Work Text:
Peter's phone was always, ALWAYS, on silent in class. That being said, Peter was also an honorary Avenger so there were a few people whose calls would always go through if it was an emergency. There usually wasn’t an issue with that seeing as there were very few times where an emergency where he was needed occurred during the school day. So when his phone rang in the middle of his english class his blood ran cold. The school as a whole had a policy stating that if your phone rang in class you had to answer it on speaker. Peter contemplated ignoring it for a moment but then the realization of there actually being an emergency set in and he couldn’t ignore it any longer. He pulled his phone out of his pocket only to be greeted with Morgan's face. He smiled at that relife flooding him, at least it wasn’t an emergency. He made a mental note of explaining to her that she could only call him when he wasn’t in school. She had just recently gotten the phone so he didn’t really blame her. He accepted the call with a soft smile, putting it on speaker immediately.
“Hey Mor, just a heads up you are on speaker and my whole class can hear you.” He could feel the eyes of his classmates on him but tried to ignore them and put all of his attention on his phone and Morgan.
“Big brother! Finally, what took you so long?!” She sounded happy but a bit annoyed. Peter chuckled.
“Sorry, sorry. I’ll answer quicker next time. Why did you call? Did something happen?” She sighed and Peter could see her adorable eyeroll.
“Yes. Fathers day is coming up and I need to know what you bought him.” She sounded fierce and Peter didn’t really know how to explain to her that while Tony was her dad and she saw Peter as her bigger brother technically Tony wasn’t his dad. So he laughed nervously but didn’t really feel like lying to the kid she would find out one way or another that he hadn’t gotten him anything.
“Mor, his YOUR dad. I haven't gotten him anything” She huffed.
“Yes, he is OUR dad, your dad. You HAVE to get him something or make him something. I don’t care, just give him something, he is both of our dad.” Peter couldn’t argue with her when she sounded so certain. Even if it would make it really uncomfortable to be around his mentor for a bit he’d do it for her. So he sighed again dragging a hand over his face.
“I’ll get him something, you happy now?”
“No still Morgan. Also you have to pinky-promise.” Peter snorted at the overused joke, shaking his head fondly.
“Pinky-promise. Was there anything else, kid?” She considered it for a moment before answering.
“Yea, actually, you need to come up and say hi to me and mom before you leave tonight.” Peter smiled, holding back laughter. Rolling his eyes in slight exasperation.
“I always do that and you are always asleep when I come by.” She sighed and Peter could hear her pout.
“Well come by earlier then, I never get to see you anymore.” Peter smiled, shaking his head fondly at the small girl.
“Yea, yea I’ll keep that in mind.”
“Okay, bye, love you 3000.”
“Love you 3000” She hung up and Peter smiled as he sat down in his seat. Everyone in the room was staring at him as if he’d grown a second head.
“Who was that?” It was Cindy who asked and Peter looked over at her contemplating how to explain who Morgan was. However before he could explain another one of the girls asked;
“You got adopted Parker?” Peter froze at the question but it was a good cover so he considered it for a moment before replying.
“Not legally.” He smiled carefully but most of the people in class seemed to respect that and held back any other question. They went back to the lecture and Peter couldn’t wait to get to the tower even if he knew that he would have to get Tony a gift before making his way there. He had no idea what to get the man with the most money in the world but he had to figure out something. Maybe he could make something for the suit? The problem with that was the fact that he needed access to Tony's lab both without the man knowing and without him being in there. Much to his luck Tony got roped into a meeting almost as soon as Peter stepped through the door and wouldn’t be free until after dinner.
“Hey Fri, could you not tell Tony what I’m doing? It’s just, it's a fathers day gift for him and well, It wouldn’t be much of a gift if you told him you know?” If the AI could smile she probably was at least she sounded amused as she agreed not to tell Tony. Peter spent the next few days until father's day to finalize the gift and when he went to bed at three am in the tower on Fathers day he was finally done. He only got about three hours of sleep that night but it was more than worth it. He hadn’t meant to spend so much time on the gift. The plan when he had agreed had been to just buy chocolate or a card to make Morgan happy. As it turns out Peter can never do anything half assed especially if it's for someone he cares about. There was also the voice in the back of his mind that craved Tony's approval. He went to school that morning. Tony was already in a meeting but Tony would be greeted by the gift as soon as he set foot in the lab where Peter had left a card explaining his gift. He desperately hoped the man would like it.
