Welcome to Town

Chapter 1: Cas?

Chapter Text

You paled as you looked at the stick in your hand. You were barely an adult! You felt sick all over again, but luckily you had already emptied your stomach. You had to decide what to do, and quickly. You had a decent amount of money tucked away at the moment. You didn’t have much time.

You brushed off your new uniform and let out a breath. It was your first day at your new job- over 1000 miles away from your old home. It had taken you a few days to get there but now you had a small little place for you. The town was small but so far everyone was nice.

Benny popped his head out of the kitchen door. “Did you say you needed a kitchen table, sug?”

You looked over. “I need everything.” You teased. “Why?”

“I have a friend that has a small table and some chairs.” He offered. “Free of charge.”

“Really?” You grinned. “That’s great! Can I ask you to help me get it to my place? You have a truck. I’ll make you lunch.”

“Deal.” He smiled and went back to the kitchen. Him and the owner had been so nice to you this far. You were so thankful for them. Taking a breath, you made sure you had a pen, and your pad. You waited for the lunch rush and soon started having a few tables. You were nervous, but did your best to hide that.

“That’s Dean. He’s a regular.” Benny told you as you grabbed some plates, pointing to the man in the back booth. “He’s one of my best buddies.” He grinned. “Works at the garage. He’s in here for lunch most days.”

You hoped since Benny was nice, that Dean was. “Hopefully he likes me.” You took the plates to the nearby table before going to Dean’s. “Hi.” You smiled. “I’m Y/N, and I’ll be your waitress. Can I get you something to drink?”

“I’ll get a Dr. Pepper today. And I usually get the burger special.” He smiled. “I know all the waitresses here, sweetheart. You are new.”

You warmed. “New to town, yeah. Moved in a few days ago.” You explained with a shrug. “I live above the bar.”

“Oh, with Ellen?” He grinned.

“I think she’s my neighbor? Because I’m the only one in my apartment.” You chuckled.

“She owns the bar.” He smiled. “So yeah, probably your neighbor.”

You nodded. “Well, it’s nice to meet you. Let me get your order in.”

He nodded and watched you go. You were nice. He hoped that you liked it in town. He’d make sure to tell you that he could look at your car when needed. He heard you laughing and noted you were talking to Benny. He was glad his friend was welcoming.

It didn’t take long for you to bring him over his order. “Enjoy.”

“Thanks, sweetheart. Welcome to town.” He winked. “Hope to see you around more.”

You smiled. “Thanks, Dean.” You waved before going to your other tables. You were enjoying your job so far, but knew your feet would hate you in about 7 months. If not sooner. You weren’t looking forward to that part but here you were. You’d make it. You had to.

You’d been there about a month, and felt a lot more at home. You knew just about all the regulars and had started hanging out with Jo a lot. She was really nice, and you thought of her as a friend. As you started your shift, there was a fresh face in what you had called ‘Dean’s booth’. You rarely saw anyone else there. “Hi, I’m Y/N. What can I get you to drink?” You smiled.

“Hello.” He smiled at you, making you blush.

“Hi.” You blushed harder when you realized you already said that.

He grinned wider. “I’ll have some hot tea, please.” He ordered.

“Coming up. I’ll be right back.” You waved and rushed to get that made.

Benny was sipping some water at the drink station and smirked at you. “Somethin’s got you flustered, suga.”

“Who me? No.” You chuckled, adding the hot water to a mug with a tea bag.

“Ah, tea. Cas is in your section.” He chuckled. “Now that makes some sense.”

“Cas?” You asked shyly. You were letting the bag steep.

“Castiel Novak. Dean’s best friend. Owns the bookstore.” He motioned to the left. “End of the block. Nice fella. Shy, quiet type.” He explained as you finished up the tea. “Like you.” He nudged you.

You blushed at that. “Well, thank you for telling me about another person in town.”

He chuckled. “Course. Enjoy.” He smirked as he went back to the kitchen.

You took Cas his tea and gently set it on the table. “Can I get your order?”

“A grilled cheese with fries, thank you.” He handed you the menu.

“I’ll get that order in for you.” You said, taking the menu once that was written down.

“Dean mentioned you were new in town.” He said softly.

You nodded. “Been here just about a month now.” You played with your pen. “Dean’s been really nice. Everyone has.” You smiled.

“I am glad. Hopefully you can stop by my store sometime? If you like to read.” He added. “My bookstore is down the street.”

“Benny was telling me about that. I may have to come check it out.” You smiled.

He brightened. “Great.” He watched you go put his order in. He pulled out his phone. You were right, she’s nice. He sent Dean. Though I’m unsure why you were so insistent I come alone. He added. He couldn’t figure that out.

Just fit with my schedule so I couldn’t go today. That’s all. Did you get her number?

I’ve barely spoken to her. How would I go from ordering, to getting her number?

Clearly you’re not working hard enough. You’ll get there.

Cas was frowning at his phone when you brought his plate. “Everything okay?” You asked softly.

“Yes, yes of course.” He set his phone down. “Thank you.” He smiled at you.

“Let me know if I can get you anything else.” You told him before going to check on your other tables.

Cas smiled when he saw you walking into his store a few days later. “Y/N, hello.” He looked so happy to see you. “You’re looking lovely.” He complimented you.

“Hi.” You blushed. “Finally have a day off so I thought I’d come check out your store.” You immediately liked how calm it felt and how it smelled so cozy. You started looking around excitedly. “Is it in sections, or just…random?” You giggled.

He looked sheepish. “Large sections then more random in each section. But I can tell you where anything is if you are looking for something in particular.” He offered.

You chewed on your lip. “Uh, baby books? Like the What to Expect kinda books?”

He paused for a moment. “Oh, those would be in that corner.” He motioned. “I’ll show you.”

“Thank you.” You followed him. He pointed out a section so you nodded.

“Let me know if there’s anything else.” He said softly before returning to the counter. That wasn’t what he expected. Were you expecting?

After a few minutes, you came up with a pregnancy book, and a chapter book. “I’ll have to come in here to build up my book collection.” You smiled.

He grinned and rang you up. “You are welcome anytime.” He said easily. “Anything else you’d like to find in town?”

“I haven’t really been shopping.” You noted. “I need to get a few things for my apartment.” You said as you paid. “So anything cheap.”

He thought about it. “There’s a thrift shop in the next town.” He pulled out a piece of paper and wrote down the address. “I know the owner, they’re really nice.” He promised. “I have a truck, and Benny has a truck so if you’re in need of that I’m sure we can find a time.”

You smiled at that. “I can’t afford to pay much, but I’ll pay for gas.” You promised. “And I made him lunch when he helped get my table and chairs, so I can also feed you.”

He chuckled. “No worries. I have off on Sunday, if you’re free.”

“I think I get off at 2 that day, if that’s okay?” You sounded hopeful.

“Of course.” He nodded. “I look forward to it.” He did intend to mention the book to Dean. He waved to you as you left and let out a breath.
