Work Header

Half past Twilight

Summary:

She couldn't help the smile that crossed her face, as she unlocked her phone, the background picture one of her and Clive on their wedding day. Her favorite one. One that Mid took unbeknownst to them. She and Clive were standing in a field full of snow daisies, Jill placing her own flower crown on top of Clive's head while both of them were grinning wild and open. A smile that reached their eyes and made everyone seeing the picture sighed in adoration at how in love they are.

Shaking her head, she opened Kupoapp, seeing the chat on the very top with a little star, Clive, of course.

“I would like to pick you up after work today. Do you know when you will finish?”

--

“Jill?”

The voice calling her was soft. She knew she should look up and answer, but she couldn't bring herself to do so.

A few moments later, the voice called out once more, with more urgency this time.

“Jill!”

But Jill stayed how she was. Face buried in her hands, her hair falling over her like a curtain to shield her from the world.

The voice though was persistent, and with her last call, something small hit her head.

“Jill Rosfield!”

Groaning, Jill emerged from her little sanctuary, almost blinded by the warm light of her office lamps, turning around to see the culprit of the disturbance.

“Tarja, you did not really throw some paper clips at me?”

Jill tried, emphasis on trying, to sound annoyed, but her grin was giving away that she wasn't really mad at her favorite college.

“I had to. You weren't listening.”

“I was trying to focus”

“See, that's the problem, you focused on the wrong thing. So? I'm heading down to Molly's for lunch. Do you want anything?”

Tarja was right, she was awful when hungry, better to avoid it by getting her food sooner rather than later.

“No thanks. Clive and I will go have dinner together tonight. I don't want to stuff myself beforehand.”

Tarja wiggled her eyebrows “Uh right. It's your anniversary today isn't it? In this one instance, I shall forgive you to dump lunch with me. But just this once!”

“You are way too kind, Lady Tarja”

The both of them loved to tease each other with silly little nicknames like this.

“Lady my ass. But on a more serious note. Are you going to finally tell him? You can't dodge the topic forever. He's going to hear it either way, and hearing it from yourself will probably be better?”

Jill could nothing but hide her face in her hands again. She tried her best to avoid the topic.

“I will. Probably tomorrow, I want to enjoy tonight without adding another burden to his shoulders. It's such a sensitive topic.”

Unbeknownst to Jill, Tarja frowned her brows, studying Jill for a long moment. Since they heard the news, there was a certain sadness to her. Dimming the light in her eyes and the easy air normally around her. She definitely needed to talk to Clive, better yesterday than today. It won't get any easier to hide it for much longer.

“Right…” Trying to lighten the mood, Tarja moved to the door, “but I'm still bringing you some tea. You didn't really drink enough today, Lady Jill.”

Jill snorted and decided that hiding wouldn’t make things any better. She had to continue on with her work. But before she did, she checked her phone after seeing from the corner of her eyes that a new message came in.

The last thing in this message was a little moon. The pet names they gave each other as children, my Moon for Jill and my Star for Clive, survived all those years and she wouldn't want it any other way. It just felt wrong not to use them when it was just the two of them.

She quickly typed her response before finally going back to work “Around 4:45 probably. I can't wait to see you.”

The case she was currently working on was the biggest and probably most important one the company ever had. It would be a huge trial, the court was currently planning on a eight month time window to hear all the evidence, the witnesses, the victims. A trial against the most influential people of half of Valisthea. The leader of Sanbreque, Dhalmekia and Waloed.

Jill would probably never understand why half of Valisthea was treating “bearers” the way they did. She hated the word. The word that described people like you and me, just with the incredible gift to work small potions of magic. In those three countries, the dirt under one's finger was worth more than the life of a magic user.

What made Jill even angrier than the fact that so many people she knew could easily become slaves to those countries, herself and Clive included, was that the rest of the world didn't act this way. The outer and southern continents for example both had leaders who could use magic. In fact, they were both the leading nations in trying to find a remedy against the curse while in Valisthea more than 80% of all magic users died before the age of 55 due to heavy use of their magic, forced by their “owner”.

