They both fit in Shellington's foldaway bed when they snuggled close. But whether or not he set an alarm, Barnacles almost always woke early. Rather too early. Most of those mornings, Shellington would get woken in turn by the bounce of the bed as Barnacles got up (bounced up, really) although Shellington wasn't eager to be properly awake yet.
Leaning down, Barnacles nuzzled the top of Shellington's head before he retrieved Shellington's striped nightcap. "You can keep sleeping," he whispered.
"While you're jumping around," Shellington answered, yawning. "Don't kick my experiments."
Barnacles defended his exercises. "I don't kick. I stretch out my legs."
Shellington had, it seemed, already fallen back asleep. Whether or not he was observed, Barnacles took care with how far he stretched.
