A special night

Summary:

Tsubasa and Sanae recall a special night from the past during the Tanabata festival in Fujisawa. After years of separation, their love was rekindled under the stars, with promises of a future together. Now, years later, they relive that moment as the heart of their shared life, surrounded by memories and the joy of their children.

Notes:

Hello everyone, this story is a reinterpretation of "Ci vedremo a Tanabata" written and posted in Italian.
It differs slightly from the original story to simplify it, as English is not my primary language.

Work Text:

Summer memories

It was a calm early summer evening in Barcelona. The sky was tinged with blue and purple, and the city lights pulsed in the distance. Tsubasa Ozora and Sanae Nakazawa were sitting on the couch in their living room. Around them lay a pile of photo albums, symbols of a life built together.

In the next room, the crystal-clear laughter of their children broke the silence, while the two shared one of those rare quiet moments that only a couple married for years could understand.

Sanae opened one of the albums and began flipping through it slowly. Among the pages, she found an old photo that seemed to hold a piece of their soul. The image showed the two of them, younger, at a Tanabata festival in the city of Fujisawa. The lantern lights, their hesitant smiles, and the starry sky in the background told a story that time would never erase.

Sanae sighed, brushing her fingers over the photo. “Do you remember that night?” she asked softly.

Tsubasa, who had been distractedly looking at a photo of their children, turned around. When his eyes fell on the picture, a nostalgic smile appeared on his face. “How could I forget?” he replied quietly. “It was as if destiny wanted to bring us back together. After all that time… after everything I had left behind.”

Years Earlier: The Return to Fujisawa

The city of Fujisawa was alive under the stars, decorated for the Tanabata festival. The streets were crowded with people in yukata, the traditional summer garments. Paper lanterns illuminated every corner, their soft glow reflecting on the stalls and on bamboo branches laden with tanzaku. Wishes, handwritten on those small pieces of colored paper, swayed in the wind like sighs suspended in time.

Sanae walked among the crowd, her heart gripped by melancholy. Every step took her back, every laugh in the crowd seemed an echo of the past. It had been so long since Tsubasa had left for Brazil. She had always known he had to chase his dreams, yet the void left by his absence was a constant pain, like a dull drumbeat in her chest.

That evening, Sanae had written her wish on a tanzaku: “I want to see Tsubasa again.” She had laughed at herself immediately afterward, finding it a childish and silly thought. He had become a champion, a man chasing the stars. What could ever hold back the free spirit of Tsubasa Ozora?

Yet, as she walked, a sudden wind stirred the bamboo branches above her. The written wishes seemed to sing a silent song, and a familiar voice caught her unexpectedly.

“Sanae!”

Her heart stopped. She turned slowly, as if afraid to break a spell. Among the crowd, standing under a red lantern, was him. Tsubasa.

He was wearing a simple blue yukata that seemed even more modest compared to his imposing figure. But what stood out the most was his smile. It was the same smile she had seen a thousand times in her dreams, the same one that had lit up soccer fields and her darkest days.

“Tsubasa…” His name left her lips as a whisper, but he heard it. Their eyes met, and for a moment, everything else disappeared: the crowd, the lights, the noise.

“I’m back, Sanae.” His voice was firm, yet there was a vulnerability she had never heard before. “I couldn’t not come back here. I hoped to find you.”

His words struck Sanae like lightning. It wasn’t just chance that they had met. He had come looking for her.

“I can’t believe it… After all this time…” Sanae felt tears welling in her eyes but tried to hold them back. She didn’t want to seem weak, not in front of him.

“I’m here, and I never stopped thinking about you.” Tsubasa’s voice softened as the crowd seemed to dissolve around them. “Every time I scored a goal, every time I fell and got back up, you were in my thoughts. I’ve fulfilled my dreams, Sanae, but I felt like something was missing… someone.”

Sanae remained silent, unable to speak. Then, suddenly, she burst into laughter—a nervous laugh that escaped involuntarily. “You’ve always been like this. Always making me cry and laugh at the same time.”

Tsubasa smiled, moving closer to her. “And you’ve always been my strength, even when you weren’t there. Can I walk with you tonight?”

The Bridge and the Lanterns

The night brought them to the bridge over the river, where hundreds of floating lanterns were being released onto the water. The lights danced on the surface like fallen stars.

Tsubasa stopped and looked at Sanae. His hands trembled slightly as he took hers. “I’m not the boy who left years ago. I’ve seen the world, I’ve won matches… but nothing has made me feel as complete as being here with you.”

Sanae felt her heart explode. His words struck her with a force that took her breath away. “I always knew I would stay here waiting for you, Tsubasa. Because I knew that one day you would come back to me.”

The world seemed to stop as the two moved closer. Their foreheads touched, and then, as if pushed by an irresistible force, they kissed under the stars, with the lantern lights illuminating their silent promise.

Present

Sanae wiped away a tear, looking at Tsubasa sitting beside her. “That night changed us forever, didn’t it?”

Tsubasa nodded, holding her hand. “It was the night I realized dreams mean nothing without someone to share them with. You’ve always been my greatest dream, Sanae.”

She smiled, and in her gaze was the strength of a love that had endured time, distance, and hardships. “And you, Tsubasa, have been my wish come true.”

And as their children’s laughter filled the house, the stars above Barcelona seemed to shine a little brighter, as if they too remembered that night in Fujisawa.
