Work Text:
Have you ever fallen in love with someone’s smile? From the way their lips curve, to the way their cheeks puff, the way their eyes crinkle, and how their entire face lights up… Gunwook knows.
Oh, he knows it well.
It started from a simple smile that made his heart beat a little differently that day. Nearly a year has passed since then, and now he’s stupidly in love with the guy who regularly visits his coffee shop. So after sometime, whenever Gunwook doesn’t see that lovely smile, he knows that Kim Taerae must be having a bad day. Like today.
Kim Taerae comes with his best friend today. He calls him Hao hyung but Gunwook knows his name is Zhang Hao from the name he puts on his coffee order. After they order a pair of ice Americanos, they sit down on the table Taerae always sits. The corner table next to the big window, his favorite spot every time he comes.
On bright, sunny days, the sunlight hits Taerae’s face just right, and it makes Gunwook’s day feel extra special. But even if there’s a snowstorm outside, Gunwook bet it will still be a great day for him if he could see Taerae sitting on that table. So, Gunwook always makes sure to wipe down that specific table a few extra times—more than he does for the others—just to make sure it’s perfect.
Today the sun isn’t shining that bright, a lot of clouds hanging low. It feels like Taerae’s mood mirrors the weather outside. His face looks troubled, as if something’s weighing on him.
“What do I do now without a plus one?”
Gunwook hears what Taerae just said to Hao. The coffee shop isn’t that big, just a cozy one on the corner of the street. So whenever there isn’t many people, like today, Gunwook could hear their conversation.
“You don’t have to come with a plus one. You can just find one later at the wedding! Hanbin has lots of good looking friends.” Hao replies.
“Definitely not happening. That jerk Hyunwoo is coming too! You know him, if I go alone his ego will fly through the roof. I’m not letting him flaunt his ass just because I’m single now.”
Kim Taerae is single now.
Gunwook freezes mid making a cup of matcha latte.
He is single now, and looking for a plus one to go to Zhang Hao’s wedding. He can’t believe this day actually comes, because Gunwook knows Taerae has been in a long term relationship. Which is why Gunwook never acted on his feelings.
“Hyunwoo? Your ex from what? Three, four years ago?? He’s still on your ass?”
“Oh yeah, he always thinks of me as his rival. Every time there’s an event we both attend he’ll find a way to belittle me.” Taerae’s facial expression turns sour. Gunwook doesn’t know who Hyunwoo is, because that’s not the name of Taerae’s long term, now ex, boyfriend.
“Who’s he with now anyway? I don’t remember inviting him?”
“He’s dating the CEO of his agency, you invited that CEO right? Uh what’s his name…..”
“Michael Lee? So Hyunwoo is going as his plus one?”
“Most likely, it’s YOUR wedding hyung, he’ll do anything to come.”
“Well, so how do we find you a new guy within less than a week?”
Gunwook wishes he has the bravery of Katniss Everdeen. But he is definitely not going to shout I volunteer as tribute in his quiet coffee shop right now. Gunwook doesn’t know what to do, this feels too fast. He never expected an opportunity like this to fall into his lap so quickly. To Taerae, he’s probably just a nameless, faceless barista at the coffee shop he frequents, nothing more. He doesn’t know how to shove his presence so that Taerae would consider him as a potential date within that time frame.
“Hyung, are you done with the matcha?”
“Huh, what?” Gunwook’s body jumped a little, breaking his spiraling thoughts. “Ah, shit sorry.” Gunwook quickly finishes the matcha latte he accidentally abandoned.
“Hyung, why don’t you just grab him before he leaves and say that you’re interested in him?”
Gunwook gasps in disbelief. Han Yujin’s innocent rounded eyes, looks right back at him. Gunwook comes closer to Yujin, to make sure his voice will not be heard by anyone else. “And say what? Hey I’ve been eavesdropping your conversation, I’d love to accompany you to the wedding?” Gunwook whispers aggressively.
“Why not? But maybe ‘accidentally overheard’ would be a better choice of word?” says Yujin.
Gunwook doesn’t know whether Yujin is actually serious or is he making fun of him. “Yeah, no. I don’t want to make him uncomfortable, what if he never comes back here because of that?”
That’s just one ‘what if’ in his head in between of hundreds of ‘what if’s.
Gunwook slips the cup sleeve on after finishing the matcha latte and hands it to the customer. Thankfully the lady who ordered the drink didn’t even realize that her drink took a little longer than usual. Gunwook then moves on to the next order, but it’s only an iced latte. His hands muscles are way too trained for that. So while his hands are moving on its own making the drink, his mind drifts elsewhere.
Gunwook has no trouble communicating with other people. After all, his daily life revolves around dealing with all kinds of people who come through the coffee shop. But he isn’t sure why, when it comes to Kim Taerae he turns into a shrinking violet. Every time Taerae comes to order, he rarely initiated small talks while he has no problem doing that to other customers. He thought this feeling is only a fleeting crush that will pass sooner or later. But here he is, still with a growing infatuation even after months passing by. Gunwook thought being a secret admirer, like stealing glances at Taerae’s face, is enough. Not only because he had a boyfriend, but Gunwook thinks he’s just a guy in between Taerae’s one million plus admirers.
Taerae’s instagram has over a million followers who adore his daily life contents. He’s a popular influencer, and so does his friend, Zhang Hao, who has double the amount of followers. Taerae's circle of friends is indeed intimidating. Even Taerae's ex boyfriend is an actor for god’s sake.
But now that the window of chance has been opened, Gunwook finds himself wanting more.
He wants more, but he isn’t sure if he’s good enough for him.
“Hi, excuse me?”
Gunwook’s cloud of thoughts disperses abruptly after hearing someone calling him. He sees Zhang Hao standing in front of him. Taerae is still at their table, though it looks like he’s getting ready to leave as well
“Yes?” Gunwook replies.
“Can I order an iced americano to go?”
Gunwook looks around to find Yujin, because he’s supposed to handle the payments while Gunwook is making the food and drinks. But he is nowhere to be found, probably in the toilet, Gunwook thinks.
“Of course! I’ll be right there as soon as possible!” Gunwook smiles at Zhang Hao. He quickly finishes the drinks he’s currently making and gives them to the customer. After washing his hands, Gunwook quickly walks over to take the order.
“Alright, one iced americano to go. Which size would you like?” Says Gunwook as he types in the order on the machine.
“Large please.”
“Okay, anything else? Maybe a chocolate chip cookie or… ah we have an almond one as well. They’re freshly baked!” Like a good salesman Gunwook offers an additional item just like he does as usual.
