The Quiet Strength of Luna and Neville

Summary:

Just a one shot of Luna and Neville out on the grounds of Hogwarts at night.

First fanfic ever and thought I would start with a small idea. Thanks for reading!

Work Text:

The evening air was cool as it swept across the Hogwarts grounds. The sun was just dipping behind the Forbidden Forest, casting a soft orange glow over the lake. Most students were in the Great Hall, finishing their dinner, but Neville Longbottom had slipped outside for a breath of fresh air. The day had been long, and though he was used to the hustle and bustle of Hogwarts, there were times when he needed the stillness of the evening to collect his thoughts.
He leaned against the stone wall by the entrance, watching the ripples on the surface of the lake. The sound of footsteps behind him made him turn, and there, walking toward him with a dreamy smile and her usual eccentricity, was Luna Lovegood.

“Hello, Neville,” Luna greeted, her voice soft as ever. She didn’t seem surprised to see him here, as if she had known he would be.
Neville smiled, a bit awkwardly, but there was a warmth to it. “Hey, Luna. What brings you out here?”

Luna tilted her head, her silvery eyes reflecting the light of the setting sun. “I was looking for some mooncalves. They like to dance under the full moon, and I thought I might catch a glimpse of them tonight. But, you know, the Nargles have been especially mischievous lately, so I’m not sure they’ll let me.”

Neville chuckled, the sound genuine. He’d never met anyone who could talk about Nargles and mooncalves with such seriousness. And yet, there was something oddly comforting about it. Luna had a way of seeing the world that made everything seem just a little more magical, even if it was all a bit eccentric.
“You know,” Neville said thoughtfully, “I’ve been trying to figure out what to do for Herbology class tomorrow. Professor Sprout wants us to come up with a new type of plant for our projects, and I have no idea where to start.”

Luna’s eyes brightened, and she walked closer to him, standing beside him and staring out at the lake. “Plants are so fascinating, aren’t they? They have so much potential, so much hidden power. Did you know that the Wiggentree is said to bloom only when it feels truly appreciated?”

Neville raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “I didn’t know that. That’s… pretty incredible.”

“Indeed,” Luna continued, a slight glimmer of excitement in her voice. “You could always try crossbreeding a plant with magical properties, like a Venomous Tentacula, and see what happens. Just make sure to keep the potions book handy in case things get a bit… lively.”

Neville laughed softly at her suggestion, feeling a sense of peace he hadn’t expected. Luna always had a way of putting things into perspective, and somehow, she made him feel less alone in his uncertainties.
“I’ll keep that in mind,” he said with a smile, “but I might need some help if things go wrong.”

Luna gave him one of her serene smiles, the kind that made him feel like everything was going to be all right. “I’m sure you’ll do wonderfully. You’ve got more courage than you realize, Neville.”
Her words were simple, but they resonated deeply with him. It wasn’t the first time she’d said something like that, and each time, it made him feel like he was more than just the nervous, shy boy who had always struggled to fit in. Luna saw something in him that he hadn’t always seen in himself.

“You know,” Neville said after a beat, his voice more serious than before, “I’ve always admired that about you, Luna. How… how confident you are, even when people don’t always understand you.”

Luna blinked, surprised, then gave him a thoughtful look. “You’re a lot like that too, Neville. You’re just quieter about it. But I’ve seen you stand up for what’s right, and that takes real bravery.”

Neville’s heart thudded in his chest, and for a moment, he didn’t know what to say. He was used to being in the background, always one step behind the others, whether it was with Harry or Hermione or any of his classmates. But here, with Luna, he didn’t feel like he had to be anyone other than who he was. Her words were so genuine, so kind, that it felt like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders.

“Thanks,” he muttered, his voice thick with gratitude. “That means a lot, Luna.”
She smiled again, a little softer this time, and stood a bit closer to him, her presence comforting and light. “You’re welcome. Sometimes, all we need is someone to remind us of what we’re capable of.”

The air between them felt different now—lighter, warmer, like something unspoken had shifted. Luna’s eyes twinkled as she glanced up at the sky, and Neville followed her gaze. The stars were beginning to appear, scattered like diamonds across the velvet sky.

“Maybe you’ll get that mooncalf sighting after all,” Neville said, his voice quieter now. “I think it’s a good night for it.”

Luna nodded, her face soft with the glow of the evening. “Maybe,” she said. “But I think what’s most important is that we’re here together. Sometimes, that’s all the magic we need.”

Neville looked at her, feeling an unspoken bond between them. In that moment, he realized that Luna wasn’t just eccentric or dreamy. She had an uncanny way of seeing the world with a quiet, gentle strength that made everything seem a little brighter, a little more magical. And in her presence, he felt like maybe, just maybe, he could be a little more like that too.

As the evening stretched on, the two of them stood side by side, talking about everything and nothing, the soft sound of their voices blending with the whispers of the wind. For the first time in a long while, Neville didn’t feel the need to be anything other than himself. And with Luna beside him, he realized that, perhaps, that was enough.
