… I can’t even find the proper word for it. Basically, if anyone deserves to have their life go the way they plan, it’s you. You’ve sacrificed so much of yourself to save a world that tried to cast you out immediately, and you’ve handled it like it was nothing. Yes, I know you never felt like it was nothing. I was a right prick to you for reminding you. But you aren’t dirty. You’re the cleanest of us all. And I’m glad you made it through.”
Draco finished his speech and kept his eyes off of Granger. He was not about to let her see his face with this abrupt vulnerability he laid open in front of her. She cleared her throat and he turned toward her, his eyes and face clear of emotion. Her eyes were glistening, and she was chewing on her bottom lip.
“Thank you Malfoy.” Hermione brought her brown eyes up to meet his. “You’re right, I have had to fight a lot harder than I ever imagined since coming into this world. And while you were a git when we were younger, it actually helped me. Of course I didn’t realize it then and it took the war to really help me understand the nuances. But as I said, I don’t hold it against you. I do appreciate all you said though. They were all pieces of me I forgot existed. I love Harry and Ron, really, I do. But I’m so tied to them because of the war that I don’t even know who I am in this world without them. And I think that’s something I need to figure out. Thank you.” She grabbed his hand and squeezed lightly, smiling softly at him. He gave a lopsided smile in return and gripped his hand with hers.
They then dissolved into conversation about exams and future plans. Draco was the only one who noticed they never unclasped their hands until two hours later when they bid each other goodnight.

May 23, 1999
Draco woke in a slight panic. Last night was a slight blur for him, but he vividly remembered the conversation between him and Granger before returning to Hogwarts. He remembered the apology that was on the tip of his tongue before she blurted out her forgiveness. He remembered the way her face lit up and eyes sparkled in the moonlight as he held her hand telling her his honest thoughts about her. He remembered how his entire body was warm the whole way back to the castle. And the most important (and annoying thing) thing: he remembered how Granger’s hand had felt in his.
He didn’t know if she remembered that part. She hadn’t seemed particularly oblivious when they parted ways once they had made their way into their common room. They had sat up and talked a bit longer about exams and how classes had been going before bidding each other goodnight and going to bed. It hadn’t been salacious, or even worth having another conversation about. Or it wouldn’t have been if he hadn’t woken up feeling like part of him was missing.
How did one night with a change in their behavior toward each other manage to make him feel like this? Did this require a conversation? Did this mean anything outside of a few Butterbeers too many? With a groan, he pulled himself out of bed to get dressed. He needed to go fly and clear his head.
As the blonde made his way down to the pitch, he ran into Blaise and Theo, both of whom immediately began sniggering before grabbing each other’s hands and strolling in front of him. Draco shot off stinging hexes to them both before hopping on his broom and taking off, the sounds of his friends’ laughter chasing him in the wind.
Blaise looked at Theo and shrugged. “Our boy’s got it bad. Wonder how long it will take him to admit it to himself.” He then hopped on his broom and began a lazy rise to meet Draco for laps. Theo quickly followed.
“Drake, what happened last night? You look like you fought a Boggart without your wand.” Theo called out as he approached the blonde. He dodged another Stinging Hex with a roll and glared at Draco. “Look, I’m genuinely asking. Not trying to be a prick. You look like hell.”
The blonde groaned and rolled upside down on his broom, using his thighs to hold himself on. He stayed this way for a few moments before righting himself and turning to his friends. He ran a hand down his face in frustration before looking at the other two Slytherins. “Nothing happened. That’s the thing. Not that I expected it to or planned it or even wanted it to, mind you. It was just idle conversation. She told me before we got back that she forgave me and held literally nothing I ever did against me, not even the death of Dumbledore. We got back to our common room and just sat and talked. About exams, about classes, about nothing.” Blaise shot him a pointed look and he rolled his eyes.
