She was so wrong for this
So, so wrong
But it wasn’t like she could control it, right?
Lucy saw herself in a internal debate, she knew her best friend was experiencing an incredibly complex identity crisis and her, well… she was getting really fucking horny.
Don’t get her wrong, she was not going to act in any kind of way on her feelings, she knew that would just be wrong, the only thing she could really do right now was stay by his side and be the reassurance she knew he needed, and that’s exactly what she was going to do.
But the last thing she saw coming was her getting all hot and heavy because horns, claws and wings sprouted from her best friend, her incredibly hot and attractive best friend that apparently looked even hotter with dragon parts. She wanted to throw herself from a cliff.
That night Natsu begged to share a room with her, and not seeing any problem at all, no one opposed, Happy questioned him but Natsu just asked him to stay with Wendy and Charla, just for that night.
To say it was uncomfortable was an understatement, they were both sitting on the same side of the bed looking at the damn wall like it was going to answer all their questions and it looked like they both refused to start the conversation.
At least that's what she thought, until Natsu started talking.
“Lucy?”
“Ye-yeah?...” Oh she knew this was going to be an awkward conversation.
“Did you… really mean what you said? About me, about my… body.”
She really didn't know what to say, she said what she thought and those thoughts didn't change one bit.
“Yes Natsu, I did, I still do. And I know they won’t change either.”
“I think I’m disgusting.”
Well, she did NOT expect that from him, he always seemed so in favor of looking like a dragon, of being one, she never thought it would affect him so much, the almighty Natsu Dragneel concerned about his appearance.
“I think you looked hot.”
“...”
“...”
“...What?”
Oh yeah, she was throwing herself from a cliff for FUCKING sure.
“I mean- It’s just- I don't mean it in a weird way or anything I just think, I don’t know, you looked kind of good? In a normal way! Not saying you didn’t look normal or anything, you just looked really good…”
At this point it was impossible for her to hide her blush, not like there was any point trying to, Natsu’s senses were way too good to even try, what she didn’t expect was seeing Natsu blushing like a tomato, and that was saying something. That man did not blush for the life of him, so it took her a little aback.
“Are you serious right now?” He sounded like he had barely found his voice and Lucy was positive he was about to combust, well, at least he looked like it, seeing as smoke was literally coming out of his head.
“Yes? Look, Natsu, I didn’t want to say that so… bluntly, but it’s the truth, my truth . I’ve never cared about how you looked, I don’t care, and I never will. You are Natsu, my Natsu, with horns or without them. You are loud, hyperactive, aggressive and problematic-”
“Wow, thank you for the compliments-”
“AND, let me finish, tender… and compassionate and so full of love to give. What happened to the Natsu that never cared what anyone had to say about him, the Natsu that always was so sure of who he was, what changed?”
“You.”
She expected some kind of deep reason why he would ever change his own view of himself, but not that, she was the reason he became insecure? She broke out in a cold sweat, an incredibly uncomfortable feeling setting in her stomach and she was sure that she was going to start vomiting at any moment.
“I’m… I’m the reason you feel disgusted with yourself?” She wanted to cry, her eyes were starting to get wet and her vision was blurry. She made her best friend, her partner and (most probably) the love of her life insecure. She was the worst.
“NO!! No, no, Lucy listen. You are right, I never cared, why would I care about what some nobody says about me, they don’t know anything about me, if they want to think that I’m some kind of menace let them, that doesn't make it true, but you… I always cared. You just became so present in my life, so… there. I’m not making any sense sorry, let me start again.”
She wanted him to keep going, Natsu talking about his feelings? That was rare, and she felt like, yet again, she failed him for making him feel like he was not expressing himself well enough.
He took a deep breath, dried a stray tear from her cheek and took her hands in his, and with eyes Lucy had only seen him with in the middle of an incredibly hard battle, he started speaking.
“Lucy, when we first met, I never thought that you would become someone so important in my life. You were so loud and annoying-”
“Hey!”
“-but… something just drew me to you, I don’t know what or why, I always found myself wondering if you were okay, if you needed anything or if I could do anything for you, it didn’t matter how small or big. So what if I got in trouble for uprooting a tree? So what if I had to fight the whole guild if it meant I could be the one saving you? I stopped caring about those things, if it meant you were safe and with me. I became greedy. I wanted you for myself and that scared me. I was scared because I started caring about what you thought of me, because I don’t know what I would do with myself if you ever left me. I’ve never been good with change, and you came to my life and just decided to turn everything upside down. I started feeling… things, I’ve never felt, started thinking things I’ve never thought before, and that terrified me. I always thought I should be living in the moment, but you came into my life and I started thinking about my future. I am afraid of what you think of me because you became one of the very reasons I’m still here and I don’t know what to do.”
Natsu felt like something extremely heavy was lifted from his shoulders, that’s what it felt like speaking about your feelings? he should do it more. His breath stopped for a second the moment a salty scent reached him. Lucy was crying. Natsu always hated seeing her cry, but something was different this time, she looked so… at peace. She wasn’t sobbing, or whining , she was looking at him, with the most tender eyes he has ever seen, a subtle blush and the softest smile ever, and he was sure he had fallen in love all over again.
She didn’t say anything, and for a moment, Natsu thought he messed up, until he saw Lucy reaching for him. Her hand cupped his cheek, so carefully someone would think he was made of glass and started leaning to him. He didn’t move a muscle, thinking that if he so much as moved a hair, she would stop.
Her lips were soft, like a summer breeze, and for a second he thought he actually died and went to heaven. Their kiss was the definition of tenderness and even though they had been dancing around each other for years, they weren't in a rush.
Her hand moved to his neck so she could deepen the kiss just a little more, while Natsu was trying to find her other hand so they could interlock fingers. It felt surprisingly right, like it was meant to happen. There was no urgency in their kiss, just soft caresses and quick little kisses there and there, and every single one was just as full of love as the first one.
They slowly separated, their foreheads still touching each other while they tried to recompose themselves, it wasn’t by any means a heavy or passionate kiss, but it left them breathless anyhow.
“Wow…” Natsu could barely believe what just happened, Lucy kissed him, and he kissed her back. He felt like he could die that very second and not regret absolutely nothing in his life.
“Yeah…, s-sorry for not asking, it just felt right at that moment and I don’t know, I’ve liked you, shit, loved you, for so long and after everything you said my heart was throbbing like crazy and-” She was babbling again, trying to give an explanation to something that didn’t need one.
“Lucy.”
“Y-eah?”
“Shut up.” He grabbed her face and kissed her like it was the last thing he was going to do in his life, she eagerly accepted the kiss, feeling like finally, everything was right.
Once they separated, they gave each other a little bit of space, just enough to catch their breath, their hands still holding each other.
“I love you, too.” He mumbled, with a very deep blush, his heart was running a mile per hour and he didn't know why he felt so nervous, she confessed first, it’s not like she would reject him.
They locked eyes, and a soft giggle came from them, turning into laughter. Why were they laughing? They had no idea. Natsu reached for her, making them lie on the bed while they stared at each other with smiles full of love.
“I love you, Natsu. And that will never change.”
“I love you, Lucy. And you can bet that won't ever change either.”