That she, Clive and Joshua were in even more danger of the curse due to being dominants, didn't make things better. After the “War of the Eikons” a few hundred years ago, it made matters even worse. Especially with Clive carrying Ifrit, or how historians called him “Eikon of destruction”.

Priming into an Eikon was strictly forbidden, and if one should ever be detected, the authorities needed to be involved immediately. Rosaria was the only country that didn't imprison dominants immediately and put them into crystal fetters to prevent them from priming.

When the three of them sensed that something was wrong with them, and that they could carry a potential Eikon, Clive's father Elwin, president of Rosaria, brought them into the Apodytery beneath Phoenix Gate so they could prime without being seen. After the initial prime, they could control their Eikons and weren't in danger of priming out of control.

That now with Cid and his wife Benedikta, four of the nine dominants were working together in the same company sometimes even five if Clive helped, was a miracle in more ways than one and they could keep their secret to this day.

But now there was the chance to change the world to their own terms. A Valisthea where everyone could live and die on their own terms. But it all came down to this one trial, this one shot at justice. If this trial didn’t end in their favor, Founder knows if the chance would ever come again. Most certainly not in her lifetime. For the first time in history, did four nations; Rosaria, The Northern Territories, Twinside and The free cities of Kanver work together to change the laws regarding “bearer” once and for all.

Jill was part of the department preparing the medical part of data of the evidence. Especially those or magic users who did the wondrous thing most didn't even think possible and escaped their “owner” and survived the journey to one of the other nations, seeking refuge there.

So she spent another afternoon going over file after file after, another interview stating in cruel detail what happened to this magic user with Tarja, making notes, cross checking with other victims statements, trying to figure out if they could find any connection between them and so on and so forth. Even after working for Cid for almost ten years, Jill was sure she would never get used to the horrors of this world.

Another “ping” made her look up and over to her phone. A message from Clive.

“Just arrived. I'm waiting in the car park”

Jill smiled to herself and before she could even say a word, Tarja moved and threw Jill's jacket at her.

“Hitting me twice in just one day? That's a new record even for you Tarja.”

“Yeah, yeah. I will tell Cid myself and you know that he will agree with me to kick you out of this hell before 7pm for once. Now go. Enjoy your date night. I want to hear every “detail”, Tarja did some air quotes with her fingers, on Monday.”

“Not gonna happen and you know that” Jill waved her hand at Tarja while leaving the office after getting her bag and phone.

Tarja grinned before shouting “Spoil spot” after Jill.

The winter in Rosaria never got really cold, so Jill didn't even bother to get into her jacket, she wore, and luckily for everyone involved, also Clive's favorite dress and didn't want the view to be blocked. Even after all of those years, Jill would never get tired of the look of pure awe and love on Clive's face when she wore this particular outfit. It wasn't something special, a black dress with hundreds of white snow daisies printed on it. It fell to her knees and she just wore a simple black tight as well as some deep blue boots with it. Her wedding band and the necklace Clive gifted at her sixteen birthday, a ring similar to the one he wore, the only jewelry she needed.

But as she stepped out into the car park, she suddenly was the one looking dumbstruck and in awe with what she saw.

Clive was leaning against a car, the colorful city light illuminating him. He was wearing some simple blue jeans but founder, the combination with his black shirt, tight on his body, leaving nothing to her imagination with how it clearly showed his abs and the black leather jacket on top and the bracelet his father gave him and Joshua as presents for their respective weddings? How could a simple outfit be so sinful?

Clive spotted her and the small smug smile he gave her, clearly he could see how entranced she was, even in the dim light, made her stomach tighten and heat pooling in her core.

Jill actively needed to tell her legs to keep moving, crossing the small gap left between them, and in a few long strides, she was in front of him, smiling gently but being a tad embarrassed, by how hoarse her voice sounded, when she greeted him. But Clive only chuckled, before leaning down to kiss her.

“Happy Anniversary, you look beautiful in your dress,” he said after they broke the kiss much faster than Jill would have wanted.

“Thank you Clive. You look…” Jill took the opportunity to eye him from head to toe once again.

“You like what you see?” Clive's voice ripped Jill from being distracted once more.