“Alright, fine. I may have said she’s the cleanest of us all.” He then took off in a dive leaving Blaise and Theo gaping after him. Draco closed his eyes briefly, absorbing the feel of the wind on his face. He really didn’t know what to do. He had answers on why she acted weird around him all term, but he didn’t know what that information was doing to him. He knew it was making it worse. There was nothing telling him he would be able to even be able to be with Granger, nothing even telling him he could have a measly date with her.
If life went the way everyone imagined it would go, once Granger graduated Hogwarts she would go off to be with Weasley. The conversation and confession she gave him would mean nothing. She would still go on to do great things, continue to blow everyone’s minds, and be one of the most powerful witches of their time. Her and Weasley would get married and eventually have a whole Quidditch team, living their lives in bliss. Whereas once he graduated Hogwarts, he would be thrust into the world that would see him as a Death Eater forever. He would take over his father’s legacy, attend pointless society galas while his mother searched for the perfect match, and pop out an heir or two. His life would be robotic, mundane, and ordinary. The thought made him sick.
Draco pulled out of the dive and stopped just above the grass of the pitch. Taking another deep breath, he opened his eyes only to be met by a pair of brown. If he hadn’t already been stopped and steady, he would’ve stumbled and likely fallen off his broom. Granger’s eyes were glinting and her face was bright. He couldn’t help the way her energy infected him and inadvertently grinned back. She waved at him, then waved harder when she saw Blaise and Theo coming up behind him.
Both boys elbowed him and chuckled. “Well mate, guess it’s time to study.” Blaise shook his head and the three boys made their way over to Granger. She shook her head as Theo started spinning and flying loops around them and laughed when he ruffled her hair.
“Come on you lot, let’s go study.” Blaise and Theo flung an arm around her and the group marched back to the castle to the Head common room while Draco flew above them, doing random tricks and feints the other two boys called out.

May 30, 1999
The common room was a disaster. Blaise, Theo, and Draco all sat in a huddle trying to avoid the wrath that was Hermione at crunch time. She was taking up half the common room with her own materials, bouncing between the different sections as she tried to retain as much information as she could. The three boys thought she was being utterly ridiculous and knew she would pass all her N.E.W.T.S, probably setting new high scores for all of them. However, Hermione seemed to think they were being utterly ridiculous with that line of thinking.
Draco softly cleared his throat, not wanting to distract her from what she was currently doing. Glancing at his watch, he saw it was nearing dinner. Knowing they wouldn’t be able to pry Hermione away from the room, he made his way into his room and called for a house-elf, who appeared instantly with a small pop.
“Lucky is here, Mister Malfoy! How can Lucky help?”
This was the first time Draco had called one of the school elves. He knew Hermione would have a fit, but he also knew she needed to eat and would eventually not be upset at him. It was a risk he was willing to take. “Hello, Lucky. I was wondering if you and one of your friends could bring four plates from dinner up here tonight? Her- I mean, Granger is busy studying and is going to be hard to pull away from her work. This is the only way we can ensure she eats properly.”
Hearing Hermione’s name had Lucky perking up with excitement. “Oh yes! Lucky will get Misty to help. We will be more than happy to help Misters Malfoy, Nott, Zabini keep Miss Granger fed and full for exams. We both knows how exams are.” Draco couldn’t help but grin at how happy Lucky was.
“Great, thank you!” He handed the elf a little bracelet Granger had made (yes he had taken it for this reason, and would tell her once the food was brought to them). “Granger will likely be unhappy with me for asking you for your help, so please take this. I will have another for Misty and something else for you both when you return.” The blue-eyed elf looked at him with her big round eyes and immediately started crying.
“Oh thank you Mister Malfoy, thank you! It is beautiful and Lucky will wear it forever!”
With another small pop, Lucky disappeared. Draco shook his head and headed back to the living room. He nodded discreetly at Blaise and Theo and took up his spot again by the fireplace. The three boys sat, watching Granger flit around her sections for the hundredth time.
“Ugh! This is hopeless.” Hermione groaned, falling down onto the sofa, an arm over her face. It was then Lucky and Misty decided to make an appearance with their food. Hermione sprung up, eyes narrowed at the boys when she saw the elves. Sensing the impending ire, Lucky made her way over to Hermione with her plate first.
