Chapter 1: Gingerbread cookies and a wedding ring.

Chapter Text

The holiday season had already started. Christmas was just around the corner.

Cookies were being baked, gifts were being wrapped, and most of all, Rio Vidal was busy not caring a damn thing about it because she hated intensely.
That still stood nearly about everything, but less and less as she got to spend almost every single holiday with the charismatic and sassy brown-haired witch that stole her black heart.

Agatha Harkness, or Vidal… Harkness or Vidal?

That was what occupied her mind for the past few days. She wanted Agatha to be her wife so bad.

She was the personification of death herself, you would think nothing at all could scare her, yet she was hopelessly smitten and down bad for Agatha that she didn’t know how to bring up that up in a conversation. She was scared of being rejected by the love of her life.

Did Agatha want to get married? She never talked about such things.. Did she like it? Did she hate it?

Rio kept thinking and thinking and thinking, and then she got an idea.

She was gonna wrap the ring box as a Christmas present for Agatha.

Or maybe not. Maybe a second present.

Rio was panicking so intensely as she run to the store to get the ingredients that her girlfriend had requested early that morning because she really wanted to bake gingerbread cookies. Rio’s favorites.

She was already blushing at that thought.

She skimmed the list. Eggs, baking soda, cinnamon, ground ginger, almond milk and..
And..

She furrowed her brows, scrunched her nose and rolled her eyes at Agatha’s incomprehensible handwriting.

She loved Agatha, so much.. but that handwriting was terrible.

She reached for her phone in her pocket and dialed Agatha’s number.

The phone seemed to ring forever, but it was finally picked up by the witch.

“Agatha-” said Rio, clearly annoyed after waiting forever for her girlfriend to pick up.

“Yes, my love.. I’m sorry, I was hovering.” Agatha mumbled, sounding tired and a little guilty for taking so long.

“Since when do you hover?” Rio asked in a suspicious tone.

“Since when Lilia basically invited the whole coven at our place for Christmas, tomorrow."

“She did WHAT??” Rio was a bit too loud now.

“I know, baby, I tried to object, but she started rumbling nonsense and then hung up.”

Rio’s mind immediately jumped to the proposal she had in mind. There was no way she was doing that in front of the whole annoying coven. Oh hell no. She wanted Agatha and herself to be alone in their cozy little bubble.

She loudly frowned and panicked. . Her thoughts and fears spiraled so intensely in that moment that she completely tuned out Agatha calling her name.

“Hello? Sweetheart, is everything okay? What was that you needed?

“Oh yeah, yeah, I’m okay. I just wanted to know what you wrote after almond milk.. I just sent you the list picture.”

“Oh- It’s Molasses”

“Mo- what? Sweetheart, your handwriting is already incomprehensible, don’t start talking weird too, please.”

“It’s a sweetener, baby! M-O-L-A-S-S-E-S.”

“Oh well alright, you’re safe. I was thinking of breaking up with you and setting you up with that gardening lady.”

“Why on earth would I wanna date Mrs Hart?”

“You’re always so sweet with her, c’monnn” She laughed, she loved to tease Agatha.

“I think she’d be really good for you instead, you’ve both got the green thumb.”

“Okay, okay, I’ll think about it then” She laughed again.

“Thank you for the Molossss”

“Molasses”

“Byee- Agathaaaa!!”

Rio hangs up the phone.

Think Rio, think. She kept repeating to herself.

She couldn’t come up with anything but proposing that same night. She immediately started feeling the kind of rush you sense when your teenage girl crush tells you she likes you back.

Rio was gonna do it. She took a deep breath and rushed to collect all that she needed for those cookies.

She almost dropped the eggs while packing the groceries because, now that she was so sure about proposing she was also terrified that Agatha might say no.
When she finally got back, she entered their nest carrying the bags over to the kitchen counter.

“Agatha, I’m back”

“Heyyy, baby!”

“Hi” Rio replied, sighing but smiling at the same time.

The couple shared a quick yet sweet kiss on the lips.

Then Rio said “Mhh, I’ve got your Christmas present all set to go under the tree!!”

“Ohhh wow!! I wonder what it is. Huge box. Definitely something heavy… actually, maybe not so heavy.” Said Agatha as she motioned to put the present under the Christmas tree.

“I’m so not telling you what it is, Sherlock.”

“Alright, worth a try. Let’s get the baking started!”

“I’ll be right back, just need to wash my hands.”

