Work Text:

Vanny likes to think that she is far better than the person that she used to be. Settling down had never been in her life plan but it had happened and she liked to think that she was happy.

She leans down to pat one of the sheep, her back aches but it’s almost a comfort really.

She makes a mental note to rest later, to avoid scolding from the farm owner but she could care less about actually resting, far more focused on whatever task she had been given.

A voice calls out her name and so she straightens her back and turns to look at the source.

John Marston - she hadn’t seen him in a few months, she believes the last time that she saw him, they had been up on the mountain, avenging Arthur by killing Micah.

“John.” she greets as she strides over to where the man is, leaning against the fence. “Jack.” she greets as she looks down at the teen, he was growing good.

The pair get to chatting away while Jack sits down to read the book he was carrying, Vanny pays it no mind as John talks about how Blackwater had forgotten their names and how Beecher's hope was coming along and how Uncle was annoying.

John is talking about Abigail and Vanny is just nodding along, she liked Abigail - never understood how a woman such as her ended up with a man like John but she was happy for the two of them.

Besides, she thinks she sees herself in their shoes now.

Corvus appears to scold her for not taking a break, no doubt the other woman assumes that Vanny’d still be running around the farm but pauses when she notices that Vanny is very much taking a break and talking to someone that Corvus only vaguely knows.

Vanny turns to look at Corvus, nodding a greeting to the woman and John does the same before he goes back on his rant about something the rather - Vanny stopped keeping track after the fourth conversation change.

She turns to look at Corvus again and she feels a small little pang in her chest.

Vanny was never very good with love, never had the chance to figure it out for herself until Corvus had come along, and even then, Vanny had been far too busy with the gang to truly realize that she was in love.

But now, she isn’t in a gang. She’s a simple ranch-hand, with the most beautiful woman in the world by her side.

And Vanny is glad that she had learned to love, because Corvus fills her with a joy that she can’t explain.

“Yes, well, I suppose I must get back to work. Tell Abigail I said hi.” she tells John who nods and says his good-byes, taking Jack with him as Vanny turns her attention back to Corvus.

“Just have a few more tasks to finish and then I’ll go inside and rest.” Vanny says, grabbing one of Corvus’ hands to kiss it before walking right back over to the sheep, doing what she had done right before John had appeared.
