Black Hole Fantasy

Summary:

Aren't you tired of going through the motions?
Is the daily grind meant to dull the mind?
I sense a window somewhere closing
Somewhere in the world that I just have to find.

Mumbo sits at his desk, blueprints for an engineering project he want to try out, in front of him.

He sighs, erasing a line and redrawing it for what has to be the tenth time in the last two minuets.

The black haired man looks out the window into the night sky, a warm summer breeze blowing in through the open window.

He feels like something is missing in his life, a window closing he just will have to find, but can't.

or, a 'Black Hole Fantasy' -by the Crane Wives, songfic ft; Mumbo and Grian

Notes:

I though of this the first time I listened to Black Hole Fantasy.

Every time I hear it I think of this (or myself finally getting the person I love).

Enjoy!

Work Text:

Aren't you tired of going through the motions?
Is the daily grind meant to dull the mind?
I sense a window somewhere closing
Somewhere in the world that I just have to find

Mumbo sits at his desk, blueprints for an engineering project he want to try out, in front of him.

He sighs, erasing a line and redrawing it for what has to be the tenth time in the last two minuets.

The black haired man looks out the window into the night sky, a warm summer breeze blowing in through the open window.

He feels like something is missing in his life, a window closing he just will have to find, but can't.

He sighs, standing up and shutting his window before crawling into bed and shutting off the light, plunging his room into mostly darkness, with a little bit of moon light coming through the now closed window.

The days blur together
I watch the ceiling buckle
The walls are closing in
There's a black hole in the living room floor
I keep trying to ignore
But it's growing

He stares at his bedroom floor, imagining a black hole in it, slowly growing.

He turns so he faces the wall, his bed feeling cold and empty, but he does not understand why.

If love is just a chemical reaction
Is there a pill to take?
Something to quell this ache?

Mumbo thinks he know what he is missing.

It's Grian, his best friend he has had a crush on since high school.

Sometimes Mumbo wishes he could just take a pill to quell the ache in his chest for Grian.

Is this the real thing or a distraction?
Is it worth the risk?
My life would detonate

Sometimes Mumbo wonders if he really has a crush on Grian, or if it's his mind trying to come up with a distraction from his lonely life.

Is it worth the risk to ask Grian if he feels the same?

Mumbo feels like his life wold detonate if he asked, his heart breaching in his chest.

The weeks blur together
I watch the ceiling buckle
The walls are closing in
There's a black hole in the living room floor
I keep trying to ignore
But it's growing

Mumbo lies in his bed, imaging the black hole, sucking him up.

He turns over, facing the wall.

He falls asleep, dreaming of finally confessing to Grian.

I'm on my way to your house, I can't wait anymore
I'm pulling in the driveway
I'm standing on your porch
My knuckles hesitate an inch away from the door
What happens when it opens?

Even in my fantasy, I can't commit to believing
That I'll get what I want
I'm afraid of what I want

Even in my fantasy, I keep the car running
In case I need to take off

Mumbo drives, his car moving to a place he has been before.

He feels life his heart will burst in his chest at any moment.

He pulls into Grian's driveway.

Mumbo blinks and he is standing on Grian's porch.

He lifts his fist to knock, but finds his knuckles hesitating an inch away from the wooden door.

What happens when Grian opens it?

What will he say?

What will he thing?

He does not believe Grian will love him back.

He is afraid of what he wants, how it will ruin his friendship.

Mumbo looks back and see that his car is still running.

Even in his dreams he leaves the car running in case he needs to take off.

The months blur together
I watch the ceiling buckle
I wonder when it's caving in
There's a black hole in the living room floor
I keep standing on the edge and looking in

And on the other side is another life
A version of me with a spark in her eyes that I don't have
And now she's laughing
And it's killing me that I cannot see what's making her laugh
From where I'm standing
And I have to know, so I'm going in
I'm going in
Let's try this again

Mumbo feels like the past few months have all blurred together.

He has watched the metaphorical 'black hole' grow and grow, ignoring it until now.

He stands up, walking up to it, looking in.

And Mumbo sees on the other side is another life with a version of him with a spark in his eyes that he doesn't have.

Now the other his is laughing, and it's killing him that he cannot see what's making him laugh from where he's standing.

He has to know, so he's going in.

I'm going in.

Let's try this again.

I'm on my way to your house, guided by the stars
I'm pulling in the driveway
I'm turning off the car
I'm running to your porch
I'm sprinting up the stairs
The door swings open and you're standing there

You're beaming down at me
You're reaching out for me
You pull me in your arms and I feel your heart pounding
I take a step back to catch my breath
And we look at each other and double over and laugh
And laugh
And laugh

Mumbo finds himself running out to his car keys jingling as the cold air blows through his pajamas.

He pulls out of his driveway, pulling into the road and driving to Grian's house, guided by the star's light in the dark sky.

Mumbo pulls int Grian's drive.

He turns the car off, jumping out and shutting the door racing up the drive to his porch.

Mumbo sprints up Grian's stairs.

The door swings open, revealing Grian, also dressed in pajamas, beaming at Mumbo, nothing but joy and fondness on his face.

Grian reaches out for him, pulling him into his arms, and Mumbo can feel the shorter man's heart racing his his chest.

Mumbo takes a step back to catch his breath.

The look into each other eyes.

"-I love you-" They both says, doubling over in laughter.

They laugh, and laugh before embracing each other.