“Hey, how come you never offer me a cookie as well?”
Gunwook whips his head towards the source of the voice. It’s Taerae, coming over. The moment their eyes meet, Gunwook’s mind goes blank, and words fail him.
Taerae chuckles, “I’m kidding…”
Gunwook feels bad, because it’s true. He never does anything more than necessary to Taerae. Gunwook could only blame himself for being such a coward.
“I’ll take a chocolate chip, Hanbin would like it.” says Hao.
“Make that two.” Taerae quickly adds.
“Why? You don’t like chocolate…” Hao responds to Taerae’s unusual order.
“I don’t know, this stress is making me craves it.” Taerae answers, his eyes still on his phone. Since Gunwook’s height is towering over Taerae’s, he could see a glimpse of what is on Taerae’s phone. The way Taerae’s thumb swiping aggressively left and right, confirms what Gunwook already suspects. He’s on a dating app.
“uh, o-okay, so, one large ice americano and two chocolate chip cookies? Is that all?” Gunwook confirms the order once more.
“Yes, that’s all, thanks.”
While processing the payment, Yujin finally returns from the toilet break. Yujin quickly takes over the order and starts making the drink. It’s just what they always do, when one handles one task, the other fills in the gaps. As Yujin prepares the iced americano, Gunwook packs up the cookies to go.
Gunwook’s mind begins to wander again. He wonders if offering himself as Taerae’s wedding plus-one might not be such a good idea after all. Taerae is probably looking for someone he can show off, someone at least comparable to his actor ex-boyfriend.
Maybe he’s not the right person to bring to the wedding. Maybe he shouldn’t even try.
Gunwook glances over at Yujin to see if he’s finished with the drink. He notices the iced americano sitting ready on the counter, but Yujin is suspiciously scribbling something on a napkin with a pen.
“What are you doing?” Gunwook calls.
Yujin quickly finishes whatever he’s writing, hiding it from Gunwook’s view. Too suspicious… way too suspicious.
Yujin calls out Zhang Hao to give him the iced americano and the cookies, all while still clutching the suspicious napkin.
“Taerae-ssi…” Yujin calls him.
Oh no…
He watches as Yujin hands the napkin to Taerae. Taerae looks confused at first, but just as he’s about to take it, like a slow motion, Gunwook snatches the napkin before Taerae could reach it. So Taerae’s hand, instead of grabbing the napkin, grabs Gunwook’s hand.
Gunwook, as if his hand hitting a hot pan, quickly yanks his hand away along with the napkin.
“Let me get you a new one” says Gunwook. He quickly grabs some napkins from the box, but not just one or two sheet, but a handful of it. He carelessly grabs probably half of what’s in the stack.
“Here you go.” Gunwook drops a handful of napkin to Taerae. He then looks over to Zhang Hao and says, “Oh and congratulations on your upcoming wedding.”
Gunwook panics, those words just came out of his mouth without him processing it first. So he ends up he bolting toward the stockroom, embarrassment floods through him.
Finally away from the people, Gunwook then checks the napkin that Yujin was about to give to Taerae.
My hyung likes you, if you need a date for the wedding he’s available.
Han Yujin... as expected…
Gunwook then hears Yujin wishing them a good evening. Not long after he hears a knock on the stockroom door.
“They left.”
Hearing that, Gunwook finally comes out.
“Listen, as your favorite cousin, I just want to see you be happy with him.”
“Don’t. I’ll take care of it myself!” Gunwook’s voice comes out more forcefully than he intended. He knows Yujin’s intentions are good. Because if he was in Yujin’s shoes, he’d probably feel frustrated as well with the way he acted in front of Taerae. But still, he thought that would be embarrassing and Taerae might see him as a huge coward.
“Geez chill… The Park Gunwook, panicking? That’s a first…”
“Shut up. Did they say anything? They probably think i’m creepy for eavesdropping their conversation.” Gunwook starts to worry after he mentioned the wedding to Taerae and Hao.
“You’re fine, he just said thank you. The wedding is practically a public knowledge now. I think it would be weirder if you don’t know about them getting married.”
Yujin’s right, everyone knows about it anyway.
He finally could breathe, for now. But tonight will be a sleepless night for Gunwook. Because his mind couldn’t stop thinking about ways to make himself suitable as Kim Taerae’s potential boyfriend.
It’s already 5 PM, yet Taerae still hasn’t come to the cafe. Even though Taerae doesn’t come every single day, but Gunwook knows that he always stops by the cafe on Mondays after lunch. But not today.
Tring.
The soft chime of the cafe doorbell rings, signaling someone coming in. Gunwook’s head snaps toward the door. His heart quickens with a spark of hope. Unfortunately, it’s not Taerae.
“Hyung??? Is that you???” It’s Yujin, he always comes right after he finished his uni classes. Now, standing in front of the door, he looks completely shocked.
“Ugh, just come and quickly get change, we’re busy!” Gunwook rolls his eyes.
Yujin walks to enter the counter area while looking fixated at Gunwook as if he’s seeing an alien instead.
“Stop staring.”
“What happened to you?!” Says Yujin, looking at Gunwook from the top to bottom.
Gunwook looks entirely different today, unlike himself. He usually comes to the coffee shop with either a t-shirt or a hoodie if the weather is cold. He wears his glasses daily because he has myopia. He comes with whatever hair style he wakes up with, never styled it. Basically he never dresses up just to go to work. But not today.
Today Park Gunwook woke up early, to dig his wardrobe and find his best set of outfit. After rummaging his closet, he found a black turtle neck and a white shirt to wear. Decent enough compared to what he usually wear. He took extra time styling his hair, parting his bangs neatly. After tidying up his face, he applied some cream to brighten his complexion, finishing with a touch of red-tinted lip balm to avoid looking too shabby. He even ditched his glasses in favor of contacts. Good thing he managed to find a few pairs stashed away. It has been so long since he put some effort to look good.
“Oh shut up, this is me trying alright.” Gunwook grunts.
Yujin looks around the busy cafe confused. A busy business is a good thing, but right now the cafe is unusually busy with predominantly girls. “Uh, seems like you’re attracting the wrong crowd hyung. Where’s Taerae-ssi anyway, did he leave already today?”
Gunwook sighs, “I don’t know, he hasn’t come.“
Yujin laughs looking at grumpy Gunwook. He just pats Gunwook’s back and proceed to wash the piled up cups and dishes.
