✦

June 27th

      Dear Edmund,

I hope you are well in my abscence, I am truly sorry I have been gone for so long- mediating the border dispute has been taking longer than I previously expected. I should be able to return back home soon- with plenty of time to spare before Sir Hutchinson’s retirement party, I wouldn’t want to miss that.

Your mother told me you were willing to open the summer carnival again, and I am so proud of you! I know the past few years have been extremely challenging and difficult for you and I am so happy you feel secure enough to continue this- but if you have second thoughts and back out, I won’t be upset or dissapointed- I’ll be even prouder of you for standing up for yourself.

I hope I can return home soon. I miss you so much, young star, I look in the sky every night for Polaris.. it reminds me of you.

I hope you have great fun at the festival and stay safe- and please give my warmest regards to Sir Hutchinson and his team. I love you Eddie

The letter sat open on Edmund’s desk, surrounded by several drafts of a reply and illuminated by the moonlight streaming in from the open curtains.

Edmund himself sat curled up on the bay window seat, looking through the window and up at the night sky. An old tome and a notebook sat next to him and a blanket was around his shoulders. He rested his head against the window paynes, sighing softly and contentedly.

It took a few seconds of searching before he saw it, taking out a brass spyglass, flicking the cover from the lens as he expanded it, putting it to his left eye to look more closely.

The North Star was glowing brightly that night and he smiled to himself as it came into sharper focus through the lenses of his spyglass.

Edmund stared at it for a few minutes longer before pushing his spyglass down to a compact cylinder, recovering the lens. He ran his thumb over a small engraving along the edge of the metal, not needing to look away from the stars at the words to know what it said.

He got up, setting his books on his desk and cleaning the eyepiece on his sleep skirt before placing it in its case and going to his bed. The prince reached for a small solar system model on his nightstand, taking a small key and instering it into the keyhole at the base, slowly winding it up.

The mechanism clicked and whirred and the planets started moving slowly, a music box inside playing a quiet song.

Edmund buried himself under the covers and watched the planets move, listening to the music as his eyes slowly drifted closed.