“Here, Miss Hermione! Lucky remembers how Miss Hermione can get during exams! Lucky has watched Miss Hermione since she first came to Hogwart and has always admired her. Yes, yes! Mister Malfoy asked for help so Miss Hermione could still eat but not have to leave her studies. Lucky even got a pretty red and gold bracelet from Mister Malfoy!” The elf turned her blue eyes to Draco and watered a little before turning back to Hermione, who was now watching Draco, who grinned sheepishly and rubbed the back of his neck.
“Can I see your bracelet, Lucky?” The elf quickly shoved her arm out to Hermione, and the curly haired witch giggled slightly. Hermione quickly recognized her own work and shot a quick questioning glance to Draco, who just shrugged before turning back to his Potions book. Turning her brown eyes back to the elf, she grinned. “You’re right, Lucky. This bracelet is very pretty. I appreciate you and Misty for coming to help us.” Hermione took her plate from the elf while Misty, a tiny purple-eyed elf handed Blaise and Theo their plates. Both boys took them with a gentle thanks and began eating.
Lucky made her way over to Draco while Misty gave the others goblets of pumpkin juice. The blue eyed elf smiled brightly and he grinned back. “Here, Mister Malfoy! I hope Lucky and Misty did good on bringing the food. The feast was big tonight! But end of term feast will be bigger! We elves cannot wait to see the event Miss Hermione and Mister Zabini are hosting! It will be most wonderful!” Lucky turned and looked at both parties and nodded enthusiastically while Misty started clapping and jumping up and down.
Draco laughed at the elves and handed Misty a green and silver bracelet as promised. He then procured two silver handkerchiefs embroidered with an elegant emerald M. Both elves looked at him with wide eyes. He was very hyper aware of Hermione’s eyes on him as well, but pointedly kept his eyes glued to Misty and Lucky. “Thank you both very much. The two bracelets I found in here one day when Granger’s bag fell over. I had already planned to get them to you by the end of term, but tonight was an emergency even if she won’t admit it. The handkerchiefs are something I wanted to give you both myself. I know you know the Malfoy name, and it hasn’t always been mentioned in good things. I want this to show that from this point forward, Malfoys will no longer be a name the elves fear.” Both elves were openly crying and hugging Draco, almost pulling him off the couch with the force of their arms. Hermione was watching with amusement while Blaise and Theo rolled their eyes.
The elves disentangled themselves from Draco, whose shirt was now soaked. “Oh! Mister Draco! Misty and Lucky is so sorry!” Misty snapped her fingers and Draco’s shirt was instantly dry and wrinkle free. He dipped his head and blushed. He muttered a ‘thank you’ and and they smiled.
Once the group was settled with food and pumpkin juice, the elves disappeared, promising to bring dessert. Hermione looked over to Draco and gave him a small smile. “Thank you. I would’ve forgotten to eat completely if you hadn’t asked them for help. And thank you for doing it the right way and not just the normal way. Even if you used my own bracelets against me.” She shoved him playfully with his shoulder and he rolled his eyes.
“Yeah, yeah Granger. Don’t get used to it.”

June 3, 1999
The castle was buzzing with excitement. Today was the last day of exams. Tonight was open mic for the seventh and eighth years. Hermione was a nervous ball of energy at breakfast. Draco, Theo, and Blaise were at a loss for what to do at this point with the curly haired witch. They kept her supplied with food and drink and helped her talk through her worries at length. Misty and Lucky had also taken to popping in and checking on the group, sneaking in packs of Sugar Quills, which was Hermione’s favorite snack. At one point, Draco had to talk her into taking a small nap as opposed to a Pepper-Up Potion.
She was currently still resting as the boys sat in the common room, taking in the quiet. They all let out a bated breath and slumped on the floor. They weren’t even doing much but watching Hermione and were absolutely exhausted. “Mate, what have you gotten yourself into?” Draco glanced over at Blaise and Theo and shrugged.