Meanwhile, a couple of girls keep coming to order more drinks. They keep giggling, batting their eyelashes, while clearly trying to flirt with Gunwook. Gunwook isn’t used to this much of attention but he’s trying to be professional and keep a smile. Though he badly wants to put a sign in front of him that says ‘Not interested in anyone other than Kim Taerae.’ Unfortunately, he could only wish.
Gunwook and Yujin kept busy until around dinner time, and the crowd isn’t dying down at all.
Tring.
The door bell chimes again. Gunwook wasn’t paying attention this time because he’s busy taking orders. Until he heard Taerae’s voice.
“Huh, didn’t expect it to be this crowded.” He says.
Gunwook looks over to where Taerae is standing… but he doesn’t come alone. He comes with a guy he has never seen before. Taerae scans the room for an empty table, his usual spot already taken. Luckily, there’s a table for two near the window. It’s a little farther away, but from the counter where Gunwook stands, he can still catch glimpses of Taerae’s face. His curiosity peaks as he watches the unknown guy who’s with him.
“Hyung! Hyung! Help heat up a garlic bread! I think we forgot someone’s order!”
Gunwook quickly grabs one of the garlic bread and slides it into the oven, forcing himself to look away from Taerae and the unknown guy. The guy... well, he fits the stereotype of a nerd. Slim, with a slightly slouched, rigid posture. His hair is unstyled, rather a mess. Thick-rimmed square glasses sit on his nose, and his face is set in a serious expression, not a smile in sight. Gunwook’s best guess? A client. Business meetings happen anywhere these days, right? It’s impossible for that guy to be Taerae’s date…. right??? Because Taerae’s ex looked like a greek god statue with sharp cut jaw and great biceps. While that guy is the exact opposite. Gunwook might not have a sculpted body as amazing as Taerae’s ex, but he’s pretty buff as well. It’s slightly embarrassing to admit but today he tried to look similar to Taerae’s ex. So that maybe Taerae would spare a glance at him.
“Gunwook hyung… even a guy who looks like that could land a date with Taerae-ssi. Why couldnt you??”
Hearing that, Gunwook automatically threw the oven mitt he has been holding towards Yujin. “That is definitely not his date.”
“I’m betting 10,000 won that he is… oh Taerae-ssi is coming... Go ask him!”
Gunwook sees Taerae walking towards the counter as well, so he quickly tells Yujin to take care of the garlic bread so that he could take Taerae’s order.
“Hi, what can I get for you today?” Gunwook greets him.
“Hey, I’ll get one ice americano and one… uh… salted caramel mocha frappuccino…. with whipping cream… and extra drizzle of chocolate.”
“Alright, for here right? is that all?”
“What would you recommend me today? I really enjoyed the cookies yesterday by the way, thank you.” Taerae smiles. Oh that smile… Gunwook brain short circuited for a quick moment.
“I-is that so, was the chocolate chip alright? Your friend said you don’t like chocolate…”
“It’s not that I don’t like chocolate, I just don’t like something that is too sweet. But your cookie was light with the perfect sweetness. Definitely a great pair to eat with a cup of coffee.”
“Oh that’s good to hear… If you don’t like something that’s too sweet, then the mocha frappuccino must be for your… date?” Gunwook thinks this would be a good subtle way to know if Taerae’s on a date or not.
“Ah, yeah.”
Gunwook curses inside his mind. Taerae is actually on a date right now.
“Well then, would you like to try a strawberry shortcake today? I assure you it’s not too sweet, it has a fresh slightly sour taste from the strawberry.”
“I’ll take one of that… I trust you.”
Gunwook’s heartbeat fasten, with only one word Kim Taerae can send him head over heels like this. Taerae still stares into his eyes with a smile, and it only makes Gunwook feel more flustered. He can only hope that Taerae doesn’t notice the growing red hues on his cheeks.
“A-alright. If that is all, the total is 18,000 won.”
Taerae hands over his card to pay.
It took him a second to process this, he couldn't believe the audacity of that guy. First of all, making Taerae go all the way here to place an order by himself is already a crime in Gunwook’s opinion, especially with a complex drink order. Second, Gunwook couldn’t believe he let Taerae pays for him. At first, Gunwook thought maybe the guy is better than he appears, like perhaps he has a good personality. He almost felt bad for judging someone by their cover, but now, he’s entirely confused why Taerae would go on a date with a guy like that. Because if Gunwook is in that guy’s shoes, he’d never do that to Taerae. He’ll pamper him, treat him like a prince, and would do anything for him.
Once Yujin finished preparing Taerae’s order he calls out the order number, and Taerae picks up the drinks and cake by himself. Again.
As soon as Taerae leaves, Gunwook couldn’t help but to let out his frustration. “The hell?? That guy didn’t even help him pick up the drinks!”
“You owe me ten hyung.”
“I DID NOT AGREE TO YOUR BET!” Gunwook stomps out for a quick toilet break, trying to calm himself down as well.
If only he’s in that guy’s position, he would treat Taerae so much better. But he knows he’s the only one to blame for not being confident. Gunwook knows he has to step up his game.
Taerae’s date last night as expected turned horrible. Gunwook had to watch through the whole train wreck. He wonders how the hell did Taerae ended up with a guy like that. Did he get catfished? Was he forced into the date? Because even someone as easygoing as Taerae was struggling to talk with that guy. He was quiet, zero initiative so Taerae had to lead the conversation. Maybe calling it a conversation would be a reach, it was more like an interview. Obviously Taerae got tired not even an hour passed he had to use the ‘emergency call’ escape.
But hey, at least he finished his strawberry shortcake before making his escape. Gunwook can’t help but smile, a tiny flutter of excitement stirring in his stomach recalling their brief exchange last night. Kim Taerae trusts him. That thought alone is enough to send his heart racing.
It’s a new day, Gunwook promises himself he will push past his doubts. If someone like the guy from yesterday could land a date with Taerae, so could he.
Today Gunwook is dressed more comfortably than yesterday but neater compared to what he used to wear. His newfound popularity was good for the business but both him and Yujin was struggling to keep up. This cafe is actually one of the family businesses that Gunwook’s parents own. After graduating from university, Gunwook has been managing this cafe. He has some part time workers whenever Yujin isn’t available, but this cafe isn’t ready yet for a crowd like last night. Gunwook wouldn’t call himself a café owner, though, since the cafe isn’t technically his. If anyone ask what he does, he’ll say that he’s a cafe manager at certain occasions, but most of the time he’ll simply say that he’s a barista. That is his passion after all, he loves coffee and everything about it. These days, he’s also learning to bake.
