Chapter Text
Steam.
Such is essential in the creation of rich and creamy coffee beverages.
From a simple flat white to the classic cappuccino, all you need is water and heat to add water vapor and air to the milk.
After that, one obtains their caffeine-filled treat—or, maybe their brown magic potion to power through any adversity fate brings upon them.
In human linguistics, however, steam isn’t as magical; it’s an overflow of emotions—strong feelings that make an individual feel like a kettle about to rupture from a flood of sensations.
Given such, perhaps it is no wonder that Zhongli finds solace in witnessing the steam from the espresso machine escape. As he observes the vapor break the surface of the milk as well as fold air into the milk, he exhales.
Amber eyes gaze towards the shop’s entrance as the man is approached by one of his closest friends.
“You should be reserving a seat for the two of you already.” Childe chides playfully. “You’re lucky that we’re not as packed as we usually are.”
Zhongli doesn’t respond, remaining silent.
The hiss of steam from the espresso machine fills the quiet between them, joining the soft murmurs and chatter around the coffee shop.
Despite his seemingly calm demeanor, he was nervous.
Almost more anxious than he has been for major presentations and progress reports.
Realizing such, Childe decides not to tease him too much. “Come on, you’ll do just fine. It’s just coffee, you’re not proposing to the girl.”
Just coffee.
Honestly, he wouldn’t be this worried about a date, but after he accidentally blurted out his infatuation for her during his first actual chance to interact with her from the get-go…
He’s not taking his chances.
Even if it did make her smile and let out a gorgeous laugh, Zhongli hopes that he won’t be making any other slip-ups anytime soon or in the future.
He would like to keep any remaining dignity he has left in her eyes, if any remains.
As he momentarily thinks of the woman, she enters the shop right on cue.
Though not in her usual business getup, she remains stunning with her hair tied into a bun, donning a pale brown sweater, white pants, and beige heels.
When she gives him and Childe a sweet smile and wave, his best friend takes the frothing pitcher from him and gestures to him not to keep her waiting.
“Don’t worry, both your first orders are on the house.”
And with a deep breath, he makes his way towards her.
His gaze finally meets with her serene yet keen ruby gaze.
The steam inside him seems to emerge and dissipate all at once.
It’s time to have that coffee.
