Work Text:
The 1-A classroom was filled with chatter even after the last bell rang a while ago.
Their last class was with Aizawa sensei, who gave them an assignment with a pretty strict deadline (that some people were complaining about, if the cries were anything to go by).
Since last week he’s been teaching them all about analysis; why is it such an underrated but useful skill to have. They looked at professional ones, the ones they would get as pro heroes when hired an analyst for the job. They went over many different kinds over the two weeks: some focused on weaknesses of the villains, while others rather focused on the strengths the hero had that would be determining factors on who would win the fight.
And now as for their final grade in the topic, they had to make one of their own.
Everyone wrote their name on a piece of paper and tossed it into a little basket that Aizawa sensei pulled out from under the podium (from his sleeping-bag if Izuku had to guess). After that all of them got to pick a folded paper from the basket. They immediately had to check who’s name they got firstly to make sure they didn’t get their own name (analyzing their own quirks would be a little too easy) and secondly everyone was curious who they had to do the homework on. They were forbidden from telling anyone from class whose name they got, but it didn’t stop them from erupting in chatter when Aizawa sensei dismissed them.
Izuku was vibrating with excitement. He got Tokoyami for the assignment and boy did he have many ideas! Learning about analysis on a professional level was already so much fun and now he could put all of his freshly learned skills to use! His fingers already twitched for his pen and notebook to start writing, but he couldn’t do that here. He would definitely go into a mutterstorm and then everyone would know who he got.
He just needed to wait till he got home.
“Deku-kun!” Uraraka called out as she made her way over to his desk. “Who did you get?”
Izuku’s eyes widened at the question. “I can’t tell you! Aizawa sensei said-”
“I know, silly! I was just joking!” she snickered, her giggles growing louder when she noticed the embarrassed blush creeping up on the boy’s face.
“But anyways, what do you think of the homework?” Uraraka asked after she stopped laughing. “I’m sure it’s gonna be easy for you! With all that you wrote down about us in training, you’ll just have to copy it to a different paper. I wish I had that!“ a sigh escaped her lips. ”I have know idea where to even start!” she exclaimed, a small pout forming on her face.
Izuku opened his mouth to encourage her and tell her that she’ll do good, but a loud shout preceded him.
“Midobro, your boyfriend is here!”
At the call of his name he turned in the direction of the voice, stopping momentarily the conversation with Uraraka. The one calling for him was Kaminari, who was standing next to the open door with a very confused Hitoshi beside him.
Oh, that’s right! After classes ended Hitoshi always came to pick him up, so they could walk home together. And if he was here, that meant he should get start packing, because-
He froze in a half crouching position, one hand reaching for his backpack when Kaminari’s words fully registered in his brain.
“My… what?” Izuku asked, stopping after the first word and shaking his head, like he was convincing himself that he heard wrong. Conversations died in the room after the blonde’s shout (for some reason that Izuku couldn’t understand), so everyone could hear his not so loud words.
“Your boyfriend!” Kaminari repeated, but when the green haired boy furrowed his brows even further, he clarified. His tone hinted he was a little confused on why Izuku didn’t understand who he meant the first time, but continued anyway. “Hot, purple guy from 1-C?”
To make sure it couldn’t be misunderstood who he meant he pointed at Hitoshi. Said boy stared at the finger positioned in front of his chest even more confused… then burst out laughing. The traitor.
“Wh-what, no! No, no, no, no! We're not- I’m not- He’s not my… Hitoshi, stop laughing and help!” Izuku vigorously shaked his head and his hands, stumbling over his words, not succeeding in forming his thoughts into sentences. He turned to the purple haired boy for help but the other was still bubbling with laughter even after the scolding from the green haired boy. At least now he made the attempt of hiding it by covering his mouth with his hand. It definitely didn’t work, but the effort was there.
“Don’t lie Midobro!” Kaminari interjected. “He walks you home every day and I saw you guys on a date last Saturday!”,
Someone ooooh-ed in the background, but Izuku decided to ignore it for a moment. He was flipping through his memories, trying to remember just what they did on Sunday that made the blonde assume that they were dating. (How did he even know they walked home together? Did he follow them?)