For today Gunwook wears a black shirt. He doesn’t sleek up his hair as much as yesterday, just enough to keep his bangs neat. He wears his usual glasses, no more contacts because it hurts to wear them in such a long period of time.
It’s a quiet brunch time, the morning rush has passed, so now his part time worker could handle it by herself. Meanwhile Gunwook sits tucked behind the counter, working on his laptop to manage the cafe’s finances, his least favorite task. Good thing he has the foundation of it from the business finance courses he took through university.
Tring.
The cafe doorbell chimes. Gunwook remains focused on his laptop screen, not even glancing at the door. Soon after that he hears someone places an order.
“Is Gunwook-ssi not here today?”
A very familiar voice. Gunwook automatically stands and approach the source of the voice. It is Taerae… with another guy he has never seen before.
“I’m here.”
“Oh, hi! Sorry didn’t see you there! I was going to ask for another dessert of the day, if you don’t mind.”
“Of co-”
“I don’t think dessert is a good idea.” The guy Taerae comes with cuts Gunwook before he could say anything.
“Uh why?” Taerae asks.
“Just not good for your body.”
Gunwook’s eyes widen, his jaw tightening. Good thing he has full control of his fist right now, if not it would have already landed on that guy’s face.
“Okay” Taerae’s voice sounded disappointed but still accepting it without putting up a fight. Gunwook is rather surprised of why he’d willingly let him say such comment.
They finished ordering, settling for just drinks. Gunwook decided to take care of making their order himself. As he prepared the drinks, he couldn’t help but steal glances at the two of them. This time the guy Taerae brings looks like those finance bros who works at those companies in a high-rise building. He wears a suit and tie, an attire definitely for work. The guy looks busy, tapping his iPad and phone, juggling his attention back and forth between work and Taerae. Taerae doesn’t seem to be bothered, but Gunwook couldn’t help but feel irritated. Why would a 9-to-5 looking guy grab a brunch date if he’s going to work during the date?
Gunwook finished making their drinks and calls out their order number. As expected, the busy guy is still glued to his phone, leaving Taerae to pick up their drinks. Gunwook places the two drinks on a tray. He slides the tray towards Taerae but his hands are reluctant to let it go. So when Taerae tries to take the tray, Gunwook is still holding it as well.
“You seem like you have something to say?” Taerae asks, his left eyebrow raises looking confused. Gunwook curses his face and body for betraying him. He knows that he’s the type of guy who wears his heart on his sleeve.
“Ah, sorry... Nevermind, here you go.” Gunwook takes his hands off the tray, while forcing a smile, trying to mask his feeling.
“No, say it I wanna hear it.”
“No, no forget it. It’s none of my business.”
“Just spill it out Gunwook-ssi.”
Gunwook’s heart skips a beat. He finally realizes that Taerae has called his name twice today. So Taerae knows his name... Of course it’s not that hard to figure out, since Gunwook wears his name tag on his apron, but still… not everyone cares enough to read it.
“Well… I was gonna say… that… I think it’s dumb.” Gunwook finally says it.
“Excuse me?”
“I think it’s dumb for changing your preference to fit into someone’s else’s preference.” Gunwook adds. Taerae’s face looks taken aback by the comment, making Gunwook regret letting his mind out of his mouth.
“Wow, okay... I’m just gonna take this and go back to my seat, thanks.”
Taerae leaves with the drinks, while Gunwook wants to slam his head on this counter. It’s gone. His chance for a date is gone. It was going well, he was a step closer to Taerae but now he feels like he’s taken a hundred steps back further away from what they were in the beginning.
Gunwook tells his part time worker to take a lunch break first before the after-lunch rush hits. Gunwook then takes over the payment area while feeling dejected. From his position, Gunwook can see and hear Taerae and his date since the cafe isn’t busy right now. The guy sits with his back towards Gunwook, while Taerae is sitting in front of him so Gunwook could see Taerae’s face. This time at least the other guy is engaging with Taerae unlike his date yesterday. But the more Gunwook listens to their conversation, the more repulsed he feels towards that finance bro guy. He’s a huge narcissist.
It all started with him saying, “Sorry about the notifications, everyone needs me at work” Hearing that, Taerae apologized for taking his time and asked him more about his job. Apparently, the guy works at a big fintech corporation. But then he kept going on about himself, and closed his sentence by, “you should be honored I choose to spend my time with you right now.”
Gunwook’s jaw drops to the floor, and Taerae must have noticed, because now he’s staring back at Gunwook.
Taerae and the narcissistic guy continue talking, but now something changes. As the guy speaks, Taerae keeps stealing glances at Gunwook. Each time the guy says something ridiculous, Taerae looks at Gunwook, as if waiting to see his reaction.
The guy goes on about his trip to Milan last week, bragging about how he came back with a haul of luxury goods and had to pay an outrageous amount in taxes. He finishes the story with, “But it wasn’t that expensive, I paid everything in full. We have to be a good citizen to make the country’s economy thrive.”
Taerae laughs, but Gunwook can tell it's a sarcastic laugh. His normal laugh doesn’t sound like that. Taerae’s eyes are still on Gunwook’s, giving him a look as if he’s saying ‘are you hearing what I am hearing’ type of gaze.
The guy kept going on and on every time Taerae asks him something. At this point, Gunwook feels like Taerae is just collecting every ridiculous thing the guy says for his entertainment, not a genuine interest. But what keeps Gunwook hooked—and, admittedly, eavesdropping—is the way Taerae keeps looking back at him. It might be Gunwook’s own delusion but he could feel some kind of tension in the air that makes something inside him tingles. He doesn’t know how to interpret this but he wants more of whatever this is.
The finance guy left around the end of lunch time, while Taerae decides to stay longer in the cafe alone. So Gunwook gathers every ounce of courage in his body and seizes this chance to fix his mistakes before. He takes a deep breath before walking towards Taerae with a piece of tiramisu in his hand.
“Hey… I want to apologize.” says Gunwook while placing the plate of tiramisu in front of Taerae.
Taerae looks up at Gunwook surprised, “With a tiramisu?”
“If you want something else I could get them for you..”
“You don’t have to say sorry, I know what you said wasn’t wrong. I like your honesty… But I’ll take the complimentary tiramisu.” Taerae pulled the plate closer to him.
“Okay, enjoy your dessert.”
Gunwook leaves with the biggest smile on his face.