Jill awkwardly cleared her throat, knowing that her cheeks were probably red like the banner of Rosaria and grateful for the darkness for hiding most of it.

“You know I always like what I see, but yes. You look fantastic tonight. Happy anniversary my Star.” Jill couldn't help herself and leaned in for another kiss, this time though, she was deepening it almost immediately, Clive all too happy to oblige.

She was so lost in his taste, the sense of his perfume, the heat that was radiating from him, Founder she would let him take her, right now in the car, if she didn't know that all her colleagues were having a front row seat.

But Clive seemed to be on her page, when he leaned back, he licked his lips as if to taste her again, and then whispered rough in her ear “Hold that thought” before winking at her, and started to walk around the car to open the door for Jill.

Only now did Jill realize that the car Clive was standing against, wasn't their shared one. No, the red sports car that was clearly worth several tens of thousands of Gil had nothing to do with their little blue car they drove for years now after getting a real bargain on it. This car was practically screaming “Byron”.

Clive saw the confusion in Jill's eyes as she sat down in the passenger's seat and just shrugged his shoulders.

“I met Byron the other day and after we talked for a bit about my plans for tonight, he insisted that we take his car for a few days.”

Now Clive's face was turning red, before he added “He even said that I shouldn't worry if the car gets dirty, he already made an appointment to get it cleaned…outside and inside.”

The statement itself was nothing out of the ordinary, but Jill knew there was more to it, otherwise Clive wouldn't be so embarrassed…oh. Ohhh. Byron definitely thought what Jill was thinking not two minutes ago, about dragging Clive into the backseat and having her way with him. Oh that was embarrassing indeed.

“Yeah.” Clive rasped when he sat down behind the wheel, starting the engine “I knew you would immediately get what he was implying.” He again cleared his throat, before smiling at Jill. “Shall we?”

Jill only nodded, trying her hardest to not let her mind wander to the suddenly very appealing backseat again.

They drove in silence for a while, it was an unspoken rule in their relationship, that if one planned a surprise for the other, no questions were asked to not ruin the moment. Although Clive was much better at not asking questions than Jill. So to distract herself, she talked about her work day, about Tarja's teasing and other trivial things, before turning silent again.

Technically, this was the perfect opportunity to talk with Clive, and even if she hated to admit it, Tarja was right. They needed to talk about it sooner or later, and with how long Jill was avoiding the topic, it was rather later now. Why was it so hard to breach the topic? It was Clive, the only person in the world she trusted without any doubt. It was ridiculous how nervous she was.

“Jill?” Clive's deep voice startled her for a second. “What's on your mind? I can basically hear you thinking.”

Other people were happy if their husbands were so attuned to them that they could easily read them like a book, but at this moment, Jill was almost annoyed by his ability to see right through her. But maybe this really was the perfect moment to actually talk to him.

“I need to talk with you about something. But please don't get mad, okay?”

Clive quickly glanced over to her, before focusing back on the street. “You know that I would never, ever, get mad with you. But yes. I promise."

Jill just hummed in conformation before taking a few deep breaths, but then, the words just spilled out of her.

“Cid's curse spread extremely wild in the last few months. Tarja examined him and told him in no unclear circumstances, that just a single tiny spell of magic more and he would probably die. So he wants to retreat from his position and wants you to be his successor.”

There was a moment of silence between them and Jill saw Clive's eyes widen, before he slowly came to a stop on a red traffic light. He turned to her, took her hands in his, and took a deep breath of himself. “I know.”

That was not what Jill was expecting. “You know?! But how?”

Clive closed his eyes in shame. “Now you need to promise me not to get mad.”

Jill's response was immediately. “I promise.”

Clive nodded, his eyes slowly opening. “Cid called me almost two months ago, the day before he told you actually. We agreed to wait for you to be ready to talk about it.”

“Why?” Confusion all in Jill's voice.

“In a way to protect you. After everything that happened in Sanbreque, you were so worried and you made such progress with the therapy, we don't want to ruin it. We wanted to wait for you to be ready.”

Clive started the car again after the light turned green, but kept one hand on Jill's, squeezing tightly.

