Joss doesn't have his temper, and hasn't inherited that blind rage that could cause him to kill with no warning. Jake was grateful for that. But the drugs, those are Jake's fault. Joss was struggling to deal with having a murder for a dad, struggling with the fact that Jake killed his mum. His brain was so addled he no longer knew what was true whether Jake had killed Wicklow or Eve had.
Joss's adoptive parents want him to stay away, they rightfully blame him. Eve kept trying to comfort him, reassure him it wasn't his fault. That not everything wrong in people's lives was on him.
“Joss has made his own choices,” Eve whispered in the dark, head resting on his shoulder. “So have I. You didn't do any of this.”
“If I hadn't killed my wife and her lover, Joss would have been raised by me. I never would have met Wicklow. He never would have taken the interest in you that he did. Things would be so very different. We both know that.” Jake answered with a loud deep sigh. It isn't that he doesn't love his life with Eve, he does. But all the suffering that has happened that has led them to that life, he wished he could wash away.
“Is it selfish that I wouldn't change anything?” Eve murmured, placing a soft kiss on the nape of his neck. “If none of those things had happened we wouldn't be together.”