Last Sunday… He got woken up by Waffle, when the cat knocked down the books from his desk. Then he went to the kitchen to get food, but he couldn’t find anything that he wanted to eat. So obviously, being a good brother and all, he dragged Hitoshi with him to get breakfast at the bakery that opened up recently…
Okay, so maybe that could have looked like a date from an outer perspective, but it wasn’t!
“Th-that wasn’t a d-date! We’re not-” he tried again, but Kaminari interrupted his poor attempt to clear himself.
“He was holding your hand though” an accusing finger was pointing at Hitoshi again.
“He’s a trouble magnet” the 1-C student said flatly, then added after a moment of thought. “And forgets to look around before crossing the street when he’s hungry” the comment earned a ‘you didn’t need to tell them that!’ from his brother and a couple giggles from the class.
Izuku rubbed at his eyes defeatedly. This clearly wasn’t going in the direction he would’ve liked. Him and Hitoshi dating? Absolutely not.
“Deku-kun?” Uraraka called out to him from the same spot she was before this whole chaos had started. Right, because they were in the middle of a conversation.
When he looked at her, she put her hand on his forearm. “You don’t need to hide your relationship, we support you!” she smiled sweetly at him, squeezing his forearm slightly in encouragement.
So apparently it wasn’t just Kaminari who thought they were dating.
“I’m not- We’re not dating! You thought we were dating too?” the girl hesitantly nodded in front of him.
“Did anybody else think I was dating Izuku?” Hitoshi asked, eyebrows raising in suspicion. What he suspected turned out to be true, slowly but surely more and more people started raising their hand.
The first one was Kaminari, who felt the need to empathize he thought they were dating (and still didn’t quite believe it wasn’t true). Following him a couple more people put their hands up and eventually more hesitant hands copied them.
In the end everyone had at least one hand in the air (Shoji had three), glancing around at each other and their hands in the air.
“I know Dad said they were stupid, but this much?” Hitoshi asked while trying to keep his laughter from bursting out. Again, not with much luck.
“‘Toshi, don’t say that! That’s mean!” Izuku was trying to scold him, but the other wasn’t listening. He gave up with a sigh and instead turned to the class. “But seriously, I’m not dating my brother. That’s… ew.”
…
“HE’S YOUR BROTHER?!”
“Umm, y-yes?” he stuttered out, flinching back at the collective shout coming from his class. "I thought you guys knew?”
“Well obviously not!” Kaminari yelped, shaking his hands in front of his face. His face turned into an apologetic look. “Shit, now I feel really bad for pressuring you guys. I’m so sorry.”
“It’s fine Kaminari-kun!” Izuku reassured him and sent a smile to the boy. He only bent down to grab his backpack and started actually packing after making sure the blonde knew he wouldn’t hold a grudge against him. It was just a misunderstanding after all.
The class thought he was dating his brother.
This snapped into place these weird interactions he had with his classmates ever since the school year has started. Uraraka’s gaze anytime he said something about Hitoshi, the looks he got from every one of them when the 1-C student was brought up, Ashido’s random questions that he never understood, but now that he knew what she was on about made a lot more sense.
This has been a way too awkward and embarrassing conversation for his liking and today has already been so tiring, he wanted to finally go home. Pet the cats (give them too many treats for Papa’s liking) and play video games with Hitoshi.
His brother .
That he wasn’t dating.
“Although” Kaminari started, with a smirk returning to his face as he faced Hitoshi “if you're not dating Midobro, is there someone else in the picture or are you single?”
The purple haired teen blinked twice at the electric boy, before turning away and hurriedly tried to catch his brother’s gaze.
When he did, Izuku immediately realized what he wanted. He could recognise that expression anytime. The little twitch in Hitoshi’s thinly pressed lips and the begging eyes meant ‘he wanted to get out of the room as fast as humanly possible, so could he hurry the fuck up please and thank you’.
Normally he would comply and start packing faster, because he knew what it was like to be in a social setting he didn’t want to be. But this was the absolute best time for revenge he could ever get.
Hitoshi laughed instead of helping him explain their connection to each other.
Karma said now it was his turn to leave the other in the awkward situation and not help. One. Single. Bit.
While the blonde tried really hard to flirt with his brother (with the help of a hella ton of horrible pick-up lines), his yellow backpack fell out of his hands to the floor and Izuku burst out laughing.