Her mind was almost immediately flooded with pictures of Clive in the hospital, half his face wrapped in bandages, after a rescue mission for bearers in Sanbreque got completely out of hand and Clive as well as Cid were held hostage for almost two weeks before the Cursebreaker were able to get them out, severely wounded and bound in crystal fetters. The scar on Clive's face a daily reminder of how close of a call this had been. It took them both a long time and various therapy sessions to return to a somewhat normal life.

Just another reminder of how important it was to win the case against the three nations and finally set bearer free. She never wanted to feel so helpless ever again. And no one should ever feel this way just because they were born differently and in the wrong country.

But just thinking about Clive, how he laid in the hospital bed, all those machines beeping and seeing his blood everywhere, how could she ever let him take the mantle of Cid? Why does he want Clive to take over? Yes, he's the most capable lawyer in terms of bearer slavery, and given that he's only one of nine dominants, just like she was one as well, made him even more capable for rescue missions, but still, she just wanted a quiet life with her husband.

No. She couldn’t be this selfish. Not when so many people were suffering a fate much crueler. She came to terms with what Clive had to do, that's why she was talking about it now wasn't she? So she squeezed Clive's hand, and turned to him.

“I see. Thank you for letting me have the time I need. So you will take on his offer then? Byron will surely understand and will let you resign from his company.”

Clive once again took a quick glance at her, swallowing thickly. “Yes and no. Yes I will take on his offer but not in the way you think.”

Jill furrowed her eyebrows.

“While we were waiting for you to be ready, Cid and I came up with a solution that could work better for all of us. We just finished polishing out everything yesterday, so your timing is really good.”

Seeing Jill's confusion, Clive quickly continued.

“We are going to split Cid's position. I'm going to be the representative in the public alongside him, I'm going to be the main lawyer for the case against the three states, and I'm going to train the Cursebreaker. If worse should come to worse and we need more power to ensure a bearer rescue, I will be going. Gav will also be in the team, he still got the best nose in Valisthea and will be our scout, not only in Rosaria, like now, but in the whole continent. And Otto already agreed to take over the organization of the Cursebreaker missions. Everyone is more than eager to step in. Actually, this was something Otto suggested years ago, but Cid wanted to do everything by himself. You know how he is, he would prime into Ramuh everyday if it means he could save a single life and wouldn't be seen as a declaration of war, without ever thinking about his own. I'm glad Mid made him see what he is about to lose, and so he agreed to let us all split the burden.”

Jill could hear his voice shaking and instinctively grabbed his hand tighter.

“I will never leave you again. I will always come back home to you. And if we win this case, we don't have to do any of this ever again. We already talked about what comes after, and we will continue to focus on the then freed bearer and getting justice for them, when they want to sue their former owner. But without any more outside missions for me.”

He stopped the car, seemingly arrived at his destination, and fully turned to Jill, taking her face in his hands.

“I love you Jill, and I will never stop loving you. If you say that you are not comfortable with any of this, I will not take this job. You are the most important thing in my life, and I value your opinion more than my own. You can say no and everyone will understand. Including me and Cid.”

Tears started to pickle in Jill's eyes. She was overthinking everything like she used to do. She should have talked to him sooner, to help him in finding this solution. So many people were patiently waiting for her to come to terms with her fears, how could she let them down?

“I love you too Clive. You know how much I love you and how much I suffered back then, but I also know that you have to do this, and I will ever be at your side. But, if you ever should go on a mission again, I'm going with you, and I will hear no buts about it. I'm also a dominant and I'm not going to sit home when you are in danger. You know how the saying goes. Fire or ice alone are strong, but fire and ice working together, is the very force of nature that will give life to the world, we need each other just as our elements and our Eikons need each other.”

Jill could see that Clive wanted to protest, to argue that he would not let the curse spread in her, but she saw the moment he realized that he would be a hypocrite if he said so. Clive Rosfield was the very definition of someone who was born to protect and save others and it took her many many years to make him see that he was worth saving and being protected as well, and that she would be the person to do so. And that he didn't argue with her, was testament of those years she spent to build up the confidence his mother so easily destroyed in his childhood.

