Work Text:
Victim climbed up on top of the side of the crashed rocket. Mitsi had already draped the picnic blanket across the hard surface. She peeked into the picnic basket and, pulling out a packet of sandwiches wrapped in plastic, she let out an excited squeal. Her hair bobbed as she bounced up and down.
“Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches?? How did you know I’ve been dying for these!” She burst out joyfully. She dropped them onto the picnic blanket and, jumping up, threw her arms around Victim, nearly sending them both tumbling down the side of the rocket.
Victim planted his foot down, laughing. “Careful! Or we’ll both fall off.”
Mitsi pulled away, joining in Victim’s laughter. “Guess that’s one way to mess up our picnic.” She looked back into the basket. “You even got apple juice and donuts! How do you do it? You always know exactly what to get!”
“Maybe I keep an eye on a certain someone.”
Mitsi giggled as she closed the basket. “I’m going to have to spoil you one of these days. Next picnic’s on me.”
“I’m happy with whatever you want.”
“Nuh-uh! You do not pull that card on me. I’m going to pick out all your favourites…”
“But these picnics are for you-”
“For you too! This is for us! You need someone to spoil you from time to time.” Mitsi tore of the plastic eagerly.
Victim took his own sandwich and more carefully removed the plastic. His gaze kept returning to Mitsi, happily enjoying her sandwich. Nothing filled him with more joy than watching his wife enjoying herself like this.
It was so easy to make her happy. Almost too easy. It was getting hard to actually spoil her since she liked the smallest things.
Perhaps they could go on a holiday to some elaborate place. Then again, she already turned down their last holiday to help with a food drive.
That was more important.
Victim paused eating his sandwich as he noticed Mitsi had laid aside her own. He tilted his head to the side, watching the solemn expression on her face.
“Daydreaming?”
Mitsi smiled lightly. “I was just thinking about the future,” she said quietly. “Where do you think the company will be at in 10 years?”
Victim hummed thoughtfully. “I don’t know. I never would have believed a few years ago that I would be here with you, running one of the most successful companies in the Outernet. Anything could happen.” The joy faded from his face and was replaced with a frown.
Mitsi seemed to sense Victim’s change of mood and her smile faded. She slipped her hand into his and lightly squeezed it.
“I’m glad you came,” she said softly. “I could never imagine life without you.”
Victim smiled faintly and he held up Mitsi’s hand, kissing it gently. “You made the difference in my life. If you hadn’t been there… none of this would have ever happened.”
“For either of us.”
Victim nodded. The silence stretched between them as they thought back to the day they met.
Mitsi squeezed Victim’s hand again. She let go and looked back out towards the sunset. “I hope Rocket Co. is still running by then,” Her silky raven hair blew over her shoulder in the light breeze. “How much bigger do you think it’ll be?”
“We will be shipping products across the entire Outernet. Customers will be flocking to our doors. Our name will be unmatched.”
Mitsi smiled. “We can change so many lives for the better.” She ran her fingers through her hair. “You know… I was thinking we could start a charity branch. It would really help the community…”
Victim sat up straight. “Of course! Why didn’t I think of that? If we put aside a percentage of our earnings towards charity, so many people could be kept off the streets!” His voice was riddled with excitement.
Mitsi’s face lit up. “Yes! Maybe we could even host some fundraisers for the less fortunate.”
Victim grinned broadly. “You come up with the best ideas, Mitsi!”
A light blush crept across Mitsi’s cheeks and she covered her face with her hands. “Anyone could have thought of it.”
Victim clucked his tongue, playfully batting away Mitsi’s hand hiding her face. “Take credit where credits due. You came up with the idea.”
Mitsi smiled. She looked towards the setting sun. “Where do you think we’ll be in 10 years?” she asked finally.
Victim’s smile softened, his eyes sparkling slightly. “Together still. Running the company, changing lives.”
Mitsi looked at Victim, her eyes dancing with mischief, “Will we have kids?”
Victim laughed nervously, his cheeks burning. He avoided meeting Mitsi’s cheery gaze. “Maybe he can focus on the company for a bit longer. Kids are a whole new business.”
Mits’s smile widened as she placed her hand on his. She kissed him lightly on the cheek. “Not a business, Vic. A whole new life.”
Victim’s hand closed around Mitsi’s and he gazed at her fondly, his eyes burning with intense love. “There’s no one else I would rather spend that time with than you.”
Mitsi leaned her head on Victim’s shoulder. “And I with you.”

Darkness.
There hadn’t been any light in this room for some time. The only time any light penetrated the darkness was when Agent came to visit. No-one else was allowed in.
Victim sat motionless in his chair, staring into the nothingness. Everything was numb. No tears filled his eyes. No sobs shook his frame.
He felt nothing.
10 years had passed since that day. The day they had planned for the future.
The company was in shambles. Stocks had plummeted. Workers had quit the company. Share holders had removed their support.
She was no longer with him.
Never again would they hold hands. Never again would they sweep across the floor in dance. Never again would he wrap his arms around her waist, or spin her around the room.
He was alone.
No friends, No business. No children…
No wife.
He was well and truly alone.
10 years had passed.
None of their dreams had come true.
And they never would.