“Your guess is as good as mine. But I can’t pretend this is going to be something that lasts. I imagine she’ll end up marrying Weasley in a few years and popping out a brood of Weasleys shortly after. I’m forever branded, and what I do now doesn’t change that. But I’ll be damned if I don't at least try to show her I’m serious in how I’ve changed. She’s… I can’t explain it. When I’m with her everything makes sense. I don’t feel small or useless. I don’t feel insignificant. I feel calm, assured… Fuck I even feel happy.” Draco dropped his head between his knees and sighed.
Blaise and Theo patted him on the back for a moment before they all turned at the sound of Hermione’s door opening. Draco was the first up, handing her a glass of water as she entered the room. She smiled and took a sip. “Thank you for making me take a nap.” Glancing around the common room, she grimaced. “I was a menace, wasn’t I?” She bit her lip and Draco shook his head.
“Not entirely. I would say you were more hyper focused? Menace is not the word I would use, regardless.” He glared at Theo and Blaise and they immediately turned back around, finishing up some essays they had been working on. Turning back to Hermione, he leaned against the wall. “Are you feeling better?” He took in her appearance: she was much more calm, and her eyes weren’t hazy anymore. Her hair remained in its bun, but a few curls had managed to fall around her face. He fought the urge to tuck one behind her ear, and crossed his arms over his chest to keep his hands busy.
Turning her gaze to him and away from the mess she had made, Hermione nodded. “Much. I see Misty and Lucky popped in to leave me snacks.” Her eyes glinted with amusement and Draco shrugged. “It’s appreciated. They’re right, I tend to lose track around exam time. And add in the events we’ve been doing at night, I lost myself. You, Blaise, and Theo have been lifesavers this past month. I owe you all big time.” Hermione made her way over to the counter and grabbed her wand. With a quick wave, her belongings flew back into her room and the door shut. Glancing at her watch, she sighed and tucked the curl Draco had been eyeing behind her ear. “Well, I guess it’s time to finish these exams and prepare for the event tonight. Are you ready? Still singing, yeah?”
Draco nodded and started packing up his belongings as Blaise and Theo did the same. “Yeah, I am. And no, I’m not giving you any hints about anything. You’ll have to wait and see. The lot of you.” Theo stuck his tongue out and Blaise rolled his eyes, but both boys stayed quiet. He turned back to Hermione and she was pouting. Draco scoffed and raised a brow. “Really Granger? Pouting? Please note that I am still aware that your performance is a surprise and I have yet to aggravate you about yours. And I loathe surprises.” Hermione rolled her eyes and huffed.
“Fine.” She grabbed her bag and the group headed out the door to their final Potions exam.
Draco and Hermione filed out last, taking their time to get to the Great Hall. Hermione stopped to talk to several portraits along the way, which caused Draco to have to drag her away, much to her chagrin. He simply grinned at her and they continued the trek downstairs. Every so often Draco would notice her hand brush his, and he would have to fight off a shiver. He also noticed she never pulled away if his fingers brushed hers. By the time the pair made it to the Great Hall, their fingers were loosely tangled together, and Draco felt as high as a cloud. If he wasn’t so sure about his own ability to pass this Potions N.E.W.T, he would be concerned with how hazy his head was. With small good luck smiles, they took their seats and their school career came to a close.

Open Mic Event
Exams were finally over, the feast was wrapping up, and the seventh and eighth years had gone to get ready for their performances. Hermione was in the Room of Requirement. Once she had decided on what she was doing for her time, she had the Room connect a passageway to her private room in the Heads quarters. She had been sneaking to the Room most nights when she couldn’t sleep. She had come here directly after finishing dinner, barely stopping to tell Draco and the boys bye. Glancing at her watch, she sighed and closed her eyes. Her nerves and anxiety were at an all time high. Draco had asked at the end of term feast if she wanted a calming draught and she had declined it, knowing that it wouldn’t really help. Maybe one day she would explain it all, maybe not. Either way, she was presenting something totally different and vulnerable about herself. With a final look around the Room, she smiled and then headed toward the Great Hall once more to bring a new part of Hermione Granger into the Wizarding World.
