A Package Deal

Summary:

"Date?" Jungkook asked vaguely, looking at the candy bars on the rack.

"You have to have a date to get the couples deal," the clerk explained wearily, looking around at the other employees as if to say "you see this guy?"

"Oh," Jungkook said, thinking quickly. "He's in the bathroom. He'll be right back."

The clerk looked unimpressed. "Your partner has to actually be here," he explained. "I'm sorry, but we do get people who try to cheat."

Jungkook is in trouble until perfect stranger Namjoon steps up to help.

Notes:

Prompt:

Broke uni student Jungkook tried to get a valentine's day couple discount to upsize his popcorn at the cinema by lying about how his partner is at the toilet. Unfortunately the person behind the counter is very skeptical and won't let Jungkook get the discount without his partner there.

A stranger, Namjoon, saw the whole thing and decided to step in, pretending to be Jungkook's boyfriend.

Work Text:

Jungkook never minded going to the movies alone. He always did things as they pleased him, when they pleased him, and since he'd stopped living with his parents, he enjoyed not having to answer to anyone about where he was going and when he would be back.

However, this time he rather wished he had someone there with him. For, lo and behold, there was a couples deal for snacks at the movie theater! He could get an extra large popcorn, two candy bars, and two drinks for the price of...well, whatever the price of a medium popcorn, one candy bar and one drink was. For some reason they never properly posted the prices of these package deals. And since another thing Jeon Jungkook enjoyed was eating, he was determined to get that deal. He didn't really need two drinks, but that was fine.

But when it was his turn at the counter, the harried-looking clerk asked "Where's your date?"

Of course, Jungkook was trying to cheat, but why did it matter anyway?

"Look here," he said, leaning in to peer at the clerk's nametag. "Taehyun-ssi. I promise you, my date will be right here. But I would really like to pay now and go and get our seats as quickly as possible." He finished up with what he hoped was a winning smile.

Taehyun flushed slightly at that, but reiterated, "I'm sorry, but you will have to wait for him. Please stand over here...sir."

"That won't be necessary," a deep voice sounded in Jungkook's ear. The person's hand landed on the small of Jungkook's back. "Sorry to keep you waiting, baby. Shall we pay for the snacks now and go find our seats?"

Jungkook turned to see a tall, well-built man with tanned skin and dark hair dipping over his forehead. "Um, yes," he said, and then turned back to the counter, handing Taehyun his credit card.

The man kept his hand on Jungkook's back as they walked away, murmuring "so what are we seeing tonight, new friend?"

"Spiderman," Jungkook said weakly. "But you don't have to...I mean, thank you, but you don't have to hang out with me."

"But my ticket is for Spiderman, too," the man grinned. "I'm Namjoon."

"Nice to meet you, Namjoon-ssi. My name is Jungkook."

"Nice to meet you, Jungkook-ssi. Shall we?"

They found seats together exactly in the middle, where Jungkook could see and hear perfectly, and settled in.

"Um...I guess this is yours?" Jungkook handed Namjoon a soda. "I hope you like Dr. Pepper."

"You don't really have to share with me," Namjoon said.

"I didn't really need two drinks anyway!" Jungkook protested. "And it would be rude of me not to share now." He held out the popcorn as well, and shook it at Namjoon.

"All right, alright," he said, helping himself to a handful. "But you keep those candy bars."

Jungkook huffed at that, but was secretly happy to hold onto his chocolate.

They didn't have time to chat before the movie started, though, and soon Jungkook was engrossed in the continuing adventures of Miles Morales and friends. But just as things in the movie were getting exciting, he felt an arm sneak around him and squeeze his shoulder.

"What?" He turned to look at Namjoon.

"Shhhh," Namjoon warned. "Don't look, but that uptight clerk is in here. Wouldn't want him to get the wrong idea now, would we?"

Jungkook grinned and relaxed against Namjoon's arm. And since two could play this game, he reached out and put a hand on Namjoon's thigh, which turned out to be ROCK-solid. "Whoa," he whispered under his breath. The clerk walked down to the front of the theater and back, but he apparently found nothing amiss.

Namjoon removed his arm, and Jungkook began to remove his hand, only to have Namjoon quickly grasp it and pull it back toward him. "He might be back!" he explained.

Okay. Namjoon had nice hands, too. He wouldn't mind seeing what they felt like...elsewhere. Oh, who was he kidding. Why would this man with a sexy body and sultry eyes be interested in a nerd like him? He was probably just playing around for fun.

But Namjoon did hold his hand through the entire movie, even though they didn't see any more theater employees checking on them.

When the movie let out, Namjoon kept holding his hand and drew him up out of his seat.

"What do you say we go get a drink now, Jungkook-ssi?" Namjoon suggested, eyes twinkling.

"I, um," Jungkook stuttered, utterly forgetting how to speak. "Yes, I mean. That would be nice!"

They picked up their trash and headed for the exit, but along the way Namjoon tripped, flinging leftover ice and popcorn kernels everywhere.

"Oh, shit!" he exclaimed, grabbing a napkin from Jungkook and ineffectually attempting to clean it up.

A theater employee (thankfully not Taehyun) magically appeared.

"Sir? Sir. It's ok. I've got this."

"Aish," Namjoon said, shaking his head and standing up. "I'm sorry. My friends are always calling me the god of destruction," he added looking at Jungkook."

"It's quite all right, sir. Have a good night," the employee replied.

Jungkook grinned at his "date. " Maybe they were better matched than he'd thought?

"Let's go get that drink, Namjoon-ssi," he said. "I think we should get better acquainted."

"I think you're right," Namjoon replied, slipping an arm around him again and parading him out past the snack bar. Taehyun looked up, shaking his head as Jungkook waved and grinned. "See you next time, Taehyun-ssi!"
