Work Text:

A fucking car.

The desperation that consumed Prudence was so deep it seemed to pierce her soul. She couldn’t speak, couldn’t breathe, the weight of anguish suffocated her. The vet still hadn’t come out of the emergency room, and the world itself seemed to have stopped in that endless moment.

Her hands trembled, and despite her efforts, she couldn’t stop the tears. She couldn’t stop biting her hair, couldn’t stop crying. The sadness and helplessness consumed her. She felt her eyes growing weary, her throat tightening, her body about to collapse. She couldn’t control herself, couldn’t stop. The pain was unbearable.

She had gotten there as quickly as she could, even before her mother. Her heart raced wildly, but when she saw Trishna there, a small spark of comfort stirred within her. However, even Trishna’s gentle words couldn’t break through the wall of anguish surrounding her. All she could hear were the echoes of her own despair.

The pain of seeing her mother, cold and incapable of understanding the emotional abyss she was drowning in, was shattering. And then, Trishna, with her delicate compassion, touched her back, embraced her, whispering in her ear that she wasn’t alone. But Prudence couldn’t understand. Her world was falling apart, and the sound of her ragged breathing was her only companion.

Yuko arrived, and the question she asked was the spark that lit the fuse.

“Where is the dog?”

That simple question set off a storm. Prudence couldn’t contain herself anymore. A guttural, visceral sound escaped from her chest. She screamed. She screamed with all the strength she had left, as if the pain she had carried for years was finally breaking free in that one moment. She screamed at her mother, corrected her name, told her what she had never dared say before:

“You never cared about Pickles! You never understood me! You never listened!”

It was as if all the times she had tried to speak, all the times she had asked for help, had been ignored. Everything she was feeling, all the emotions she had suppressed for so long, exploded in one single scream. The loneliness in her heart became palpable.

Trishna, seeing Prudence’s emotional flood, surrounded her with her arms. She held her tight, preventing her from hitting her head on the ground, as if she wanted to protect her from everything, even herself. Trishna’s voice, soft but firm, couldn’t completely calm her, but her presence was all Prudence needed.

The pain was unbearable, but in Trishna’s arms, there was something comforting. Prudence wasn’t thinking clearly; she was just acting, her body guided by anguish, but she could feel Trishna’s warmth, like a beacon in the middle of the storm. She managed to grab her hair, hitting herself a little more, but in her mind, in her soul, something told her she wasn’t alone.

When the vet finally came out, Prudence thought it was the end. She prepared herself for the worst, her mind already beginning to unravel. The truth, however, came as a breath of fresh air, though not completely.

Pickles was alive. He had a broken leg. With time, he would heal.

Prudence’s tears didn’t stop, but they were different now. This time, they weren’t of despair. They were tears of relief, of gratitude, of a love so deep that it couldn’t be expressed in words. Without thinking, she threw herself into Pickles’ embrace, her soul, her everything.

Trishna, with a smile full of tenderness, gave her space. Even though the situation had been devastating, she felt that, at last, Prudence was beginning to breathe, beginning to find some peace. But Yuko, standing off to the side, couldn’t help but feel powerless. It had been years since she last saw Prudence melt down like that, and she still didn’t know how to help her in those moments.

Prudence, holding Pickles, could only whisper through sobs, “I’m sorry, Trishna. I didn’t mean to push you- it’s just that, it’s all too much for me.”

Trishna looked at her with infinite tenderness. Her eyes, full of understanding, offered no judgment, only love.

“You don’t have to apologize. I would never judge you. I’m here for you. Always.”

She wasn’t going to leave her. Never. Trishna would take care of her, love her, until she could smile again. Even though the darkness of her anguish still lingered, something in the air had changed. The strength of their bond, the unbreakable love between them, was now firmer than ever.

The day they spent together, caring for Pickles, became a promise. A promise that, no matter what, Trishna would fight to make her smile, to help her rise again, to give her the strength she so desperately needed.

Because, despite everything, Trishna would never abandon her.

Never.

When I'm eating and I remember how good PRISHNA has been with me.
