Work Text:
“Do you want some dates?” dates? Loid looks up from his book and sees Yor Briar. The trouble maker of Eden Academy had asked him on a date?
“Sorry?” Yor looks at Loid nervously and that is all he needs to confirm his suspicions. Yor briar had just asked out Loid forger on a date.
“Do you want dates?” He noted that the question was worded weirdly but he supposed that was the nerves talking for her.
Having said that, how should he respond? If he were to decline it would definitely leave a scar on their relationship. What is their relationship as of right now? Friends? Tutor and peer?
“Ok,” Why did he say that? He didn’t even think it through properly what their relationship was yet. Why did he act so impulsively for no reason?
“Nice! Drop by my place a little after school okay?” Yor beamed at him a bit too brightly. But since he didn’t want to sever this connection he let it go.
Yor skip out of the library to her next class. Loid sits and..
Panics the hell out. What should he wear? What should he bring? Where should he bring Yor. What does Yor even like? What types of flowers should he buy? Should he buy flowers?
He is so unprepared for this ordeal.
Ok no calm. This is fine.
Oh who’s he kidding? This isn’t fine. How is going out with someone that he doesn’t really have feelings for? Does he have feelings for her? Now that’s a whole different conversation he’s going to have with himself but right now he’s going to prepare for the worst.
The bell rings signaling the end of lunch. Tidying himself up and putting his books back on the shelves he says a quick thank you to the librarian. He swiftly goes back to his class sitting in the back wondering what he should do. Yor sits a little more close to the front and he just stares at her.
What should he do…?
Feeling eyes behind her Yor looks and catches Loid, embarrassed he quickly looks down to his notes.
“Ms. Briar, eyes up front,” scolds the teacher. Yor, not wanting another bolt, turns to the front. But not before waving a small ‘hi’ to him.
Loid is not.. I mean NOT down bad for little miss trouble maker. It's ridiculous that an upcoming scholar has a… a crush on her. No, never, not in any universe, and especially not in this one. Whatever these feelings are, they are unimportant. Yor’s feelings are important though. And what if his feelings are important to Yor? Ridiculous!
Frustrated with the ordeal he drowns his thoughts in his notes. He has a little bit of time before he actually needs to prepare. He’s thought of bringing heathers for Yor, something she has said she liked the smell of. Loid knows that she lives a little out of the city so he planned on touring her at his favorite places, the book store, flower shop, market, anywhere that he’d find relaxing and hopefully little people. Who knows what they would say back at Eden.
The teacher ends the lesson and informs the students that it's time for self study, Loid fidgets with his pen. The notes get messy and unrefined as he focuses on two topics at once. He looks back up to Yor. Heathers do suit Yor. Good luck, admiration, and protection. Can be used to mix tea. What would Yor’s tea taste like? Something sweet? Or would it be more on the bitter side? Would she try to use herbs that are beneficial to health?
“Loid? You dropped your pen,” Taken by surprise he backs up. When did Yor get so close? “I forgot to mention that my little brother will be home and he might get a bit defensive, sorry in advance Loid.” She looks around to see that the teacher isn’t here and sits next to him in an empty seat.
“You have a little brother?” Loid asks. She nods her head.
“His name is Yuri, I've been taking care of him since our parents passed,” Loid looks down at his notebook.
“Sorry I didn’t mean to-” she cuts him off in a flurry.
“No! No! It's okay you didn’t know. If anything I shouldn’t have brought it up.” they both look away sensing the awkward tension. Loid is busy trying to think of a way to continue the conversation but if anything he might make it more uncomfortable. “Uhm.. I actually wanted to ask you a question, for the dates.”
Loid’s heart stutters for a bit. “How many do you want?” she asks.
How- how many dates does he want to go to? In all honesty he doesn’t really want to go on dates. But it is for Yor though. He ponders the thought.
“Let's just start with three for now,” he says. Yor looks at him incredulously.
“Three separate dates?”
Dont people do that? Was that too much? One to get to know someone, two to see what they're interested in, and three to properly discuss their relationship going forward?
“W-well to be honest, I am kind of new to this thing…” he admits.
Yor stifles a laugh with her hand which in turn makes Loid a more red.
“You really are a city boy aren’t you?” she elbows him in the side.
“Hey! What is that supposed to mean?!” he defends, holding on to his side. She really doesn’t know her own strength.
The bell rings loud and clear for the students to hear. Time feels so short when busied with the thoughts of others.
“I’ll see you later then,” she nodded and got up for her remedial class. Loid feels like he should be a lot calmer than he is now. I mean what was that? He’s never dated anyone before! How would Yor know either! It's not like she's gone on and dated anyone before too. Right?
