The Song of Lions and Serpents

Summary:

“Bring the Lion out.”

“Bring the- Bring the Lion out.”

It’s the first quidditch game of the Marauders’ third year at Hogwarts and the song under Gryffindor’s claim announces a striking entrance, though not for the ‘right’ team.

Song - Lion by Saint Mesa

Notes:

People have probably written this before and this was on tiktok a while ago so i’m late but i had a 2 hour bus ride so here’s a very very short one shot if Hogwarts had speakers and songs in the 70s announcing the quidditch teams.

Enjoy!

(Again song is Lion by Saint Mesa)

(Also, for the sake of this Sirius isn’t on the quidditch team yet probably bc i’m reading atyd again so that’s where my brains at)

Work Text:

Gryffindor v Slytherin 1973

The chatter of students settled down as the commentator’s voice reverberated through the stadium. Anticipation surged through the rows, divided in sections of rippling red and green, almost a spectacle against the bleak and miserable weather.

It was Sirius’ first quidditch game back in his third year at Hogwarts, and as the final shuffling dampened next to him, the song all Gryffindors knew as their own resonated across the stands. The opening hums which vibrated through the grounds at each game would serenade James and the rest of his team as they march onto the field. A second hum, followed by a third, and as impatience grew, the magically amplified voice echoed once more.

“The storm is here and it’s dressed in green.”

Sirius looked around to matching quizzical looks on those around him, Remus and Peter staring back at him with the same question. Green??

“Here they are, SLYTHERIN!”

As if the lyric was his, Mulciber tramped onto the field, his permanent sneer plastered to his face. Shuffling started once more as whispers resounded through the turrets of red and gold.

“You’ve got fire running down your cheeks.”

“You burn everything you see.”

Each time, only more green and silver emerged as each member of the Slytherin quidditch team stepped onto the grass beneath Sirius.

“Diamonds in your skin, my blood flows.”

Six players now occupied the field, and as Sirius looked further, all but the seeker were present. The sea around him only grew more and more restless, after all, this was Gryffindor’s song! Years and years had passed and no other house had dared choose Lion, and while he wasn’t at all one for tradition, this only seemed unfair!

“Bring the Lion out.”

“Bring the- Bring the Lion out.”

“Bring the Lion out.”

“Bring the- Bring the Lion out.”

Just as the beat fell, a silhouette still cloaked in darkness stood in the Slytherin opening. Each passing beat led a poised step forward, each player beating their broom to the music. Light cascaded down, and a scrawny figure stood with the presence of an heir, the picture of blood purity and the Black family name.

Somehow, the cold grey-blue eyes found his own. His brother.
