Work Text:
Phoenix walked into the living room of his and Maya’s shared residence and discovered Maya giggling at something in a book she was reading.
“What are you reading?” Phoenix asked curiously.
“Nick!” Maya jerked her head up from the book and was slightly startled, “I didn't hear you come in!”
“Oh, sorry for startling you.” Phoenix put his hand on the back of his head and smiled, “What are you reading?” He repeated, “You seemed really interested in it.”
“This? It's um, nothing.” Maya said quickly as she closed the book and held it to her chest to prevent Phoenix from seeing the title, naturally that just made him more curious about it.
“Sure didn't look like nothing.” Phoenix said, “Why can't you show me?”
“Because… It's not important! You don't need to know!” Maya said defensively.
“You’d hide things from your partner like that?” Phoenix asked while feigning hurt in his voice.
“N-No! It's just-” Maya loosened up a bit and when she did Phoenix swiped the book from her and looked at the cover.
“Hey no fair!” Maya claimed and frowned. Phoenix’s eyes widened as he looked at the cover of it.
“T-These are photos of me growing up. I thought the book looked familiar.” He opened it up.
“O-Oh is that what that is? I didn't realize-”
“It's okay Maya, I'm not mad at you. I didn't even know I still had this.”
“I was looking through some of your old things and found this.” Maya said, “You were cute as a baby. You even had baby spiky hair way back then!” Maya giggled while looking at Phoenix’s baby photos with him.
“Huh, I guess my hair was always spiky.”
“Y'know Nick despite all the time we've known each other, you've never really talked much about your child. All I really know is that you, Larry, and Edgeworth were in the same elementary school together, and that class trial.”
“Well it wasn't really super interesting, there's not exactly a lot to tell.”
“C'mon Nick it couldn't have been as boring as my childhood!” Maya nudged him, “Maybe there's something in this book.” Maya took the picture book back and started flipping through it.
“Hey! You just want some dirt to tease me with, don't you?” Phoenix said.
“You know me too well.” Maya confirmed as she continued flipping through it.
Maya gasped as she came across a picture of a young Phoenix wearing a boy scout outfit, “Nick! You didn't tell me you were a boy scout!” She exclaimed while smirking.
“I-It was only for a few months, I wasn't very good at being one.”
“Well that's good to know~” Maya giggled as she kept flipping through the pages.
“Awww this is so adorable.” Maya pointed at a photo of baby Phoenix in a crib with a pacifier in his mouth fast asleep.
“Y-Yeah, I guess.” Phoenix replied while blushing slightly.
“I just wanna pick you up and pinch those adorable little cheeks!”
“I mean, you can still pinch my cheeks now.”
“Yeah but you're not a baby anymore.”
“Oh.”
“Don't worry, you're still adorable Nick.”
Phoenix blushed as Maya smirked and kept flipping through the book.
“What’s this?” Maya pointed at a photo of Phoenix in the driver's seat of a car that crashed into a stop sign.
“Oh… That's from when I took my first driver's test in high school. As you can see it didn't go very well…”
“Yikes. Is that why you still don't have a driver's license?”
“Yeah… pretty much. I've been too nervous that I might crash the car again. And I really can't afford that happening.”
“C'mon Nick it's been like forever since you were in high school! I'm sure you could ace that driver's test if you tried again!” Maya said encouragingly.
“Maybe… I really should get a driver's license soon. I am 36 now.”
“Yeah! Imagine how much easier things could be if we could drive everywhere instead of walk! And I've always wanted to try making out in a car like in those sappy romance movies~” Maya winked at Phoenix.
“Wh- I-” Phoenix stuttered for a moment before sighing in resignation, “If I ever do get a car we can try that sometime.”
“I can't wait!” Maya smiles and kept flipping through the book.
“Wait… is that… sis?” Maya looked at a photo of Phoenix from not super long ago shaking hands with Mia.
“Oh, that's from when I first started working with the chief as her apprentice. Back when the office was still called Fey and Co.”
“I still can't believe that it's been over ten years since we met.” Maya reminisced.
“Yeah, it's pretty crazy how fast time flies huh?”
“Yeah. To think I was only seventeen when we met… And now I'm twenty-nine! Can you believe that Nick?!”
“It is really crazy thinking about it.” Phoenix put an arm around Maya. “And I think we'll still be together for the rest of our lives.”
“Yeah! You're right we will be together forever!” Maya replied.
“Huh, looks like that was the last picture. The rest of this book is empty.” Maya said as she flipped through blank pages.
“That must've been when I forgot about this book. I did have a new job keeping me busy after all.”
“Well why don't we continue it?” Maya closed the book and looked at the front cover. “Wright memories” was written in marker on the front of it. Maya grabbed a marker off a nearby table and wrote something on the cover.
“Hey what are you doing?!” Phoenix asked.
“Relax, just making a revision….” Maya said before showing the cover to him. It now read “Fey-Wright memories”.
“I have no objections to continuing the book.” Phoenix said.
“Good! We'll need something to show our grandchildren once we're really old so they know what our lives were like!” Maya giggled as she took out her phone. “Now smile Nick!”
Phoenix smiled and Maya kissed him on the cheek as they took the picture of them together. Maya then printed it out quickly and glued it into the book.
“Perfect.” Phoenix commented.
“Now that it's our book, I'm gonna put a bunch of pictures of me growing up in here too! And a punch of pictures of you and me, and Trucy, and Pearly too!”
“I guess it only makes sense to add them too, they are family.”
“Exactly! This picture book is about to get a whole lot longer!”
Maya ran over to the printer and started printing a bunch of pictures. Phoenix just laughed to himself and shook his head as he watched his wife gleefully print out pictures to put in the book.
End.