He nodded and admitted in defeat. “Alright.” He kissed her on the forehead real quick “We can talk with Cid after the weekend and let him know our decision. Thank you Jill.”

Clive's thumb caught a tear that was running down her cheek, and she leaned over the center console to hug him to her. Her face buried into his neck.

“Thank you for giving me the time I needed. Both of you.”

“Hmm.” Clive didn't know what to say, so he just held Jill for as long as she wanted, just gently brushing his hands down her hair.

They stayed like this for a little while, until Jill pulled back up of the embrace, looking out of the window, recognizing where Clive drove them, and a small smile played on her lips.

“Man's Hill?”

“Yeah,” Clive smiled. “We haven't been here for a few years and I thought it's the perfect day to come back. According to Joshua, there will be a rain of shooting stars tonight, and with how far away we are from the lights of the city, I thought we should do some stargazing? Uncle Byron also insisted that we would stay at his apartment nearby for the weekend. So we don't have to drive home all the way in the night and can just stay up for as long as we want. If that's something you would like to do?”

Jill's smile only brightened until her stomach audibly growled, making her laugh in little embarrassment.

Clive joined her in her laughter, knowing that if Jill loved one thing as equally as him, it was food. He opened the door, before heading to the trunk to open it, Jill now at his side and her eyes began to sparkle in the low light the trunk provided.

“Clive, there is literally a feast in here? Where did you get this?”

“Rutherford heard about my plan when I talked to Byron and prepared everything in here for us. We got plenty of food for the weekend, and there” he pointed to two containers, “we got some warm food and some colder dessert for later.”

Clive would never get enough of the look on Jill's face when it came to food she loved. He could basically see how she already planned in which order she would eat what. So it only mildly surprised him, when she grabbed the big blanket and the container with the warm food, before looking playfully over her shoulder at him, asking “Are you coming, or can I enjoy this all on my own?”

So Clive quickly grabbed the drinks and the desserts before following her like a puppy might.

They settled themselves in between the flowers that despite the winter season were still in full bloom, trying the various goods that Rutherford made for them, a mix of their favorites as well as some classics that they knew was his specialty. In between bits and bites, they evaluated the food and playfully ranked them like the chefs did in their favorite show, but to no surprise, everything they ate was rewarded with the highest of numbers.

For the dessert, Clive quickly opened a small bottle of non-alcoholic champagne, they still needed to drive to the apartment after all, pouring them each a glass and sitting down behind Jill, so that she could comfortably lean against him, her back to his chest while she sat in between his spread legs. They clanged their glasses together in a toast and just enjoyed the view upon Rosalith from the top of the hill.

The city and its lights looked like little stars from their view and they simply enjoyed being alone.

After some time, Jill turned around, finishing the last bit of the, how she called it, heavily lemon tart Rutherford made, and tilted her head at Clive.

“What's on your mind Jill?” Clive instinctively tilted his head as well.

“Do you think the oak is still here?”

That was not what Clive expected but now he couldn't help but wonder. “I hope so. Should we take a look? We could use our phone's flashlight for the walk, it shouldn't be too far.”

Jill grinned at him, quickly standing up and reaching her hand down to him, so she could pull him up to her. They quickly stored everything back into the car, taking only their phones and Jill's little bag with them before walking towards the little forest next to the field they just sat on.

Not too long after, Jill took a few quick steps as she spotted what she was searching, while standing in front of the oak, they didn't even need their phones. The tree was standing in a clearing and the moon was so full tonight, that it shone bright upon it.

“Let's see…” Jill said while rounding the old oak. “Aha! "It's still here!”

Clive closed the gap to her and smiled when he saw where Jill was looking at.

On the side, a little bit under her head was something carved into the tree bark. A tiny heart, with four letters in it. “C.R.J.W.” their initials.

“I'm surprised it's still here and even readable,” Clive said while running his finger over the letters.

“Me too. It's been eighteen years. But I just realized something.” Jill now let her finger glide over the bark as well, touching Clive's.

“And what would that be?” He asked playfully.

“It's not quite right anymore. It should say J.R. not J.W.”