What does it even matter if she's dated anyone else? It's not his life. Yor can do what she wants. She can date whoever she wants. It's not like Loid actually likes her. He's doing it because he doesn’t want to hurt her feelings. After the dates he’ll just say that he doesn’t think the relationship is going anywhere. Why should he care so much?
A pit in Loid's stomach starts forming after thinking all that. He brushes it off as hunger, he did spend his lunch reading at the library.
Since this was his last class of the day, he stayed in the classroom a bit longer to fix his notes. He was having trouble remembering the material since he was pretty distracted the whole time. In the end, Loid fixes his work and looks at the time. School should have ended a bit ago.
It's an hour and a half before he has to get to Yor’s place. He turns into a whirlwind of scattered papers, quickly shoving his notebooks into his bag he runs to his dorm. Where had all the time gone?? He really needed to figure out this time management thing quickly.
Loid busts down the door with the voracity of a football (soccer) player and rushes towards his room. If he hurries he’ll be able to make it to the tram, but it’ll take 15 minutes to get to town square. On the other hand if he runs he’ll make it over in 10; he’ll look like a mess if he’s going on a date though.
A date! He needs flowers! At least chocolate or something!
Loid decides that he’ll take the tram and have 10 minutes to choose flowers. But what to wear? Since it’s the first date he’ll take her on a walk, possibly around the market?
Loid takes a cozy sweater that he bought a month ago and wears it; it wasn’t too raggedy although he’d wish he got one with a bit more color. He combs his hair back, but ruffles it back. The slicked back hair was too formal for the sweater to match.
He looks at his watch and walks out of his dorm, grabbing a scarf on the way. He briskly paces out of the school before booking it to the station cursing out the ‘no running in the halls’ rule. The station was packed with people getting off from work. Loid pays for his faire and pushes himself through the people barely making it on.
He grabs one of the handles and continues to time himself.
“Going on a date, young man?” an older woman says. Loid’s cheeks warm, but looks at her and nods. She chuckles and gives him a thumbs up. “Good luck, I'm sure you’ll win her heart.” He smiles at her for the encouragement, but whether he wants to win her heart is a different thing.
What is their relationship?
The tram stops by the side of a road leading to town square. Loid gets off and walks to the flower shop. The doorbell rings for his entrance. Heathers… Heathers… Heathers! The last bundle on the stand with heathers, baby’s breath, and a few flowers he didn’t recognize. It was perfect.
Loid brings the bouquet to the register and pays before running off once again. He has five minutes till he reaches Yor’s place. Her house had been off the main city in a more quaint part of town. It lay on the edge of the forest and despite asking why she didn’t move to the dorms with her brother, she just shook her head.
He jogged the trail up, it was starting to make sense why Yor had so much strength. By the time he made it up the trail he was out of breath. He tried calming his breath a bit to not seem too unsightly but his stamina was going against him.
The house was in his sights and his heart was racing. This was it. He came face to face with the door and knocked on it. The hand holding the flowers were tense. Through the door he hears rapid footsteps.
The door swung open and he was faced by a young boy. He glares at Loid and yells, “she’s not here!” before slamming it in his face. So that was her brother.
More shuffling can be heard from outside, this time a feminine voice accompanied them. The door opened once again and there she was.
“Loid! You made it,” her smile was warm and genuine. She looks down to the flowers in his hands. “Woah did you bring these?”
He snaps back to reality when he’s getting asked, “Yes! They’re for you.” He looks away as his hand scratches his head.
“Really? Well these are for you then!” The bouquet is then replaced with a bag in his hand. He looks down to see a sack of red berries. “I thought you were being modest with the amount so I just gave you enough to make a soup, if you want anymore I can give them to you again.”
Red berries. Dates. They’re date fruit. He’s an idiot.
“Oh! Uh, thank you! I just thought- well- nevermind,” his words come out jumbled and Yor looks at him worried.
“Sorry! Did I make a mistake by accident?” Loid shakes his head trying to remedy the situation.
“No! I just thought that you.. Were asking me on a.. Date..” Yor’s eyes go wide looking at him, then at the flowers, then back at him. Her face starts getting warm and visibly red. “My misunderstanding, Yor. Sorry.”
“Oh no, it's fine! We can still go on one?" Yor offers, “If you want to though!”
Loid takes a pause, does he want to? Yor looks at him with expectant eyes, screw his reputation. He takes her hand. “Would you like to go on a walk with me?”
Yor smiles, “Yes I would.”