Once near the Great Hall, she ran into Headmistress McGonagall, who pulled her into a hug to hide her glistening eyes. Both witches smiled at each other, and Hermione was pointed to go to the alcove through a door beside the Great Hall. She heard students filing in and took a deep breath. Others would be joining her shortly, so she quickly summoned a cloak out of her bag. She didn’t want any extra stress once people saw what she was wearing.
Draco, Blaise, and Theo were the first to arrive after her. As her eyes met Draco’s, relief flooded through her. She could see him visibly relax as they made their way over to her. Blaise and Theo hugged her until she squealed. “Okay, okay! I’m fine, you two!” She huffed as they let go. The group moved over to a seating area and grabbed some water to sip on as others made their way in. Glancing over to the wall, Hermione noticed McGonagall had transfigured it into a sort of a one-way mirror. They could see out, but no one could see in. A small couplet of pops had Hermione whipping around to see Lucky and Misty.
“Oh Miss Hermione! Lucky and Misty just had to come see you before your performance! We is so excited to see you and the the Misters Malfoy, Nott, and Zabini! We knows you all have worked hard.” Lucky was bouncing from foot to foot and Misty was nodding enthusiastically as her friend talked.
Hermione smiled brightly at the elves and crouched down to them, pulling them both in for a hug. “Thank you both so very much! I’m so glad you were able to come say hello!” The elves hugged her back tightly before moving on to the boys. She watched in amusement as Lucky and Misty began fussing over Draco’s suit. He was trying hard to act annoyed, but she caught the glint of amusement in his eyes when he glanced over to her. She covered her mouth, and watched the rest of her classmates file in the room followed by McGonagall.
The Headmistress walked to the front of the room, a hush following her as she turned and faced them. Hermione didn’t notice Draco walk up beside her, hand resting lightly on her hip as McGonagall started talking.
“Good evening! You all have had a busy month. I have noticed the effort and determination you have all displayed, and I am so proud of each and every one of you. Before we begin, I just wanted to say a few words. First, to Miss Granger and Mister Zabini. This event has been a splendid success, so thank you for bringing this to me for consideration. Everyone has enjoyed themselves, and it has been a good way to relax after days being packed with exams. Second, All of you will be leaving the day after tomorrow to start your journey outside of school. It has been an honor to watch you all,” her eyes stopped on Draco, “grow and flourish into yourselves.”
Hermione listened intently to the rest of McGonagall’s speech and found herself among the majority of students who were sniffling. Draco handed her a handkerchief and she dabbed at her eyes, focusing her attention on the Headmistress.
“Now, I hope you all have fun. I will see some of you tomorrow to talk about career plans, and the rest of you I will see the day after. I cannot wait to see the end of this event. Good luck to you all.” She bowed her head slightly as the room erupted with applause and cheers. Misty and Lucky were still there and were now sobbing messes. Blaise and Theo each took them to console them before heading out of the alcove into the Hall. Hermione and Draco moved to the wall to watch their friends do their comedy routine.
Draco nudged her. “It’s going to be fine. All of it. I know for a fact you passed your N.E.W.T.S with flying colors. And if your track record is anything to go off of, you’re going to be fine tonight. Tonight is about fun, and being yourself. You’ve got this, Granger.” His eyes never left their friends as he spoke, because he knew if he did, he would break. He couldn’t afford to do that. It wasn’t worth opening the door. Hermione glanced over at him and squeezed his arm in acknowledgement. She didn’t have time to respond as Blaise and Theo finished their routine and the Hall erupted in cheers and applause.
