Chapter Text

Chapter One: The Portal

After their final show on their Licensed To Ill tour, Beastie Boys were exhausted. The three could barely stay awake on their journey back to their hotel and tensions between them were at an all time high. When they arrived in their room, none of them spoke for a good few minutes until Mike broke the awkward silence with a simple statement.

”I’m gonna shower”

The others grunted in reply as he headed to the bathroom. Yauch grabbed a beer then slumped on the couch and he drank it like he was dying of thirst, Adam collapsed on the bed and sighed. Mike shut the bathroom door behind him then stood still in utter confusion as he saw a strange glowing circle in the corner of the room. He rubbed his eyes, thinking he may just be tired and seeing things but when he uncovered them, the thing was still there.

”Yo, did I take a pill or some shit?” Mike shouted to the boys in the other room.

Yauch and Adam looked at each other, unable to remember what Mike was doing before or during the show.

”I don’t know,” Yauch answered, “Why?”

Mike opened the door and stepped back into the main room. He looked at the others with a mixture of anxiety and confusion on his face as he pointed to the glowing circle. Adam and Yauch stood up and looked to where he was gesturing to. There it was: a pulsating orb of pure light floating in the corner of their hotel bathroom. It was like something straight out of a sci-fi movie and they knew that if they told anyone, no one would believe them.

”Do you see that or am I tripping?” Mike asked.

Adam looked at Yauch in disbelief then at Mike who still stared at the pair, obviously waiting for confirmation. He stepped into the bathroom and tried to look behind the strange glowing circle. He looked back at his friends through furrowed brows.

”What the fuck is this?” He questioned.

”Why are you asking us?” Yauch retorted.

Adam shrugged and the three boys stood in silence, exchanging equally perplexed glances. None of them had ever seen anything like it and couldn’t tell if it was real or not. Suddenly, Adam felt a harsh slap across his face and he looked to Mike, eyes filled with anger. Mike held up his hands admittedly.

”Sorry.”

”What the fuck, man?” Adam yelled and he leapt at Mike.

”I was just making sure I wasn’t dreaming!” Mike replied as he tried to fight Adam off.

“I’ll prove it isn’t a dream.” Adam said, pinning Mike against the cold bathroom wall.

Yauch debated just letting the two fight it out but he soon stepped in; letting out a sigh as he pulled Adam away and placed a hand on his chest, signalling him to stop. Adam grunted and walked to the other side of the room to slump against the wall. Mike walked back towards the glowing circle and stared at it for a moment.

”Should we touch it?” Mike looked at Yauch.

”Can you both stop asking me what to do?” Yauch said frustratedly “I don’t know what that is, I don’t know if you should touch it- I don’t know if you even can touch it, Mike… It’s just a ball of light…”

Yauch approached the thing cautiously and Mike followed closely behind. Yauch reached out a hand then pulled back quickly. He stared in silence, speculated what they should do.

”I think you should touch it, Mike.” Adam said.

”I’m not touching it, you touch it.” Mike argued.

”I’ll touch it right after you do.”

“No you won’t, you’ll just watch and laugh if it hurts me.”

”No I won’t, trust me.”

The two continued bickering over who should touch the glowing orb in front of them as Yauch left the bathroom and grabbed his can of beer from the other room. When he returned, he threw the can at the orb and it disappeared. Mike and Adam fell silent.

”Yo I think that’s a portal.” Mike said.

”No shit.” Adam responded. “Do we go through?” He asked Yauch.

Yauch raised his hands exasperatedly, as if to say ‘How should I know?’ and the room fell silent once more. Mike reached for Yauch’s hand and stepped closer to it, only inches away.

”What are you doing?” Yauch pulled his hand back.

“I wanna go through the portal.” Mike replied and looked to Adam for support. “Don’t you think it’s kinda cool?”

Adam leant on Mike’s shoulder and squinted at the portal, trying to work out what was on the other side but he couldn’t see anything. He turned back to look at Yauch who then did the same.

”We can go in, but I’m not holding your hand.”

Yauch put his hand on Mike’s shoulder and Adam copied. Mike lead them through the portal, closing his eyes in fear as they were transported to another land.