Jill loved her maiden name, she really did. She would forever be a Warrick at heart, but she was equally happy to be a Rosfield by now. Although it sometimes still felt a bit weird to answer the phone with “Jill Rosfield” or being introduced to someone new this way, but having the same name like Clive? It just felt right. He even offered to take on Warrick after they got engaged, but Jill knew how much he loved his family and she didn't want to break their bond, even if no one ever thought about it like she did.

Clive looked absolutely surprised, when Jill pulled out one of the knives they used for their dinner out of her bag, and started scratching into the bark. Not two minutes later, she brushed her hand over the tree, looking satisfied with her work. She extended the heart and it now said C.R J.W 860 and C.R J.R 873 with two little rings right next to it.

Clive looked at the carving before taking Jill by the hips to turn her to him, his forehead touching hers, while he looked at her silver eyes that shone so bright in the moonlight, only seeing the love she had for him in them as he was sure, that she would find nothing else but the same in his.

“I love you,” his voice was barely above a whisper. But Jill's wasn't any better when she answered in kind “I know.

"I love you too.”

Clive closed the little gap between them and kissed her slowly and softly, as if he poured his very heart into the kiss.

Did they stay like this for only a minute or an hour? Clive wasn't sure anymore and it hardly mattered to him. The only thing that mattered was the woman in his arms. His wife. He quite couldn't believe it sometimes. And he started to look around them when they finally broke the kiss.

“What are you thinking about?” Her hand squeezed his lightly.

“Just about how everything started. I think we sat exactly here?”

Jill also looked around, before nodding. “I think you are right, I remember looking at that other tree after opening my eyes again.”

“I sometimes can't believe it's already been eighteen years. It feels like yesterday when we ran all the way here to seek shelter from the rain,” Clive said, as he took off his leather jacket to put it on the ground for them to sit on. But not without noticing Jill's heated stare when he stood in front of her, in just the shirt he was wearing under. He knew it accented his arms and muscles and he knew how turned on Jill was anytime he wore this particular shirt. He tried his best to ignore the peng of lust rushing through him at Jill's looks and instead sat down and patted the jacket so Jill sat down next to him.

“We were soaked to the bones when we finally got here,” Jill laughed and the sound was like the sweetest song to Clive's ears.

“And I was so worried that you would get sick because of me and my silly idea.”

“I mean, it was your idea as much as was mine and the cold I got the next day was absolutely worth it.”

Clive laughed “I still remember how eager the two of us were when we learned, that a part of “The saint and the sectary” was filmed here. How we looked for every little scene we recognized and how we reciting the lines together.”

Jill laid her head on Clive's shoulder, eyes closed. “And when we finally got here, to this oak, and finished our last scene, I was so SO nervous.”

“Me too. I knew that Sir Crandall and Saint Sibylle kissed here, after their goodbyes, and I really really wanted to kiss you too, but I was so afraid that I misunderstood how I thought you felt for me.”

Jill looked up at him, puzzled for a moment “You never, ever need to worry about my feelings for you Clive. I always loved you and I will always love you.”

“I know. That's why I took this leap of faith, I think that was the bravest moment of my life and to feel you kissing me back? It was the happiest moment of my life as well. You made quite the habit out of it over the years, my lady. You just make me happy every single day of my life.”

Jill didn't answer him with words but with a kiss that turned from sweet and innocent to desperate and yearning in the matter of seconds. Her hands roamed over his body, gripping and pulling him closer to her, until she felt how he started to turn his body and laid her completely down on his jacket and hover over her.

Jill didn't even know what was happening anymore, so lost into the kiss and Clive's weight over her, that she barely noticed the hand that was pulling down her tights and pushing up her dress. Only after Clive brought her over the edge, and she recognized the cry of his name as her own voice a few minutes later, her mind began to catch up with the world around her.

She opened her eyes and the smug smile on Clive's face, made her stomach tighten once again. His voice was rough when he pulled his fingers free from her as he said “That was the much better dessert. I feel sorry for Rutherford's tarts, but they are no match for you.”

Jill still tried to catch her breath but tried to sound as alluring as she could. “I think it's only fair for me to get a shot at this special dessert as well. If you would let me?” She could feel the bulge pressed against her and was sure that Clive wouldn't decline her offer, but to her surprise, he shook his head and stood back up after helping Jill to dress up again.

