Good Night and Joy Be With You All

Summary:

A look into Phoebe’s year off, as well as the boys’ little holiday get together

(Title from “The Parting Glass”)

Notes:

Merry early Christmas everyone. Here’s a little one shot with the boys, especially Phoebe because I barely write about her and I wanted to change that. Enjoy, and remember not to share this outside of this site

Work Text:

Phoebe would anything for her boys. Even in her year of hiding, she would sacrifice anything just to be by their side.

She had done a good job not being around a lot in the media so far. She had time to herself, she and Bo went out a lot, she and the boys helped a friend out on their new album, and had a few performances with friends (keyword: few).

Still, even in her time off, she still made time for her boys, who were so important to her that they moved to California to be with her (as well as to be with each other after figuring out their feelings for so long). They finally watched Paddington 2 together after daring themselves to. She helped Julien plant out Lucy’s birthday, while the two in return planted out her own birthday. They went to theme parks together, in which Phoebe happily allowed Lucy to take a photo of her riding in a rocket ride on film. She even traveled to All Things Go to see Julien perform and sing happy birthday to her afterwards, and it meant a lot seeing her friend so happy, even for someone who doesn’t like celebrating it.

Phoebe also changed her hair design in her year off too. She dyed it blue, which was one of her dream colors to try. She really enjoyed it, and it made her feel like herself for the first time in a while. Don’t get her wrong, she loves her blonde hair, but trying out new things also made her feel better about herself if she wanted to improve more. Afterwards, the blue roots became mixed in with purple, which Lucy enjoyed because she looked like a cartoon character, and it made Phoebe laugh.

Nowadays, the blue is completely gone, and her natural dark hair has returned, with the exception of the brief appearance of the purple roots in the middle. It felt alien being in her natural color. She didn’t hate it personally, it was still a part of her, but it really didn’t feel like it needed to be shown right now in a time where she felt comfortable with herself.

The first time Lucy noticed it, she asked her to sit down so that she could comb it. “It won’t hurt.” She said. She did listen to her, and she gave her a little touch up in there. She made her a ponytail, and she felt…seen. It really made her day that she did that for her, no questions asked. She cried the whole way home, thinking how it really meant for her to do such a selfish thing.

After that, she did keep the hair like that. She loved it like this. She will miss the roots when they’re gone, but she knows she feels 100% confident in herself now.

Another day, she and Julien were walking their respective dogs in the dog park the latter goes to. She had just done a mini tour and was getting used to settling back in with her reality. Phoebe was just happy to be in her company, although she could see a bit of tension was still in there in her.

“I just missed being home. I missed Lucy, and I missed Beans too. It’s just not the same without them.” The brunette would say.

She understood it so well. She missed being around the people she loved the most when she goes away to perform. Hell, she spent the whole last year with two of her favorite people. Having seen Julien and Lucy’s relationship change into more in the last year, she knew it was going to be difficult for one of them to leave the other behind and how they would cope with it. Still, she survived and she was here with her, so she knew it wouldn’t be that bad. She just hopes Lucy doesn’t feel that way when her time to go back on the road comes.

“You did great, JB. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.” Phoebe said.

She could tell Julien was about to start to cry, but instead, she hugged her. It really meant a lot to her small friend. This was a person who didn’t express her feelings a lot, but when she did, she showed it big time. Phoebe couldn’t help but feel proud of herself. She really made her feel good about herself.

Now, Phoebe and her boys were doing their little holiday party at Julien and Lucy’s house. The cookies were made and eaten, the karaoke songs were sung, kisses under the mistletoe were done, and ugly sweaters were criticized.

She could see Beans and Maxine playing around in the hallway, fighting over the former’s toys.

She could see Julien, her face all over with Lucy’s lipstick marks, dumbstruck over her girlfriend’s lovable actions after they kissed under the mistletoe.

She could see Lucy, smiling to herself on the tea she was drinking, pretending like she didn’t just kissed her entire face minutes earlier.

Phoebe enjoyed herself a lot today. They were talking a lot about their recent whereabouts. She and Lucy talked about going to Billie Eilish’s concert at the Forum with Fightmaster, while Julien spent her time raving about the Lana drop and how No More Hiding impacted her deeply. It felt like a normal conversation, one of those conversations she misses dearly when they were on the road.

After a while, she laid on her friends’ bed, just exhausted from the activities with just a buttercream cookie in her hands. She ate it and felt the warmth of it take her over. Unknowingly, she slept in for quite some time, because when she woke up hours later, she could see Lucy and Julien, lying low next to her side, both of them with arms around the other.

“There’s room for you too you know.” Lucy whispered.

She laughed, as if they haven’t done this before, and of course, like a patient woman, she goes to Lucy’s left side and grabs her side as well, feeling the connection she and her boys had.

She would anything for them.

They would do anything for her too.

And they would continue doing so, and she would do it for them in return as well.

“I love you guys so much.” She said to them.

The couple looked at each other and smiled. To her surprise, they both kiss Phoebe’s cheeks.

“We love you too, Pheebs.”

Phoebe knows her boys would always be there for her, and her boys know that they would always be there for Phoebe as well. Just as simple as that.
