Chapter 1: It Begins

Chapter Text

Yuuichiro Amane had always been misunderstood; however, he didn’t know that when his parents had killed themselves, he would be blamed for their death. People who knew Yuu’s parents claimed that only an insane child like him would do such a thing. Sure, he got into fights at school a couple of times and maybe he even got suspended once for knocking a kid unconscious. It wasn’t his fault that the kid was too weak to handle the fight. Besides, it was the other kid’s own fault for even picking on Yuu in the first place.

Even so, how the hell did he end up here? How did he get placed in Sanguinem Asylum when he didn’t do a damn thing?

Of course, Yuuichiro was terrified at this point. He was falsely accused of his parents’ murder and was also declared to have a severe mental disorder. As he was led to his room, he could overhear the nurses murmuring that he even looked insane when they thought he wasn't listening.

Now here he was, sprawled atop his new bed, with white covers and a metal bed frame. Why was he here of all people? He wasn’t like the rest of the crazy people here! He should’ve been home, doing something other than sitting in this cream colored room with the wallpaper slightly torn off at the edges.

No, Yuu had not yet cried. He was still trying to process all the events that have occurred within this 24-hour period. At this moment, he could only cradle himself in his arms and shake violently, frightened for what was next. He had always heard that asylums, this one in particular, were extremely brutal. According to a rumor, once someone went in, they were never heard from again. His eyes fixated on the dusty, brown floor, and all he could do was sit there, just staring at the ground.

What if they’re watching me?

What if they’re going to take me somewhere deeper into this asylum?

What if I’m never seen again?

These relentless thoughts continuously ran through Yuu’s head. Honestly, what else could he do? He was stuck in this room, with nothing to do except sit here and cry. And that’s what he was exactly going to do at this moment. Cry. He finally realized that there was no way out of this and this actually was happening. As the denial slowly faded away, the tears that had been brimming in his eyes since this ordeal began, spilled at last and he curled up onto his bed, wailing. The black haired boy hadn’t cried this hard since he was a kid, probably. He hadn’t even cried when his parents died. In fact, he may have even been relieved. Yuu was always abused by them, called a demon child and worse. Hah, even after all that abuse and torture, he still hasn’t had a break.

Maybe this is my destiny. To be tortured all my life until I die a pathetic death.

Yuu continued to sob, thinking that maybe it wouldn’t get worse than this. Just maybe. I

-

It had been three days since he had arrived at Sanguinem Asylum. It had been three days since he realized this was his fate. It had been three days of nonstop crying.

All the nurses had tried to convince him out of his room to go over to the what they call the “Break Room” to go interact with other patients, but their efforts proved to be useless. They ended up having to physically remove him using force, which gave him no choice but to leave his room. When he arrived, his first impression was that the room was very plain. The walls were what seemed to be white, but they had darkened into a light gray after years of wear. The floor was covered with gray tiles and the floor was just as dusty as the rest of this place. Oh, how lovely this place was. He then eyed the other patients, slightly gritting his teeth, thinking to himself I’m not like the rest of you. The patients were either playing board games with each other, drawing, reading, or were plainly staring off into space.

Yuuichiro focused on an empty corner, thinking that would be a good place to wallow. He made his way over and sat down with a sigh. Yuu could feel a slight sting in his eyes as a result of all the crying he had done and noticed how empty his stomach had felt; although, he chose to ignore both.

Maybe he should starve himself? Yeah, that would be a great way to escape this hell. He held his knees up to his chest, tightening his hold around them.

Starving myself maybe the best option here.

Before he allowed himself to consider other possible methods of dying, his thoughts were interrupted by the appearance of a blonde boy, who looked the same age as him. The boy smiled kindly down at him and lowered himself onto the ground to sit in front of Yuu. Neither had spoken a single word yet. Yuu instinctively narrowed his eyes at the blonde sitting in front of him.

“You’re not like the rest of them, are you?” the blonde asked, slightly tilting his head with that small smile still on his face.

“...The rest of them?” Yuu raised one eyebrow at the boy, and the other nodded.

“Yep! Unlike them, your mind is actually here,” He scooted a little bit closer to Yuuichiro, whose face was almost completely hidden by his knees. “So tell me, what’s your name?” Yuu lifted his face a little, to get a better look at the blonde.

“...Yuu,” He was silent for a couple seconds. “And you?” The blonde smiled even more, apparently pleased that Yuu had asked for his name.

“Mika. It’s nice to meet you, Yuu-chan!” He held out his hand to the other, but Yuu only offered his new acquaintance a questioning look. The black-haired boy glared at Mika, slightly furrowing his brow.

