They had always been close and open with each other in a way that they weren’t able to be with anyone else. They just had a thing between them that they couldn’t explain, except to say that they were like platonic soulmates. Now though, now came the reality that somewhere along the way they had evolved from that.
They remained pressed against the window with hands and mouths going everywhere as they tested the waters with each other, neither one caring that they were on display for any shuttle going past.
McCoy had realized years ago how he felt about Jim but was content with whatever it was that they had, so long as Jim felt safe to keep coming back to him. He knew Jim had been hurt by so many who were supposed to love and protect him, and he had refused to allow anyone else close enough to ever hurt him again. So if Jim was finally ready to let his walls down and let himself love Bones like he needed to, and let Bones love him in return, then McCoy wasn’t going to walk away from this, not ever.
This wasn’t something they were doing because they were bored and lonely, nor was it due to any lack of options. They were doing this knowing the risk they were taking if Star Fleet found out (there was an unwritten rule about senior officers not being allowed to serve together if in a significant relationship). They were doing this because they had found the one they wanted to come home to and tell how their day was, the one they want to share their happiness, sadness, frustration, and success with. The one their very soul didn’t want to live without.