Gunwook knows the wedding happens on Sunday, and it’s already Wednesday. After yesterday’s encounter Gunwook’s confidence grows, seems like there’s hope after all. Although he still doesn’t know how, his only strategy right now is to approach Taerae and show himself step by step. It has been working, sort of. But clock is ticking and he needs to walk faster if he wants to reach that goal.
Gunwook is hoping today will be different—that Taerae will come alone, like he usually does, instead of bringing his date. Since this morning, Gunwook has been running scenarios in his head of things he would say today once Taerae is here. But now, it’s almost 9 PM, the cafe is closing in an hour, and still no sign of him. It’s not unusual, since there are days when Taerae doesn’t come at all, so Gunwook didn’t think much of it.
When his mind is already filled with all the things he needs to do to close up the cafe, the cafe doorbell suddenly chimes. Gunwook freezes in place.
Taerae walks in, but it’s not his presence that makes Gunwook’s heart dropped. Taerae comes again with a new guy. But this time is different, Gunwook knows the guy. If the other two before were a red-flag type of guys, then this guy right now must be a full on neon-red-LED-flag type of guy.
His name is Jang Jinwoo. Gunwook knows this guy from university, but now they both attend the same gym. They’re not close, but Gunwook heard a lot of bad stories about him enough to conclude that he’s not a good person for Taerae. On top of that, for some reason, this guy has beef with Gunwook but Gunwook doesn’t even know why. Maybe he’s just a prick who’s snaps every time they cross paths. The thing is Gunwook knows how great Jinwoo is at pretending to make himself look like a desirable good guy to get what he wants. Once he’s done with his toy, he’ll dispose them easily and move on to his next prey. And Gunwook isn’t going to let Taerae be one of his toys that he’ll dispose someday.
They both took a seat, and so far Jinwoo has been acting completely normal. But Gunwook knows better, he cannot take his eyes off of them tonight. Just in case one of those rumors about him is true. Jinwoo got up to the order counter by himself. So Gunwook who was tidying up the inventory, takes over the order and tells his part time worker to shift into a different task. As soon as Jinwoo sees Gunwook standing there, his irritating face he that always sees at the gym comes out.
“Oh my, look who we have here. Park Gunwook is making drinks for me… I didn’t know you work here.”
“What can I get for you?” Gunwook cuts his words short, straight to the point.
“Give me an ice latte and one ice americano for my boyfriend.” says Jinwoo with a smirk.
“He’s not your boyfriend.”
“Oh? Does that matter to you?”
Gunwook doesn’t say anything, he proceed to put in the order. “Anything else?”
“So there’s something between you guys?”
Gunwook still dismisses Jinwoo’s questions, “then that will be 10,500 won, card?”
“Oho I see, that makes me wants him even more… Here.” Jinwoo holds out his card to Gunwook, but Gunwook hasn’t taken the card. He sighs.
“Jinwoo, I’m asking you nicely... Can you find someone else to play with and leave Taerae-ssi alone?”
Jinwoo laughs out loud, “and what good would that be for me? Are you going to pay me to stay away from him?”
Gunwook knows, this is a dumb move but he has to at least try to get him away from Taerae. “Just do it, while i’m still being nice to you.”
“Mmmmm, no! Are you kidding me, this is the best thing ever! Getting the one and only Kim Taerae plus I get to steal him away from you? Such a huge perk!”
“I still don’t know what your problem is with me, but don’t pull him into this.”
“Whatever Gunwook, just go make our drinks.” Jinwoo tosses his card at Gunwook and it hits his chest. Every fiber of Gunwook’s being tries to hold itself back and not make a scene. He processes the order and Jinwoo finally leaves.
“Who was that hyung?” Yujin comes over to asks once Jinwoo has left.
“An old…. acquaintance.” says Gunwook. He really doesn’t know Jinwoo that much, calling him a friend would be too far. “Can you help me keep an eye of them?”
“What did he do? Is he a bad person?”
“There were some serious allegations that he sexually coerced someone” Gunwook says with a low voice, “but to be honest I’m not sure because there are so many rumors about him and I don’t know which ones are true.”
Yujin nods, realizing that this is more serious than he expects, “Okay…”
Gunwook sighs, “What do you think I should do to tell Taerae that he’s a bad news?”
“Let’s watch them for now, hopefully he’ll realize it himself. If not, you should tell him before they leave hyung… Since it’s pretty late at night.”
Gunwook agrees. Yujin is right, Taerae is a smart guy, he knows better.
While getting ready to close the shop, Gunwook keeps glancing over at them but the more time passes the bigger his worries grow. Unlike Taerae’s previous dates, he seems to be having a good time with Jinwoo. The words he heard through the grapevines was that he’s a pro manipulator. Gunwook can’t help but feel anxious. every laugh, every smile Taerae gives Jinwoo makes his stomach churn. He hopes that there will be a way for him to warn Taerae.
Gunwook makes his way over to the table area to clean up and to remind some people that they are closing in 20 minutes. Sure his hand is moving back and forth to wipe the table, but for the love of god his mind cannot focus at all. He wishes he could have the hearing ability of an elephant, because Jinwoo keeps whispering to Taerae. And for some reason, Gunwook feels like they’re talking about him. The way Taerae stares at him while Jinwoo is whispering something so close to Taerae’s ear is making Gunwook feel self conscious. Gunwook could only pray that Taerae will not fall for anything that comes out of that foul mouth.
“I need to go to the toilet…” Taerae suddenly stands up and leaves Jinwoo alone.
Finally a chance.
Gunwook drops his cleaning supplies to follow Taerae, but before Gunwook can catch up to him, Jinwoo suddenly blocks his path way.
“Where the fuck are you going?” Jinwoo’s face appears in front of Gunwook, painted with a smirk. Behind that irritating face, Gunwook catches a glimpse of Taerae’s back disappearing into the toilet. He missed his chance.
“Fuck off Jinwoo” Gunwook hisses, his anger is starting to build up.
“How about you mind your own business and continue to wipe and mop like a good boy. You shouldn’t disappoint your parents who gave you this place.” Jinwoo grabs the tablecloth that Gunwook left before and place it on Gunwook’s shoulder.
Gunwook’s jaw tightens, he swats away Jinwoo’s hand. “What’s your problem with me?”
“Nothing. I just don’t like people who have an easy life. Makes me want to ruin it.” Says Jinwoo with a straight face.
But Gunwook swears he saw a slight change in Jinwoo’s eyes, as if the devil whispered to him.
“You know what else I want to ruin?” says Jinwoo, scoffing with a sinister smile, “Kim Taerae. I’m gonna take him home tonight, fuck him so hard he screams my name, and then ruin him.”
