Candle Light

Summary:

Phar gets rudely awakened from Biala's candle light, only for the moki's taunting words to wake him up even harder.

An old drabble based off Twurtle's "Ori, but a little to the left" series. Might be OOC.

Notes:

Short drabble set for a pairing in Twurtle’s fanfic, Exploration and Navigation.
I’d actually written this short drabble over two and a half years ago, but decided to touch it up and publish it on AO3 for the author's birthday. This ficlet was written so long ago that honestly both of them are probably out of character haha.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Gah! What the—”

The dimly lit glow of a candle cast a reddish tint around the darkened room. A groggy Phar tossed about, the spirit forced awake as the sudden illumination from the light source.

“You conniving witch,” he grunted, rolling the other way with a grumble, his free arm pulling his pillow over his head. “What unholy hour is this? Let me sleep, Biala.”

The pillow was yanked away from Phar's loosened grip, causing the spirit to flinch back at the harsh light that now directly assaulted his eyes. Stubborn moki eyes met Phar’s bloodshot eyes as the spirit finally met her gaze. “Okay, okay! Screw this noise, I'm up, I'm up !”

Still clad in her nightgown, Biala placed the candle aside with a chuckle. “Why the long face? You were the one who said you wanted to wake up early so you could show Ori up, remember?”

Shakily getting to his hooves, an irritated Phar couldn't help but snark. “Okay, so I might have said that, but even so, did you have to put that thing right in my face?” He placed his paws to his face, brows furrowed as he massaged his temples. “Do you relish in my pain or something?”

Biala whistled. “You spirits radiate light yourself, surely a little candlelight can't hurt you that badly,” she pointed out, deftly deflecting Phar's accusation. Tugging on the hem of her nightgown, the Merilian Moki leaned into Phar's personal space. “Unless… you can't actually handle it?” she suggested, a cheeky smirk gracing her face.

Outraged eyes met mischievous ones. “Wh-why… you… that didn't do anything! I'm totally awake! That measly candlelight doesn't affect me… at all…” Phar trailed off to a laughing Biala, the spirit only now realizing that he'd been played for a fool — led on and roused from his grogginess just so he could get the last word… she’d gotten him, hook, line, and sinker.

“…damn you, girl. Damn it all.”

Biala ambled her way out of the room, still snickering. “You'll thank me later. I'll leave that candle in your room so you don't fall back to sleep.”

“I'm already on my hooves, you! I'm not going back to sleep! You wanted me awake, didn’t you?”

Turning around to face the grouchy spirit, Biala made a final remark. “You do realize that you are admitting the light from the candle does affect you with that retort, right? Oh, silly Phar…”

Phar watched her go, mouth agape at the moki’s clapback. The Nilesian Spirit stood frozen for an indeterminate amount of time before grabbing his discarded pillow and screaming into it in abject frustration.