“There's a star shower waiting for us and knowing us, we would never make it back to the car in time.”

He actually got a point. They tend to spend hours in bed or other surfaces once they get to it. In this regard, they were still like their teenage selves and couldn't never get enough of each other.

So she quickly tried to fix her hair with her hands and after taking a quick photo of the carving, she and Clive started their little track back to the car. After sensing that Jill was freezing a bit after her sudden high, Clive offered her his leather jacket to keep her warm. Seeing her in his clothes though, made him second guess his decision from a few minutes ago. But no. He had to focus. They had all of the weekend to themselves and he could wait a bit longer.

As they got back to the car, the first shooting star just flew over them. So Clive and Jill quickly took off their shoes and climbed on top of the engine hood, their backs leaning against the windshield, as more and more stars flew by.

Unbeknownst to the other, both Clive and Jill wished for the same thing; That the other stayed safe and that they could grow old and wrinkly together. Jill knew that Metia, the bright red star next to the moon, always saw her wishes come true so far, so she made a second wish to her as well. That Clive would be happy with his new job and that he could continue to help the people who cannot fight for themselves. He always adored the shields and knights in old movies and books and wanted to be like them. Protect the people around him and especially those who can't defend themselves. It was just natural for him to see injustice and do something about it. It was one of the reasons he was such an amazing lawyer and she couldn't be more proud of him.

They just watched the stars in comfortable silence, Jill leaning at his side, with his arm draped over her. It was magical and Clive couldn't be more happy to share yet another memory with Jill. She once said that her memories with him are her greatest treasure and he couldn't agree more.

She was everything he ever needed, and so, he found himself drawn to her once more. His finger slightly tipped her chin up so that their lips could meet again just as another rush of stars flew over them. But neither of them cared anymore. The only thing that mattered was the other and how their lips and tongues danced with each other, leaving goosebumps all over their bodies, and the quiet moans and pants the only sound around them. It was as if time stood still and that they were the only people in Valisthea, the stars, the moon, everything was here just for them and no one else.

And Clive found that he was a terrible liar, and that he clearly couldn't wait any longer.

He pulled back, his eyes hooded as he looked at Jill, still entranced by how good she looked in his jacket, and he rasped “You look so good with my jacket on you and how my scent is starting to linger on you. But you know how you look even more stunning?”

Jill's heart was racing, her blood singing in her veins, she simply shook her head and when Clive leaned in and whispered into her ear “Naked, and under or over me” she shivered and instinct took over her. She almost jumped down the hood with Clive following her on her heels, opened the door to the passenger's seat and reclined all the way back and started to undress herself, Clive quickly caught up to her intentions and started to shove down his trouser and underwear. Just as he grabbed the hem of his shirt to pull it over his head, Jill stilled his hands “leave the shirt on” before she pushed him into the seat and closed the door before she climbed onto his lap to align their bodies.

The shooting stars long faded into the darkness when Clive and Jill finally came back to themselves, utterly spent and soft kisses the only thing they were able to. Legs shaking, bodies sweat after making out several times, and Clive could only laugh weaky when he kissed Jill again and whispered “We definitely need to clean the car ourselves.”

Notes:

Endless thanks to NightysWolf for putting this idea into my head with her amazing "modern Clive leaning against a car" render. I can't stop looking at it and my mind went crazy on this. And a bigger thanks for letting me write this and throwing plot bunnies at you left and right. Bring magic, bearer and eikons into a modern day setting is incredible hard but it was really fun!

I admit, the wedding pictures taking unbeknownst to Clive and Jill turning out to be their favorite is 100% me with the pictures of my wedding. My husband and I love the picture our photographer took, but the ones when we didn't know were taken? Those are easily our favorites.

This was my first real attempt at a modern day Valisthea and I tried to keep as much as I could from the game and I actually liked how everything turned out to be.
I still feel more comfortable in the in-game setting but it was a nice challenge. So I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

As always, thank you all so much for reading and a very very very happy birthday to the lovely BaneoftheWitchKing ❤️
