Work Text:

The afternoon sun filtered through the thick canopy of trees in the forest near the old shrine, casting dappled patterns on the mossy ground. Okarun stood at the edge of the clearing, nervously shifting his weight from one foot to the other, the tips of his sneakers scuffing the dirt. His heart was pounding, not from fear—though being this deep in a place known for supernatural occurrences would have been reason enough—but because Momo was sitting cross-legged on a boulder just a few feet away. Her attention was fixed on her phone, and her brows furrowed in concentration as she scrolled through her messages.

He couldn't stop staring at her. She wasn't doing anything particularly extraordinary—just her usual mix of focus and nonchalance that made her seem like she could handle anything. It was infuriating and mesmerizing all at once.

"You're staring again, Okarun," Momo said without looking up, her voice carrying a teasing lilt that made his ears burn.

"I—I wasn't staring!" Okarun protested, his voice cracking slightly. He tried to adopt a casual tone, crossing his arms and leaning against a nearby tree. The rough bark dug into his back, but he kept his posture stiff, hoping to salvage some dignity. "I was just... uh, keeping an eye out for, you know, ghosts or aliens or whatever."

Momo finally glanced up, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Oh, really? You mean like that time you 'kept an eye out' and ended up running straight into me when the Turbo Granny showed up?"

Okarun groaned, his face flushing deeper. "That was different! I was trying to save you—"

"By tripping over yourself?" she interrupted, her smirk widening.

He opened his mouth to retort but snapped it shut, knowing he'd only dig himself deeper. Instead, he turned his gaze toward the thick underbrush, pretending to examine their surroundings. The forest was eerily quiet, the kind of silence that usually signaled trouble in their line of work. A shiver ran down his spine, but whether it was from the supernatural atmosphere or Momo's teasing, he couldn't tell.

Momo hopped off the boulder with a graceful ease that Okarun couldn't help but envy. She pocketed her phone and brushed her hands against her skirt, sending a small cloud of dust into the air. "Alright, let's get moving. We're wasting daylight."

"Wasting daylight? We're in the middle of nowhere!" Okarun gestured around them, exasperated. "Do we even know what we're looking for?"

"A yokai. Duh." Momo started walking, her ponytail swaying behind her with each step.

"Yeah, but what kind of yokai?!" He hurried to catch up, his shorter stride making it a struggle to keep pace with her determined march.

"Does it matter?" she shot back over her shoulder. "If it's dangerous, we deal with it. If it's not, we leave it alone."

"Easy for you to say," he muttered. "You're not the one who always ends up as bait."

"I don't make you bait," Momo countered, giving him a side-eye. "You just have a knack for attracting weird stuff."

"That's not a knack; that's a curse!" Okarun retorted, throwing his arms up in frustration.

Momo laughed, the sound light and genuine, and it caught him off guard. His irritation melted away, replaced by a warm, fluttering sensation in his chest. He glanced at her, the sunlight catching in her hair and highlighting the faint freckles on her cheeks. For a moment, he forgot about the forest, the yokai, and everything else. All he could think about was how much he liked hearing her laugh.

"You're hopeless," she said, breaking him out of his thoughts. She gave him a playful nudge with her elbow, and he stumbled slightly, his cheeks burning again.

"Am not," he mumbled, shoving his hands into his pockets.

They walked in silence for a while, the tension from earlier giving way to an easy companionship. Okarun's nerves gradually settled, and he found himself enjoying the quiet. The forest, for all its creepiness, had a certain beauty to it. The trees stood tall and proud, their branches intertwining like the veins of some ancient, sleeping giant. The air was cool and crisp, carrying the faint scent of earth and pine.

"Hey," Momo said suddenly, her voice breaking the stillness. She had stopped a few steps ahead, her gaze fixed on something in the distance.

"What is it?" Okarun asked, immediately on edge. He followed her line of sight but saw nothing out of the ordinary.

"I thought I saw..." She trailed off, her eyes narrowing. "Never mind. Probably just my imagination."

"That's not comforting," he muttered, but he felt a pang of relief when she started walking again.

They hadn't gone much farther when a low, guttural growl echoed through the trees. Okarun froze, his heart leaping into his throat. "Did you hear that?"

"Yeah," Momo replied, her tone calm but her body tense. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the small, glowing talisman that had become her weapon of choice.

The growl came again, louder this time, and Okarun felt the ground vibrate beneath his feet. A shadowy figure emerged from the underbrush, its form massive and hulking. It had the body of a bear but the face of something far more sinister—its eyes glowing red, its mouth lined with jagged, uneven teeth.

"Okay, that's definitely not my imagination," Momo said, her grip tightening on the talisman.

"What do we do?" Okarun asked, his voice high-pitched with panic.

"Stay behind me," she ordered, stepping forward.

"Are you kidding? I can't just—"

"Stay. Behind. Me," she repeated, her tone leaving no room for argument.

Okarun swallowed hard but obeyed, retreating a few steps as Momo squared off against the creature. She raised the talisman, and it began to glow brighter, the energy radiating from it like heat waves. The creature snarled and charged, but Momo was faster. She dodged to the side, her movements fluid and precise, and struck the creature with the talisman.

The impact sent a shockwave through the clearing, and the creature howled in pain, its form flickering like static on a broken TV. But it wasn't done yet. It turned on her, its claws slashing through the air with deadly speed.

Okarun's instincts kicked in. Without thinking, he grabbed a fallen branch and lunged at the creature, aiming for its legs. He managed to trip it, giving Momo the opening she needed to land a decisive blow.

The creature let out one final, earsplitting roar before dissolving into a cloud of black smoke. The forest fell silent once more, the only sounds their ragged breathing.

"You idiot," Momo said, turning to him. Her voice was sharp, but her expression was soft, her eyes filled with something he couldn't quite place. "I told you to stay behind me."

"I couldn't just stand there," he replied, his chest heaving. "I had to do something."

Momo stared at him for a moment, then sighed, shaking her head. "You're impossible."

"But I'm alive," he said, offering her a shaky smile.

She rolled her eyes but smiled back, and for a moment, everything felt right.