“Why are you doing this? I’m just some kid who ended up here by accident. What do you want with me?” He clenched his fists onto his knees, still glowering at the blonde.

“Because you seemed pretty lonely. And it looks like you’re threatened by everything.” Mika’s eyes averted from the other. Yuu could catch a glimpse of Mika’s own distant sadness in those vivid blue eyes. “Plus, I feel pretty lonely myself,” he admitted softly, glancing back at Yuuichiro.

“Well, that I can understand. Seems like even the crazy people here are avoiding you with how stupid you sound,” Yuu grumbled towards the other. Mika blinked at him and then gave a slightly surprised laugh, making Yuu blush faintly.

“I guess that’s true, Yuu-chan. But it’s great to know you aren’t trying to avoid me either,” Mika then crawled over to Yuu’s side, sitting right next to him.

“Well...I guess you’re not too bad,” Yuu mumbled into his knees, trying to hide his slightly blushing face.

“Aw, Yuu-chan! You’re blushing face is so cute!” Mika giggled, leaning closer into Yuu’s face. “You don’t have to hide it, silly!”

“Ugh, how are you so carefree in this place?” Yuu groaned, glaring at Mika; although, it was hard to take the black haired boy seriously when his face was completely red.

“Because I want you to feel safe here! I can tell you’ve had a rough couple of days here.” Was it that obvious that Yuu had been crying for days? He hadn’t looked in a mirror for a while, but he assumed his eyes must’ve been extremely red. “Even if it isn’t very safe here, you’ve got to have hope, Yuu-chan,” Mika stated, tilting his head slightly. After a couple silent moments, the blonde spoke up.

“So, how did you end up here?” The two were leaning against the wall; they hadn’t moved an inch since Mika first took his place next to Yuu.

“I was accused of killing my parents. People said only an insane child like me would do such a horrendous thing,” His fists tightened as he scowled. “Assholes. They killed themselves. I had nothing to do with it.” Mika noted the pent up anger in Yuu’s voice and spoke up before he said anything more. Before he said anything more to say, Mika spoke up.

“My parents wanted to get rid of me, so they claimed that I had several mental disorders I don’t have. No one would listen to me, no one at all,” The blonde sighed, looking up at the ceiling. “And here I am. In this probably never ending hell. Actually, now it’s not too bad since I have you now, Yuu-chan.” The other glanced at Mika, his face now tinted pink.

“You don’t make any sense…” Yuu grumbled, averting his eyes from Mika. Yuu didn’t know why, but he didn’t mind the presence of the blonde. Those practically glowing, blue eyes made him feel a bit calmer than before.

“Well, anyway, Yuu-chan, looks like our break time is almost over.” At those words, Yuu’s breath stopped. What would happen if he went back? He was pretty sure some kind of therapy would start, but what if it was worse? He started to tremble slightly, not wanting to leave this pocket of safety in the corner with Mika.

Of course, Mika noticed the other starting to shake and his eyes filled with worry. He placed his hand on Yuu’s shoulder. Instantly, the boy looked up at him with glazed eyes.

“Don’t worry, Yuu-chan. The first few days aren’t as bad. They just take you into a room with a place where you can lay down and they talk to you in a nice calm voice.” His face then twisted into a grimace. “However, after a week or so, it starts to get worse...they…” He bit down on his lip. What was Mika saying? He wasn’t trying to scare Yuu-chan. Not only that, what if one of the doctors or nurses were watching them?

“What do they do, Mika?” Yuu’s voice was stern and his eyes locked onto Mika’s. He needed to know so he could be ready.

Mika gulped. He didn’t want to frighten him nor get them into trouble. “...They just continue to treat you worse and worse in the therapy sessions. It’s not all that bad! Although they can be really scary, so don’t disobey them.” Mika attempted a wide smile at the boy, but Mika knew that Yuu could probably see right through him.

Suddenly, a voice on the intercom announced that break time was over and that they must all return to their rooms.

“Well, it’s been nice talking to you, Yuu-chan. Let’s meet again tomorrow, how does that sound?” Mika asked, as the two stood up. Yuu took a good look at the other and he could tell something was off about this boy. He seemed happy and cheerful on the outside, but when Yuu stared into those blue eyes, he felt that there were more secrets hidden within.

“Yeah, that sounds fine,” Mika grinned and patted Yuu on the back.

“Great! See you tomorrow, Yuu-chan!” Mika ran off to one of the doors, leaving Yuu alone in that dark corner.

Yeah, there’s something up with this place.
