Work Text:

“Hey Luke,” Han leaned into the doorway of the bunk space where Luke was laying on the deck, staring up at the deckhead, “you alright there bud?”

“Huh? Yeah, fine.” Luke said, scrubbing a hand across his face and sitting up. “Something you wanted?”

“Just wanted to let you know that there’s mulled wine if you want it.”

“Mulled wine?” The promise of something new always seemed to be enough to get Luke up and off the floor. “What’s that?”

“Corellian holiday drink.” Han said, trying for flippant. It wasn’t very often that he got to think about his birth-planet in a positive light, but if Luke dug too deep they’d swing back around to dark again. “You’ll like it, warms you right up.”

The kid was always too cold, whether they were in space or planetside. Han wasn’t sure why he’d noticed, but he had.

“Thanks.” With the Force-banthashit Luke could probably tell that Han’s feelings were all over the place, but his thanks was sincere enough.

Han steered Luke into the galley with an arm around his shoulder. Leia and Chewie had arrived in the interim and were playing yet another game of dejarik at the holotable. A whole crew of insomniacs the lot of them.

“Either of you want a drink?” Han asked, starting to grab mugs out of the cupboard. He got affirmatives, and set the four mugs down on the counter.

He had handed out the mugs and they were settled around the holotable for a game of Rummy-tiles, one of the few they could all agree on. There, nestled in the heart of his ship, away from the cold blur of hyperspace, life blooming properly for the first time in years with the addition of Luke and Leia, Han felt warm.

Notes:

Rummy-tiles is a space version of Rummikub because apparently I like to put tile games in space. Also, there is apparently a drink called Rummy Tonic , which implies both the existence of rum and of tonic water (and thus potentially malaria? the implications of throwaway lines can be fascinating), so I think I can safely preserve rummy as part of the title. And I can do what I want anyways.