Gunwook can’t take it anymore. His fist, which he has been clenching tightly for some time, flew into Jinwoo’s left jaw making him staggered and fall.
“HYUNG!” Yujin frantically gets out of the counter to the seating area where Gunwook is. He runs to stop Gunwook but compared to his frame, Gunwook is much larger and stronger Yujin couldn’t do much.
Gunwook still sees red, he doesn’t even realize his surroundings, not even Yujin who’s trying to push him away off Jinwoo. He could only see Jinwoo spitting blood onto the floor he just mopped—most likely from accidentally biting his tongue. Gunwook grabs Jinwoo by the collar and yanks him back to his feet.
“You disgusting piece of sh-” Gunwook’s sentence got cut after hearing a loud gasp from across the room.
“WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!”
Like a deflating balloon, Gunwook’s rage blows out into thin air the moment he hears Taerae’s voice. He lets go of Jinwoo’s collar, making him fall back onto the floor. Gunwook is sure he didn’t hit him that hard but Jinwoo suddenly groans, wailing in pain on the floor. Taerae who just got out of the toilet, rushes to Jinwoo’s side, checking his condition. Jinwoo still grimaces in pain, but Gunwook knows he’s faking it.
Taerae who’s crouching down beside Jinwoo, looks up towards Gunwook. “I didn’t think it was true, but I can’t believe you’re actually this violent!” said Taerae with a scared face.
Gunwook’s heart breaks into pieces mixed with disappointment. He just fell into Jinwoo’s trap. He wants to say no, but he can’t erase the fact that he just hit Jinwoo’s face.
“That guy was the one at fault here!” Yujin who is standing behind Gunwook decides to step forward to say something. Gunwook sighs pulls Yujin back until he stands right next to him. He will handle it himself.
“Taerae-ssi, I don’t know what he said to you, and you can decide who you want to believe. But I just want to say that I care about you, a lot… I have been, since the day you first came here. This guy… “ Gunwook points at Jinwoo, “I know him and he’s not a good guy. You really should be careful of him… I know you need someone to accompany you to your friend’s wedding but this guy is not the right person. You should stay far away from him.” Gunwook finally pours out everything he wanted to say. He could only pray that Taerae would believe him instead of Jinwoo.
Jinwoo suddenly groans, stealing Taerae’s attention back into him. “He hit me because he wants you. He suddenly went crazy because he’s jealous of me.”
Gunwook wants to shove the tablecloth in his hand into Jinwoo’s mouth just to shut that disgusting mouth of his. Since he couldn’t do that, Gunwook hands the table cloth to Yujin. “I’m done here, I can’t bear seeing this asshole anymore. Yujin-ah, help me close up for tonight. I have to go.” Gunwook pats Yujin’s shoulder, and Yujin nods. It’s not a huge favor, Yujin knows how to close up the cafe, he had done it a couple of times before. Plus Gunwook has done most of the tasks and there is a part-time worker who will help him finish up.
Gunwook stares at Taerae’s eyes one last time. With pleading eyes, he hopes that it will reach Taerae. “Be careful…”
Gunwook walks away, he quickly gathers everything he remembers into his bag before heading out. It was too much for him… His head hurts after the whole emotion roller coaster. His throat feels scratchy even though he doesn’t think that he raised his voice that much. His knuckle is starting to slightly throbs. Although Gunwook takes a couple of boxing classes but this is his barehand hitting a bone. He guesses there might be a slight bruise appearing tomorrow. But at least he knows that asshole will have a bigger bruise tomorrow on his face.
Gunwook thought he was going to die.
He didn’t expect he’d wake up drenched in sweat on Thursday morning. His whole body was on fire, his muscles felt sore, his head was pounding, his throat felt like it was swollen shut. It was absolutely horrible. Gunwook couldn’t even remember the last time he’d been sick. He had been busy working nonstop he didn’t even realize his body was fighting the virus inside. After that incident on Wednesday, Gunwook’s body must’ve gave up and released all the flu symptoms all at once.
He blames it on the sudden change in weather. Just a little over a week ago, it felt like Seoul was still at the peak of the summer. But this week the temperature dropped all of a sudden. Living alone and getting sick is honestly the worst. Gunwook had to wobble outside by himself to go to the pharmacy, good thing it’s not too far from his apartment building. Too weak to cook, he ordered food through a delivery service. The first two days were miserable, but by the third day, Gunwook finally started to feel like himself again. The symptoms are almost gone by today.
The cafe was entrusted to a part time worker Gunwook has worked with for a long time, along with Yujin who usually helps out at night. He felt guilty for making them cover the job he’s supposed to do, but there was no way he could go to work in his current condition. He had planned to return today, but he decided not to. He wanted to give himself one more day to fully recover and make sure he wouldn’t risk spreading the flu to anyone.
It’s Saturday night, feeling much better Gunwook decided to catch up on the netflix series he wanted to finish but never had the time to. It feels nice to finally have a break, though he was forced into it, rather than deciding to take one for himself. Gunwook lies on his sofa, watching the TV. Sure both of his eyes are on the show, but the information never quite makes it to his brain. Because instead of paying attention, Gunwook keeps thinking about what will happen tomorrow to Taerae. The wedding is tomorrow, Gunwook wonders if he’s going with Jinwoo or is he going without a plus one. Gunwook prays that it’s the latter. The good news, though, is that, based on what Yujin told him yesterday, for the past two days Jinwoo never came back to the cafe.
Gunwook tries to focus on the show, hoping it will distract him from his thoughts. But just as he’s about to rewind the part he missed, the sound of his apartment door beeping signals that the door lock password has been entered. The only person who knows the password is Yujin, so Gunwook doesn’t even bother to check.
“Hyung, congratulations!” Yujin enters and quickly makes his way toward Gunwook in the living room, with wide smile painted on his face.
“Did you clean the cafe properly, I’m coming back tomorrow it better be squeaky clean!”
“Duh of course, but you won’t be coming to work tomorrow!!!” Yujin’s smile becomes wider, he looks like an excited bunny jumping in tiny.
“I’m fine now, I’ll go back to work tomorrow.” Gunwook tries to reassure Yujin.
“Nope, you’re going to the wedding tomorrow with Taerae-ssi!” Yujin hands out a black envelope with some golden and silver text on it. Gunwook’s brows furrowed, still couldn’t believe what Yujin said. But indeed the names of Taerae’s friends are written on it.
“Where did you get this?” Gunwook who is laying down on the sofa sits up straight after realizing that this is legit.
