Work Text:
Mike once again twisted in his sleep, reaching out to hold you. He only did that when he had a nightmare… You turned around to face him so you could hold him. He always said the next morning that you doing that would make his nightmares disappear. Unfortunately you knew what this nightmare was about- his brother Garrett. It was the anniversary of his brothers death and unfortunately you knew he was thinking about it all day. No wonder he is having this nightmare tonight, you thought, bringing Mike closer to you. As you did this he snuggled closer to you, sniffling into your chest. You wished you could help him more… You loved him so much and it hurt you that you couldn’t anything else. If only you could go into his dreams and comfort him there, hold him and tell him it’s not his fault.
Mike began to shake again, specifically his head saying ‘no, no, no’ over and over again. You presumed he got to the part where his brother is taken by a person in a red car, never to be seen again. Mike once again began to cry, this time even harder as his nightmare brought back the guilt that he had began to work on with you and his counselor. You tucked his head under yours and began to shush him, kneeding his hair as cried. As you did this he squished himself closer to you, grasping for your protection from his nightmare. His arms wrapped around you like a vice but it didn’t matter to you. Not now. He needed you.
Eventually his grip lessened as his brain transitioned into a dream, maybe even one with you in it. The thought made you smile, perhaps even a little more than it should’ve. As you eyes began to fight to stay awake, you kissed him on his forehead and decided you would go into dreamland alongside him. You would go anywhere with him, so long as he was yours and you were his. Maybe that’s why you planned on proposing soon. You took a glance at your nightstand, where his ring was safely tucked and then back at him, finally sleeping peacefully. You would do anything to make him happy, including being his shoulder to cry on when he had nights like this. And you knew he would do the same, always. You didn’t need a ring to prove it, but damn was it nice. It was this thought that finally had you join him in his dreams, and his life, forevermore.
