Gotcha!

Summary:

When Tech fell, there was someone there to catch his fall. Two very special troopers.

This short fic series will be part of the wider Rex’s Rebel Force collection-series, a parallel storyline to merge with the overall story.

Work Text:

Tech was falling, very fast too. The velocity, incalculable at the very moment.

The sacrifice having been made and there was no going back now. Survival not an option, the nearing death was imminent. Tech, was committed to this, for his family.

Tech closed his eyes, his last thoughts those of his brothers, his sister. A wish for the galaxy of them being safe, for them to be staying together and finding Crosshair.

It would not be long now.

The last thing Tech would feel was the ground crushing into his tired bones. It would hurt for a brief moment and then it would all be over. For good.

Thud. Crash. Oblivion.

But none of those things happened.

What Tech felt next, was arms around him. Two sets of arms and those arms, were cradling him ever so gently with a soft voice speaking to him.

“Hey there.”

“Wha… what happened?”

“You fell. We caught you.”

Simple, as that?

Tech was placed on top of something soft and then a warm blanket was placed on top of him. The excitement and fear of the fall catching onto the genius, his eyes falling shut. Tech could hear the familiar sound of a scanner close by though.

Managing to ask in his tired confusion though. “W… we?”

Tech heard the chuckles.

“Don’t worry brother, you’re among friends here.”

A reg’s voice? Yes, indeed it was. But who?

“Can you see his goggles anywhere?”

“Spotted them!”

Two regs.

Tech could not make out what the others were saying if anything after that, simply closing his eyes. The feel of his stomach queasy at best, but, he was still, alive. Right?

He heard the footfalls though, close by.

“How are you feeling?”

“Um, slightly off.” Tech made a self inventory but did surprisingly feel no pain. “But I do not seem to feel hurt, not at the moment anyway.”

“Heh, well, with no small thanks to the new hover-tech we acquired, pun intended.” Another chuckle. “We literally caught you midair.”

Tech’s brain was rattling, something so familiar and yet… then it dawned on him.

“Cody?”

“Yeah, it’s me Tech.”

“Here.”

Tech was handled his goggles next. Placing them onto his face, the slight crack in there, most likely du to the pair having blown off of his face while he was… falling.

Tech seemed thoughtful for a moment, but then his vision cleared and seeing his saviours hovering over him, he realised he knew them both.

“Commander Wolffe.”

“The same. But it’s just Wolffe now.”

“How did you…???”

There were so many answers to Tech’s questions he needed to get right now, but he suspected those would have to wait.

“We’ve been monitoring your team for a while now. Guess it’s safe to assume, you are not with the Empire.” Cody then revealed.

“We are not.”

“Yeah we know that now. We had to be sure, though.” Wolffe added.

“You defected as well? Both of you?”

“We did.”

“So. What else do you do when you’re not rescuing falling clones?”

“Rescuing other clones.” Wolffe chuckled.

Tech could only nod. He should’ve known better. That was exactly what Echo did as well and what the team should’ve been doing, which they did, but only on occasion. For Rex’s Cause. But why had Rex not told them about Cody and Wolffe?

A spell of silence fell on the three.

“So, you feeling any better?”

“Much, thank you.”

“Good, we have a ship close by.”

“Are you able to walk or?”

Tech tried his shaky legs, getting up from the small cot. He was physically alright but the fall had taken its toll for sure.

“With a little bit of help?”

“Don’t worry brother, we’ve got you.”

Wolffe and Cody both let Tech lean on them, the three taking to the ship in no time.

Seated inside, Tech simply had to ask,

“So, are you working with Rex or?”

“Rex?” Cody sounded surprised of hearing the Captain’s name.

“Yes, we have done so, on occasion.”

Cody and Wolffe exchanged glances.”That would explain some things.” Cody agreed.

Tech deduced from the interaction between the two they were unaware of Rex being involved in any kind of rebellion, clearly.

“We really need to have a talk, Tech, to get on the same page.” Cody told him then. “But first, we’ll take you to our base and let you rest. Then, we talk.”

Tech feeling the fatigue, for once did not argue. Rather closing his eyes and letting the hum of the ships engines lull him into a slumber. After all he was alive and as far as Tech was concerned, in good hands.