“Taerae-ssi came today, and he asked me a favor to give this to you. He said and I quote, I would be so grateful if he could come and accompany me to this wedding.” Yujin repeats what Taerae said to him, mimicking his voice.
“Whoa whoa wait, did you do this? Did you ask him to?!” Gunwook slightly panics just like before with the napkin incident.
“Well… No, I didn’t directly ask him to invite you to the wedding…” Yujin throws his bag onto the side and then sits on the sofa right next to Gunwook. “…But I had to let Taerae-ssi know what actually happened that night. So I showed him our CCTV recording from the moment that guy ordered drinks until the fight. Good thing the audio picked up some parts of what he said too.”
Taerae came to the cafe on Thursday, the day after the incident, said he was looking for Gunwook. Yujin then took that chance to show Taerae the CCTV footage. On Friday, Taerae came again, but since Gunwook still didn’t come to work he left right away. And lastly today, Taerae came back again to the cafe and gave Yujin the invitation.
Gunwook stares at the invitation in his hand. Of course he’s elated, but his mind still wonders why would Taerae invite him all of a sudden. But honestly, even if Gunwook is Taerae’s last resort he’s fine with it.
“Go, hyung…”
“I gotta find where I put my suit…”
Gunwook shuts the door of the jeep he drove to get to the wedding. The venue is a bit outside of Seoul. You can’t find a garden this beautiful in the city. The weather is perfect too, not too hot, not too cold, with colorful leaves gently falling down. It finally smells like autumn. Gunwook adjusts his hair and suit through the reflection in the car window. He’s wearing a dark navy suit, fully monochrome with same colored shirt and pants, and a black shoes. Looking around, he starts to get a little more nervous because he could see people around him arriving. Gunwook doesn’t know all the well known influencers or celebrities that exist but the people who arrives definitely looks familiar, he just doesn’t know who’s who.
He hasn’t told Taerae that he’s coming, he doesn’t have the access to. So, Gunwook could only hope that it won’t be too long before he finds Taerae. He walks up to the wedding usher and hands over his invitation.
“Thank you sir, we have confirmed your invitation. Welcome.”
“Excuse me, do you know if Kim Taerae-ssi has arrived yet or not?” Gunwook asks hesitantly.
“Oh yes, he’s already inside.”
Gunwook exhaled in relieve. He thanked the usher and entered the ceremony area. Indeed it’s very beautiful. But oh…
Gunwook spots a certain person who he thinks is more beautiful than all of the flowers here.
Taerae looks surprised once he sees Gunwook at the entrance, his eyes widen.Gunwook finds it cute, the way Taerae’s eyes becomes so round like bobas. But on the contrary, the way he styles his hair makes Gunwook’s legs weak. He puts some part of his bangs up, exposing his forehead. How does he look so handsome, so cool, but also cute at the same time? Taerae strides towards Gunwook with a quick pace, a wide smile lighting up his face.
He’s even more handsome up close.
“You came!”
“I’m here…” There’s a part of him that still feels awkward with Taerae, especially after their last meeting went awful. He doesn’t know how to act around him.
“Heard you were sick, are you feeling better now?” Thankfully Taerae seems to act just like how he is normally.
“Yeah, I’m all good now… but… are you sure that it’s alright for me to be here?” Gunwook still feels out of place, because it’s a wedding of a couple he doesn’t know personally, and his only link to them is Taerae. He thought about this on the way here, what if someone ask who he is? It doesn’t feel correct to say that he’s Taerae’s friend, but to say that he’s Taerae’s barista would be even weirder.
“Of course! You must be confused why I suddenly invited you. I’ll tell you later during the reception. Now I have to go take care of my duties first, I’ll take you to your seat!” said Taerae. He grabs Gunwook’s arm to lead him to his designated seat.
“You can stay here!” Taerae had to increase his voice because they suddenly checks the microphones and speakers for the wedding. Taerae decides to lean in closer to Gunwook, so he doesn't have to scream. “I promise I’ll be with you once the ceremony is done.” Taerae whispers on Gunwook’s ear. He pulls back, showing the sweetest smile on his face. Taerae pats Gunwook on the shoulder and walks away, leaving him stunned and frozen in his seat.
Gunwook ends up sitting alone to watch the ceremony because Taerae is standing at the front as the best man.
Oh his foolish heart does the utmost for even the smallest gestures.
“Hey, I still need to help Hao hyung before the reception starts… Will you come with me? I think it’s better than being here alone with people you don’t know.”
The ceremony is over, and the cocktail hour begins. Gunwook nods, accepting Taerae’s suggestion to follow him. He really doesn’t want to feel awkward, standing alone in the middle of all these people. So he decides to go along with Taerae to the preparation room where the grooms are taking a break.
As soon as they enters the room, Hao welcomes them with a whine.
“Taerae-yaaaaaa…”
“Hyung, congratulations finally you’re officially married!”
“Come hug me I need you to transfer me your extroverted energy… How am I gonna survive the whole reception…”
Taerae laughs and hugs Hao. As hao places his chin on Taerae’s shoulder, he finally notices that there is a person behind Taerae. Hao looks straight at Gunwook and gives him a big smile.
“OH! You finally followed my words and invited him! I told you he likes you!”
“HYUNG! It’s not like that… He’s just-”
“No, he’s right. I do.” Gunwook cuts Taerae, he has decided to be bold today. After watching Taerae throughout the ceremony, looking that good, Gunwook knows he definitely can’t let him slip away.
"I knew it!" Hao exclaims, clearly excited. Taerae looks surprised, but Gunwook notices the faint curve at the corner of his lips. It seems like a good sign.
“Now, come meet my husband… Uh sorry what’s your name?”
“Gunwook, Park Gunwook.”
Feeling called, Hao’s husband who just came out of the bathroom approaches them.
“Here he is… Gunwook-ssi this is my husband Hanbin, and baby this is Taerae’s… future boyfriend, Park Gunwook-ssi.”
Both Gunwook and Taerae are stunned, but Gunwook definitely isn’t going to deny it. It made him more excited when he realizes Taerae didn’t say anything as well. He shakes Hanbin’s hands.
“You look familiar…” Says Hanbin.
Gunwook nods, he actually has seen Hanbin before. “You’ve worked with my father before.”
“Did I? Did I help to build or renovate your house?” Hanbin asks. Gunwook remembers he was the architect his parents has worked with before.
“Do you remember, you worked on a building in Pangyo for Park Kiwook? I heard people say that I am the splitting image of my father, maybe that’s why you think I look familiar?”