Surprisingly he got to school on time and as the day went on the anxiety began eating at him. What if Tony didn’t like it, what if he felt insulted that he gave him a gift. What if this ruined everything. He really didn’t want the man to be uncomfortable or mad at him for a stupid gift. When his phone rang just after lunch during maths, Peter's blood ran cold. He hoped no one else heard so he could just ignore it. Thanks to the ‘Parker luck’ that wasn’t the case. He glanced around the room then made eye contact with the teacher who was giving him an expecting look. He sighed as he pulled out his phone and froze when he saw that it was Tony calling. He swallowed the lump in his throat as he accepted the call.
“Hey heads up you are on speaker and my whole class can hear you.” Tony didn’t reply immediately but when he did Peter could hear how his voice wavered ever so slightly.
“Alright kid, I just, thanks for the gift, I really like it and well you couldn’t have given me a heads up?” Peter just stared at the wall in front of him. He had no clue how to respond to that. What could he say? Part of him was still in disbelief and the other in plain shock.
“Kid? You there?” Peter blinked and looked back at his phone before clearing his throat so he wouldn’t burst into tears in the middle of the classroom even if he wanted to.
“Yea, here, sorry, I just, you like it?” Tony laughed and Peter smiled at the sound relaxing ever so slightly.
“Yea, I love it” Peter full on grinned at that.
“You could probably make it a hundred times better than me so I-”
“No, absolutely not.” Tony cut him off and Peter blinked but remained silent. “We are not doing this again kid. How many times do i have to tell you that you have a brilliant mind, that one day will be greater than mine by far. Kid you are already as smart if not smarter than me you just haven't had the chance to put it to work until recently. I wouldn’t have made you the heir if I wasn't certain about that.” Peter felt tears in his eyes at the words and felt how his chest bloomed with warmth. Then he felt a bucket of ice cold water being tipped over his head as the words set in.
“Hold the fuck up. You made me what now??” Tony just laughed.
“I made you the heir? Did I not tell you that?” Peter just gaped before trying to answer but no words came out of his mouth.
“Oh shit I actually never told you about that? It was ages ago. Well I guess you know now.”
“What about Morgan and Pepper?” Peter asked, concerned evident in his voice.
“Pepper will step down eventually when she feels like it. She has been on board since the moment she met you. Morgan takes after her mother more. Besides she sees you as her older brother already so she won’t care on top of all of that. It's my company and you have proved to me time and time again that you deserved the title. With all the work you’ve put into the lab and helping the company these last few years you deserve it, more than anyone else. All the interns love you, legal love you even more because you’ve managed to keep me out of trouble. The military representatives fear you more than they fear me and Pep combined. I believe in you kid. Oh and one last thing, you are my son, in all but blood you are my son and therefore it’s only right that you get to inherit the company. Love ya kid i’ll see you when you get home. I have a meeting.” With that he hung up and Peter was full on crying now. He turned to look at Ned and MJ who were both grinning at him.
“He said I was his son.” He whispered as he looked at Ned. His best friend gave him a look that was calling him an idiot.
“Dude THAT’S what you take away from that whole conversation?!” Peter nodded as he slowly sat down again so that their teacher could continue the lecture. He’d never been happier to not have maths with Flash. He would have made it unbearable. As it stood all of his classmates gave him smiles and congratulations or just straight up ignored him so that was nice. He really didn’t need more negativity or other bullshit. The rest of the day passed in a blur as Peter began to realise that Tony and Pepper had (against his knowledge) been preparing him to take the role of CEO. They had let him sit in and participate in meetings. Had given him supervision over the interns for a few months. They had him working with legal on several cases. Now looking back it made so much sense and he was happy about it. The only thing that could probably genuinely shock him after that was if Tony adopted him.
Tony did end up telling him three weeks later that the adoption papers were in a drawer in his office signed and ready if Peter wanted it. The following Monday all of his teachers did a double take during attendance when they read his legal name. Some (read Flash) still didn’t believe him, conveniently Tony and Peter had scheduled their parents teacher conference right after Flash and they just happened to be early and therefore already waiting outside the door when Flash left paling drastically when he spotted Tony and the realization set in.
