An unlikely friendship

Summary:

Vi is called to the guidance counselor to discuss her grades. She has mostly Bs, and an A in math but a D in English. Piltover Prep requires at least a C+ in order for her to stay on the boxing team. She signs up for tutoring and is randomly assigned to…Caitlyn Kirammen. Caitlyn, daughter of governor Kirammen. Despite her Moms status, Caitlyn has no friends, and always has her head buried in a book. You’d think with all that money and power she'd be swarmed with friends but she was always alone. Consensus is she's too good to hangout with the rest of the school population. Preferring the company of a book then dare to hangout out with one of us. Despite their rocky reputations, as they get to know each they become a pair of unlikely friends...maybe even more.

Chapter 1: Intro

Chapter Text

Vi's POV

“Hello, could you send Violet Lane to the office for a minute?”

The sound of the intercom breaks Vi out of her daze. She was in the middle of algebra class and Mr. Talis was drowning on about linear equations. She would be paying attention but she's never really needed to. Math was her easiest subject. Receiving A after A in every assignment. She grabbed her bag, a chorus of oohs heard as she began making her way towards the door. She ignored them. Despite her history of bad behavior and detention, Vi tried her best to stay out of trouble. After slamming the door to her classroom shut, Vi quickly made her ways through the narrow halls. 'Please please don't be another write up' Vi pleaded internally.

As she opened the door of the schools office a cool breeze hit her. The office aid, and older women with a scowl on her face, checked her in. Vi was not an unfamiliar face in the office. Often getting into fights or ditching.

"Third door to your left", the old lady muttered before returning her gaze to the computer in front of her.

Inside, Mrs. Merdarda motioned for Vi to sit down.

“I'm sure you're wondering why you were called so suddenly. Not to worry you are not in trouble.”

Vi shouldn't be surprised but she's relieved all the same. After all, she doesn’t need Vander getting another call from the school.

“As I’m sure you're aware, Piltover Prep prioritizes good academic achievement-" fancy piltie talk for grades are important-  "especially for our athletes and currently you have a D in English. If you wish to continue participating on the boxing team then you are required to bring your grade up to at least a C+.”

As much as she was relieved to not be in trouble she now had a whole new other issue to worry about. Passing the most pointless and boring class ever…English composition. As much as Vi tried she couldn't will herself to care about what a bunch of dead guys had to say. Not to mention it was like some annoying cipher just trying to understand half the shit they were saying. How anyone found joy in the subject was beyond her.

“Not to worry though, we offer an excellent tutoring service. Majority of the students who enroll have seen a drastic improvement in their grades and have left the program with better skills. I HIGHLY urge you to try it out.” The emphasis on highly left little room to argue. Not that Vi would. She needed to pass this class. Mrs. Merdarda shuffled through a stack of papers from her drawer before placing it onto her desk and sliding it over to Vi.

“Can I borrow a pen?” and with that Vi was enrolled into the program.

Per the tutoring's requirement, Vi was forced to meet with her English Teacher. Mrs. Monroe. The reason for this mess. Okay sure, Mrs. Monroe wasn’t a horrible teacher. In fact, she was really nice. She just happened to teach the most annoying subject ever. Vi waited anxiously as the clock hand moved ever so slowly, ‘tick tick tick’. God, time has never moved so slow. She rubbed her hand up and down her shorts, the fabric of her uniform feeling rough against her calloused hands. Her leg bouncing uncontrollably. A bad habit she had when she was anticipating something. The bell finally rang, the sound of chairs squeaking and papers ruffling signaling the end of class. Normally she’d be the first out the door but today she was being assigned her tutor. She knew she shouldn't worry too much, I mean, they wouldn't assign her someone stupid but she desperately needs to pass. Boxing was the outlet she needed. A way to release all the anger and frustration caused by life. And not to brag but she was pretty damn good at it too. A very loud and well intentioned “eh hem” breaks her out of her thoughts. She walked towards her teacher's desk, bag slung over her shoulder.

“Based on your schedule, you have been assigned too…” she pauses as she checks her computer screen, “Caitlyn Kirammen.” You’ve got to be shitting me. Caitlyn Kirammen, THE nepo baby herself. This has to be some sort of cruel joke.

“She's already taken this course and has tutored in the subject before. You will meet with her Monday and Wednesday afterschool in the library. You will earn extra credit just by attending the sessions and she will report back to me if there's any materials you need extra help with. Do you have any questions?”
Vi shook her head and with that she was on her way to meet up with Mylo and Claggor. Tutored, by the most pretentious girl at school, there is no way this is going to end well.

Caitlyn's POV

From the day she was born, Caitlyn Kirammen was expected to live up to her family's name. The Kirammen family, a matriarch, has always passed down its wealth and power to its daughters. Caitlyn being no exception.

Her mother was governor of Piltover. The city of progress as they called it. While her mothers name had entitled young Caitlyn too many luxuries and opportunities, it came at the cost of her personal freedom. At all times she was expected to be the image of grace and excellence. Perhaps all those years of forced perfection had rendered her inept at socializing. Seeing as her only true friend was Jayce, a family friend and teacher at her school. The only time she allowed herself to break free of that shell was in the solace of her bedroom, a place only for her. Away from the eyes of high society and her mother.

As Caitlyn lay sprawled in her bed, eyes roaming through a mystery novel she had recently acquired, she heard the faint sound of heels clicking outside her room.

“Caitlyn Dear, may I have a word?”

Her mothers words were less of a request and more a polite demand. Without waiting for her response her mother opened her door and walked inside. Untangling herself from her sheets, Caitlyn sat up and waited for her mother to continue.

“As you know, academics are very important if you want to get into a good university but schools are getting more competitive, they are looking for”, her mother paused, letting out an exasperated sigh as she let out the next words, “…well rounded applicants.”

At this, Caitlyn raised her brow, she had all As, had won several shooting competitions and had been awarded many certificates for her academic achievement. How more ‘well rounded’ could she get. If it wasn't for the years of etiquette classes she swears she would have rolled her eyes.

“Where are you going with this?” She asked apprehensively.

“I believe it would be in your best interest to take up tutoring. It’s volunteering without all the mess and filth. It is especially good for a governor's daughter to be doing.”

And there it was, her mother was always calculated with her actions. It was pointless to argue against, so like always, Caitlyn agreed and was entered into the program. Under her guidance she had helped several students pass their classes.

During her lunch break she went to Mrs. Medardas office to get assigned to her next student.
“Hello Caitlyn, What brings you by?”

“I’m here to get my next tutor assignment.”

“Yes, that's right! Let me pull that up real quick.” The click clack of Mrs. Medardas fingers hitting the keyboard filled the quiet room .

“You have been assigneddd...Violet Lane!”

That name sounded awfully familiar. Caitlyn wasn’t one for gossip but she's sworn she's heard rumors about violent fights and criminal activity. To say she was less than thrilled would be an understatement. However, she didn't let that show on her face, giving Mrs. Medarda a quick polite smile and leaving.

Violet Lane…Known delinquent. This was a disaster waiting to happen. However, Caitlyn was never one to back down from a challenge.