In the bathroom, Rio slipped her hand into the pocket of her black trousers and pulled out the ring, staring at it for a few moments. She just needed to trust her gut and propose when the moment felt right.
Thank god the box wasn’t huge. She slipped it back into her pocket, hoping Agatha wouldn’t notice.

“Here you are!” said Agatha grinning. “Add flour, brown sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and salt to a mixing bowl, and mix,” Agatha instructed, looking over at Rio.

“Wo, wo, wo, wo, slow down, Harkness. Do I look like a trained chef to you? I’ve already forgotten everything.”

Agatha chuckled at her girlfriend’s humor. “Okay, okay, let’s do this step by step, alright?”

“Sounds good to me!!” Rio replied in a sassy tone, making her response obvious.

“Pass me the flour.”

“Not until you say the magic word.”

“What?”

Rio looked up at Agatha with her best puppy eyes.

“Oh…” She chuckled, a hint of impatience in her voice this time. “Please?”

“Good girl,” she said, reaching out to kiss Agatha, stretching her arms to pass her the flour at the same time.

Agatha stepped back, not giving her girlfriend the kiss she’d hoped for, but instead throwing flour at her.

“Ohhh!” Rio gasped. She was silent for a minute, then she said, “It’s a war. It’s a war!” as she grabbed a pinch of flour.

“No, no! Rio, I’m sorry, NO!” Agatha pleaded, staying still and hoping her puppy eyes would make a difference.

And then, boom, Rio shot the flour right back at Agatha.

When she tried to run away, Agatha scooped up the flour, grabbed a handful, and screamed, “You’re gonna lose, Vidal!”

But as soon as she said that, Rio tripped on the carpet.

“Damnn... you. I know you like to play dirty, but...”

Agatha chuckled and offered her now-hurting girlfriend a hand.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart. Here, let me give you a hand.”

Rio pretended to get up, then dropped down on one knee, opening the box she’d pulled from her pocket.

“Oh my God,” she said, her voice wavering.

“Oh my God. What are you doing?”

“Agatha Harkness, listen to me very carefully, ‘cause I’m probably panicking way too much, and I might be starting to speak very fast because of that, but...” She paused to slow down and take a breath.
“I, as Death, have never experienced such a burning sensation of life inside of me. Whenever I hold you, whenever I kiss you, and whenever we make love, I feel like I am alive myself. Not only did you teach me that, but you also taught me what love means. You made me feel able to live and to love. I love you, Agatha. I love you, I love you, I love y—”

Rio was interrupted by a sobbing Agatha who cupped Rio’s face and lifted her from her kneeling position.

Their lips finally met. Rio’s face was now wet from Agatha’s tears, and probably her own, too.

“W-wait, my love, I still haven’t asked the question.”

“Yes.”

Rio chuckled at her girlfriend’s impatience. “Agatha, will you marry me?”

“Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.”

Rio put the ring on Agatha’s finger, and they began kissing again.

After a couple of minutes of crying mixed with making out, the fiancées lay on their cozy couch.

“Wow... this is beautifuuul, Rio. I don’t know what to say…”

“I wasn’t sure if you wanted to get married or—” Rio decided to be honest with her soon-to-be wife.

“Baby, I would’ve said yes if you proposed with a string tied around my finger, or no ring at all. And to be frankly honest, it wasn’t the ring that got me. It was your proposal, the way you said it, that really struck me.”

“I love you,” said Agatha one more time before kissing her again.

They sat in silence for a moment, their foreheads pressed together.

Suddenly, Agatha broke the quiet. “So... should we start drafting invitations for the entire coven? Or should we leave Lilia out for nearly ruining this magical moment?”

Rio groaned, burying her face in Agatha’s shoulder. “Don’t even get me started on Lilia.”

Agatha watched Rio’s expression change from a relaxed one into a pondering one.

"Agatha..." Rio looked at Agatha so intensely that she began to remember they were supposed to be making gingerbread cookies.

Agatha blinked, her eyes widening as she snapped out of the moment. “OHHH MY GOD, the flour!” She glanced around at the mess they’d made, and Rio’s half-smirk turned into a full-blown laugh.

“We better clean this mess up.” Agatha said as she got up in a rush, looking for the nearest cloth.

“Well, if we're making cookies tomorrow, we might as well do it right. And without the flour bomb going off again.” Rio observed.

"I'll tell you something: no flour bombs, but lots of kisses in between the cookie-making," Agatha said.

"Deal!" Rio cheered.