Draco clapped his friends on the back in turn as they came back into the alcove and Hermione hugged them both tightly. McGonagall announced it was Hermione’s turn and she froze. Blaise and Theo helped nudge her to the door and McGonagall grabbed her hand, squeezing gently in encouragement. Hermione looked at all four people and smiled at them, feeling tears prick her eyes. Grabbing the handkerchief Draco had given her, Hermione dabbed her eyes once more before squaring her shoulders back and lifting her chin in the air. The boys all grinned at her and McGonagall squeezed her hand once more before stepping back.
Hermione walked out of the alcove to the piano that had appeared in the Hall. She silently thanked Misty and Lucky as she ran her hands over the instrument. With a deep breath, she removed her cloak, draping it neatly over the bench next to her as she sat down. With a shuddering breath, she looked up and at the wall, not knowing she was staring directly into Draco’s eyes.
“Er, hello.” Her voice cracked slightly and she took a quick sip of water. “You all know who I am, so I won’t bother introducing myself. What I will say is this: I have been playing piano since I was 7 years old. It’s something my parents and I used to do together. It’s not something I ever brought with me into this world, it’s something I saved solely for them. However, I was reminded recently by someone that I am more than what people think of me. That I am more than my intelligence and abilities. And it’s because of them I found the strength to show you all a piece of me I have been keeping hidden.” She glanced around the packed Hall, spotting several of her friends’ confused looks. A small smile graced her face as she glanced down at the keys and began playing.
Draco stood behind the wall, mouth agape as she sat deftly at the piano. He had thought she was joking when he saw the sign up list. Now he was mad that he ever doubted Hermione’s abilities. Aside from being in a bookstore or a classroom, this was the most at ease he had ever seen the Gryffindor Princess. Her gown was simple and elegant, a deep burgundy with gold swirls dancing down the skirt. Her brown curls were held together in a bun at the nape of her neck, a few stray curls floating around her face. He watched her hands move over the keys playing a melody that shot his heart straight down to his stomach. Before he could stop himself, his feet carried him out of the alcove and into the Hall. Hermione had closed her eyes and leaned into the music, he could see the calm resting over her as she played, moving side to side, head tilted up. He couldn’t look away. The Hall was deathly silent as Hermione played. She took a shuddering breath and Draco gravitated slowly toward the piano, catching the soft whispers of lines of the song she played.
“'Cause I, 'cause I
I don’t know how to feel
But I wanna try
I don’t know how to feel
But someday I might
Someday I might
Think I forgot how to be happy
Something I’m not, but something I can be
Something I wait for
Something I’m made for
Something I’m made for”
The last notes of the piano played out and Hermione opened her eyes. She wasn’t sure what she expected, but Draco standing in front of her looking at her like she was a priceless piece of art was not it. Before she had a chance to discern what his look was about, the Hall erupted into applause and Ginny, Luna, Neville, and Seamus came and hugged her. Blaise and Theo had also made their way into the Hall. She laughed as Theo picked her up and spun her around before handing her to Blaise who did the same. Draco watched the glow radiate from her as she talked briefly with McGonagall who was openly crying. Lucky and Misty had even popped in to hug and shower Hermione with compliments. The Headmistress hugged Hermione and dabbed at her eyes before turning to face the crowd of students.
“Well,” McGonagall started, “That was an absolutely beautiful performance. Thank you, Miss Granger, for being so open with us all. I know it can’t have been easy.” She shared a knowing look with the curly haired witch before turning her steely blue eyes on Draco. “Mr. Malfoy, I do believe it is your turn.”
Blaise and Theo had to physically shake Draco out of his stupor. “Er, yes, Headmistress it is. Give me just a moment.” McGonagall gave a curt nod and he turned his gaze to Hermione who was looking at him quizzically as he made his way to her.
He started fidgeting with his cufflinks as he looked at her. Her eyes were glowing, and she looked serene. Clearing his throat, Draco spoke, “Gran- Hermione,” he corrected himself. “Hermione, that was… that was beautiful. And your voice… the lyrics. I’m sorry if I ever gave you the impression I thought you would be awful. You were wonderful. You are wonderful.” He brought a hand up and cupped her face lightly, thumb brushing her cheekbone briefly before he tucked a curl behind her ear. “I’m proud of you. I know this year has been difficult, but you’ve made your own name. And I’m proud of you.” He wrapped her in a hug and stepped back.
