Work Text:

“Hey.”

Robbie looks up at Amadeus like he is annoying him even though Amadeus just entered the room and hasn’t so much as said a word to him today. Amadeus crosses his arms like he’s trying to gather his thoughts. Finally, he completes his first thought, “Herc’s coming to visit.”

“Okay?” Robbie wishes that his boyfriend would get on with it. But that’s not Amadeus’s way. He needs to get around to what he wants to say. It’s like a build up every conversation Robbie has ever had with him. He doesn’t understand why he isn’t more direct.

“I was going to meet up with him,” Amadeus says. Not the whole thought though. He’s got more, Robbie can tell.

“Okay?” Robbie repeats. He stops himself from saying something sarcastic like if he wanted a day off of being his boyfriend to go see him.

“I was wondering if you wanted to come with,” Amadeus says, “Meet him maybe…”

About fucking time. Why couldn’t that have all been at one time? No Robbie had to jab for more after each individual blirb.

“I’ve met Hercules,” Robbie says.

Amadeus sighs. “Not…” He starts over. His brow furrows like he thinks Robbie is being purposely obtuse. “I know we’re not that serious, but Herc means a lot to me. If you’re not ready for me to introduce you… Look if you’re not ready it’s okay, but I just thought…”

“Not ready?” Robbie asks.

Amadeus shrugs, which does not answer Robbie’s question to his annoyance. “I don’t know… Herc is important to me.”

“I know that,” Robbie says, “Does he want to meet me or something?”

“I haven’t told you about him,” Amadeus admits.

Robbie frowns. What the fuck is he talking about him? Herc knows who he is. Amadeus shouldn’t have had to mention anything about him.

“If you don’t want to meet him, that’s fine,” Amadeus says, kinda defeated.

It’s always odd to see his giant of a boyfriend curl in on himself when something disappoints him, but if it means Amadeus is done with his weird tell him one piece of information at a time thing…

“Okay?”

“Okay,” Amadeus says, crossing his arms and leans against the wall for a few moments before stalking out of the room.

Robbie might not be the smart one of them, but he knows Amadeus is upset. He said it was okay if Robbie didn’t want to meet him, and Robbie’s already met Hercules. It was brief, but they knew who the other was. He thinks it would be a bit redundant to have Amadeus introduce them again. Why was he upset? Unless Amadeus wants to introduce him to Hercules for a specific reason…

Fuck.

Robbie stands up and goes to find Amadeus. He’s pouting on the couch. Well, pouting is a little strong. He’s staring at his phone with a deep frown on his face.

“Hey.”

Amadeus doesn’t look up at him. He’s really pissed.

“Did you mean that you wanted to introduce me to Herc as your boyfriend?” Robbie asks.

Amadeus puts his phone down in his lap and groans. “Yes.”

“Why didn’t you just say that?”

“I-” Amadeus groans again, “I thought I was being very clear.”

“You never get to the point,” Robbie says.

“I asked you-” Amadeus stops himself from saying anything actually mean. “I guess I don’t.”

Robbie narrows his eyes. Amadeus is being weirdly not argumentative. Normally this would be a whole fight. Maybe he’s growing.

“We cool?” Robbie asks.

Amadeus shrugs. “Yeah, we’re cool.”

Robbie crosses his arms this time. He’s still mad. “Can you just say what you mean?”

Amadeus snaps to look at him. He stands up and walks out of the room. Robbie follows after him with the idea in his head that he’s going to keep arguing with Amadeus, but Amadeus whips around with tears in his eyes.

“I’m trying so hard not to push you to do anything you’re not comfortable with, and maybe I’m not being super clear because I’m-” Amadeus squares his jaw. “I just want to know if you are okay with me introducing you to Herc as my boyfriend.”

“You can,” Robbie says.

“Do you want to meet him?” Amadeus asks.

“I’ve already-”

“Not like this. Not with me,” Amadeus says.

“Okay, sorry.”

“You’re doing that thing again,” Amadeus says, “The thing you do when you think I’m being unreasonable, but you don’t want to make me more upset.”

“I don’t understand why meeting Herc is so important to you.”

“He’s my best friend,” Amadeus says.

“You didn’t act like this when I met Cindy,” Robbie objects.

“Herc’s different.”

“You’re acting like you want to introduce me to your parents,” Robbie says, almost flippantly.

Amadeus makes a frustrated noise. “Yeah, it’s like that!” he exclaims, “Herc’s the most important person in my life. I want him to like you! I want him to know you. I don’t get why you are getting annoyed at me for wanting to introduce you to him…” He runs out of steam at the end, getting more and more quiet. It finally loads in for Robbie that Amadeus is being vulnerable, and Robbie knows that he really fucked up.

Robbie reaches out to touch Amadeus’s cheeks and he reels away and turns around. Being a giant kid, but Robbie knows he always does this when he’s upset.

“I didn’t realize,” Robbie says.

“I thought I was making it clear,” Amadeus repeats.

“I’m as dense as you about stuff like this,” Robbie says, “Look at me please.”

Amadeus turns to look at him. He’s got tears in his eyes.

“I want to meet Herc if it’s that important to you,” Robbie says.

Amadeus wipes his eyes. “I’m scared you’re just saying this to make me feel better,” he says, “I don’t want to pressure you.”

“You’re not,” Robbie assures him, “I don’t do things that I don’t want to.”

Amadeus wipes more tears and nods. “I wish you weren’t such a jerk,” he says.

“I wish that too,” Robbie says.