“Wow…. You’re Park Kiwook’s son? Taerae-ya, where do you find this guy…” Hanbin nods in respect. Meanwhile both Hao and Taerae looks confused.
“What are you talking about… You’re not… just a barista?” Taerae asks with a lost face which Gunwook finds cute, he couldn’t contain his smile.
“I am a barista… My parents own the cafe, I help them manage it.”
“Probably one of hundreds properties that your parents own, right?” Hanbin added.
“You’re exaggerating.” Gunwook responded. He doesn’t think his parents owned hundreds of properties, but to be honest he doesn’t have the exact number on top of his head too.
“Oh you two need to google his father…” says Hanbin to Hao and Taerae who are still looking confused.
Gunwook’s family owns a lot of properties all over Korea. He knows for sure that this kind of the business is usually inherited, but also he knows that his parents are very good at expanding it. They buy, sell, flips, all sorts of properties, probably doubling what they originally owned. It’s all the result of their hard work, built on top of their privileges. So Gunwook, even though he does have these privileges as well, wants to make a name for himself. He rarely introduces himself as Park Kiwook’s son, but this is one of those situations that’s unavoidable.
After that encounter, he let Taerae do his thing to help the newlyweds go through photo shoots, outfit changes, touch-ups and more. Seeing him going through all these things, he must have been busy for the all week too. On top of everything trying to find a plus one with a time crunch. Poor guy ended up meeting all those horrible people.
“Sorry to make you wait. I’m done, let’s go out to eat I’m starving!” Taerae approaches Gunwook who is sitting in a bench, been watching from the side.
“Me too, let’s go future boyfriend.” Gunwook teases him, making Taerae gasps and hits his upper arm. They walk together toward the reception area, but for some reason, Taerae becomes quiet. Unlike before, he seemed to be leading the conversation, while now he doesn’t say anything.
“Are you tired?” Gunwook asks.
“A little, but I’m okay. Just had something in mind…” Taerae words trailing off as if there's more he wants to say but holds back.
“Care to tell me?”
Taerae walks slower, seems to be considering something inside. “Were you… just… joking before?”
“Which part?”
“The part where you said you like me? And… the rest of it.”
Gunwook chuckles, he stops walking just to softly stares at Taerae’s eyes. “I’m surprised you never realized… I like you, and have been since a while ago. But I get it, I never tried to show you my feelings since you had a boyfriend.”
Gunwook notices how Taerae's ears gradually turn red, followed by a blush spreading across his cheeks and nose. Taerae doesn’t say anything but with ears as red as that he must be going through a lot inside.
Gunwook likes it, he enjoys this so much, making Taerae flustered is fun. So without any second thoughts, he slips in his hand on Taerae’s hand, and intertwines their fingers.
“So, do I pass as your future boyfriend?”
Taerae clutches Gunwook’s hand, but his eyes drift nervously, avoiding Gunwook’s gaze
“You already pass even when you were only Gunwook-ssi the barista in my favorite cafe.”
“My cafe is your favorite?”
“The fact that I came almost everyday wasn’t a hint enough? I didn’t even know that you own it.”
“I don’t, it’s my parents’.”
“Mhm sure…” Taerae nods, there’s a slight sarcastic tone that Gunwook couldn’t help but notice. ”Ah by the way, sorry about the other day. I made a scene at your… your parent’s cafe… and thank you for warning me of that guy.”
Gunwook stifles a laugh, it seems funny now that he thinks about it again. “Yeah, you brought in some weirdos…”
“I know right, but honestly it was all worth it if that was what I had to go through to be here with you.”
Now it’s Gunwook’s turn to feel flustered. He finds himself at a loss for words, unable to respond to what Taerae just said.
“I always think that you’re handsome, even when you only wore your glasses and your hoodie. I was surprised that day you changed your style, I thought you just came back from a date or something.” Taerae laughs.
“You noticed?”
“Of course, my barista turns out to be hot? I think the whole neighborhood noticed.”
Gunwook smiles, he likes the sound of that, my barista. “It was because of you, I had to get your attention somehow.”
Taerae giggles, “You definitely did.”
They finally arrived at the reception area, a lot of people are already mingling, chatting, and drinking. They found their seats at the table assigned for the groomsmen.
“Taerae-ya… It’s been a while, how are you?”
Gunwook sees the way Taerae rolls his eyes before looking at the person who called him.
“Yes, been a while Hyunwoo.” says Taerae with a fake smile.
“Heard you broke up, who did you come with today? You know I come with CEO Lee right?”
Ah, Gunwook figured out who this guy is. He must be the guy Taerae mentioned at the cafe, the one who loves to brag.
“I’m just here with my date.”
Gunwook can sense that Taerae doesn't want to engage in a conversation with him.
“Is he an influencer too? I don’t think i’ve seen him before…” Hyunwook scoffs.
Gunwook doesn’t know him at all, but from the way he talks to Taerae, Gunwook already hates him. He briefly considers of the best way to introduce himself so that this guy would stop yapping. He really doesn’t like to bring his family background in such conversation but if it could make Taerae feel better, he’ll do it. But before Gunwook could say anything Taerae already introduces him.
“No, Hyunwoo, he’s not. He’s a barista, he makes the best coffee you could ever taste and he bakes amazing desserts too.” Taerae’s answers surprised Gunwook.
“What? A barista???” Hyunwoo laughs, even his laugh is very annoying.
“He is, the best one… By the way you should go take a seat now, the grooms are coming soon.”
Taerae turns and walks away as soon as he finished speaking, cutting off any chance for Hyunwoo to respond. Gunwook follows him to their seat, quietly impressed by how Taerae maintained his composure.
Calmly sitting down, Taerae sighs, “Sorry you have to see that.”
“It's okay, I’m glad we did. I’m surprised that you introduced me as the best barista.” Gunwook smirks.
“I’m trying to gatekeep you.”
“So you weren’t serious about my coffee being the best you could ever taste?”
“Of course I was, I woudn’t lie about that. I love your coffee the most, it’s always perfect. I just… simply kept some information about you a secret.”
Getting praises on his coffee is Gunwook’s weak point. Oh he could do anything for this guy if he asks for it. Gunwook leans in towards Taerae, making sure no one else could hear him as he whispers his words.
“How about I make you one, first thing in the morning tomorrow?”
Taerae pulls back his head slightly to stare into Gunwook’s eyes. “At your place?”
“Sure.”
Gunwook wishes this wedding ends as soon as possible.