Hermione smiled up at him. “Thank you, Draco. Thank you for giving me the strength and courage to do that. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without you. Now go, before McGonagall starts getting impatient.” She squeezed his arm and walked over to where Blaise and Theo stood. Both boys immediately wrapped their arms around her again and she laughed before turning her attention back to Draco, whose eyes were locked on her. Hermione nodded encouragingly at him as he picked up the guitar that Lucky and Misty had brought in.
Clearing his throat, he walked up to the microphone. “Hi. Erm, I’m not sure I’m going to be able to follow up Hermione’s performance, but I guess I don't really have a choice. I know most of you here don’t care for me, and it’s completely understandable. Hermione said someone reminded her of her worth this year, and that’s something I’ve been struggling with. I would like to take this moment to apologize to every one of you for how I’ve negatively affected not only you here in school, but also any lasting effects my actions in the war caused. I am more than my father’s choices, and the choices I made because I thought I was right.
Now, I’m also doing something tonight that I’ve never done. I’ve played guitar and other instruments my entire life, but I’ve never publicly sang. But this year, I’ve had some things come up that I didn’t know how to process. So I started writing. And this is going to show a side of me I’ve never even admitted to myself until recently, though it’s been present long before now. So, right. Here we go.”
Draco took a deep breath as he started strumming the guitar. His eyes found Hermione’s and he opened his mouth to sing:
“I wish I knew
Everything there is to know about you.
And I want you to see
Just exactly what you mean to me.
You, you think you know me.
I guarantee there’s a lot more to see.
And You, you don’t believe it’s true
That if I’m dreaming I’m dreaming of you.
And I wish that I could hold your hand,
Feet beneath the sand.
And I wish that I could drive you in my car,
To kiss you under stars.
I wanted you to be
Everything you deserve to be and
If I close my eyes
I can see you perfectly.
And I, I don’t know where to go
I wrote a song just to let you know.
That we, we could be together
I’ll hold you forever
And I wish that I could hold your hand,
Feet beneath the sand.
And I wish that I could drive you in my car,
To kiss you under stars.
And I wish that I could hold your hand,
Feet beneath the sand.
I wish I could feel your touch,
I think about you so much.”
The Hall erupted in immediate applause as Draco finished his song. His eyes had never left Hermione’s, and he saw her pull her handkerchief out again. He felt a tug in his heart as she held her hand on her chest. Blaise and Theo came up to him and clapped him on the back, but he couldn’t tear his eyes from the brunette witch as she walked up to him.
“Present long before now?” She arched a brow before leaning in to hug him. He wrapped his arms around her small frame and chuckled.
“I’ll tell you the story sometime. But first, let me take you to dinner. Tomorrow night after we leave. Somewhere small, out of the way.” His voice was strained, both from nerves and singing. His silver eyes held her brown ones, his heart felt like it was going to burst out out of him.
Hermione eyed him carefully. Blaise and Theo were standing off to the side, unsure of which way to look. After a few moments Hermione nodded and wrapped her arms around his neck as Blaise and Theo started yelling and dancing around. Draco picked her up and spun her around a few times before setting her back down and looking at their two friends. “You two aren’t coming.”
Looking back at Hermione, Draco smiled. “You’re sure? What about Weasley and Potter?” His eyes held worry in them, and Hermione brought her hand to his face, running her fingers through the hair at the nape of his neck.
“Draco, I don’t care about what my life should be. I care about what it will be. And I will never be what Ron wants. I will never be happy being just a wife and mother. I don’t know what I want. But I know I’m worth more than just going through the motions.” Hermione smiled up at him and Draco melted.
“Okay then. Tomorrow at 7.”
“Tomorrow at 7.”
And with that, Draco leaned down and kissed Hermione softly. Both of them looking forward to finding their places in the world together.
